Georgia Tech could add 1 more to Top 15 recruiting class (UPDATED)

Are you surprised with Brian Gregory's success with recruiting in his first year?

New Georgia Tech basketball coach Brian Gregory has gotten off to a sizzling start with recruiting, landing the Yellow Jackets a top 15 class which is headlined by 5-star forward Robert Carter of Shiloh High School.

And Georgia Tech could add one more recruit, including a much-needed point guard, later this season in April’s late signing period. The early signing period ended on Wednesday.

Gregory had four scholarships to give this year. He’s used three, and still waiting to see what to do about the other one.

“We’re going to recruit a handful of guys and evaluate them to see if they are good enough and if they fill the needs we have for our program,” Gregory said. “If they are a good fit for us, and we are a good fit for them, we may sign some guys late.”

Gregory is looking at the big picture before deciding how to spend the scholarships. He had five this season, and two more next season.

“The thing we did, we look at it as a two-year recruiting process to bring in seven players over two recruiting classes,” he said. “That may break down to three this year and four next, or another combination. After our second  season here, we’ll be sitting with seven players that we brought in with us to Georgia Tech, along with the returning players we have.”

Carter is the superstar of this year’s class, which also includes North Gwinnett combo guard Chris Bolden and North Clayton swingman Marcus Hunt.

Meanwhile, archrival UGA could also sign one more player this spring or save it for next season. UGA landed three homegrown talents in the early period — Miller Grove forward Brandon Morris, Whitfield Academy guard Kenneth Gaines and Milton point Charles Mann.

Updated: Georgia Tech has one scholarship left to give, rather than the two originally reported. However, that could change, like with any college, if any players decided to transfer, graduate early, or leave early to play professionally.

The Atlanta area has a huge pool of talented b-ball players. The recruiting advantage of playing for an ACC team in your backyard is tremendous. The recruits will likely be there for any decent coach at GT. The real question is what does he do with them. Can they play team basketball and do great things or run the clogged toilet offense of the past coach? The jury will be out on that for a few years, but from the early signs with Mr. Gregory I think things are positive. Go Jackets.

I’m impressed so far with CBG. Watched a little bit of each game and we looked like a different team from past years.

Looks like George Mason got exactly what they should have expected with Tall Paul. OT loss with 21 turnovers last game.

It would definitely ignite the program to have a coach that can recruit AND develop players. Let’s see how the season goes. We might be returning to relevance sooner than expected!

All the speculation is on Mr Parker going to Duke or Ohio State, but Tech may be in the mix! They are recruiting him well and he may have a desire to stay home and join Mr Carter and dominate next year in the new arena! Don’t forget he knows all the players and Mr Carter can play outside and free the low post for him!

I have to admit that as a Tech alumnus I love GT football first, baseball second, and basketball is something I’ll pay attention to if there’s reason to. That said, given the events of the last year and all the change that is occurring in that program I’m definitely paying attention now! It’s looking like this all has some decent potential!

sound familiar?

paul hewitt led george mason to a 1 point LOSS in overtime last night. george mason has 21 turnovers.

thank god we got rid of that dirt bag no matter the cost. he sucked gt dry 6 years too long.

funny though when he got the job a gm he commented that after reflecting on his job performance at gt that he was going to have to change some things. yes he changed some things all right… the name on his paycheck.

where is hewitt fan at that slime ball. could hewitt fan have been paul hewitt in disquise? a distinct possibility,.

Tonights game is on ESPN3 also. But it says “subject to blackout”. No idea what that means for us folks in Georgia. And there is no cable of any brand in this county.

Michael, do we really have any chance with Parker. Duke is going after him big time. Does Carter have an inside on him. How are his grades?
If we could pull the miracle and get Parker, look out everyone, we’ll be hard to beat.
If there are good point guard prospects in next year’s class, this is lining up well, Udofia can handle point for us now and next year. He was a highly recruited point guard coming out of HS. He just didn’t come on with Hewitt’s system.

IT’S A GOOD START BUT HE WILL NEVER WIN ON A REGULAR BASIS AT TECH LET’S FACE IT AS LONG AS COACH K AND DUKE ARE AROUND, NO MATTER HOW MUCH TALENT THEY GOT, THEY WILL GET ALL THE CALLS AND ON THIS DUKE TEAM THIS YEAR THEY DON’T HAVE ANY SIZE 6-8 OR TALLER THAT’S WORTH A PENNY DON’T TELL ME THE PARMALEE TWINS BECUASE THEY CAN’T PLAY AND YOU GOT UNC, PLUS ON THE ROAD YOU DON’T GET A SINGLE CALL AND ALSO TELL ME A TECH COACH THAT WON HERE ON A REGULAR BASIS NOT CREMINS, NOT HEWIITT AND IT AIN’T HAPPENING WITH GREGORY NOT IN THE ACC BECAUSE THEY PLAY FOOTBALL ON THE BASKETBALL COURT.

Also, GM shot 65% from the FT line. Same old, same old.

We are going to be pleasantly surprised with the Jackets this year.
And wonder what Shumpert is thinking now. He could be a big star still playing but he’s sitting around wondering if he will ever get a paycheck. Maybe he’s on campus finishing up his degree. Hope so, but doubt it.

And John w, Royal played 21 minutes, had 10 pts and 6 rebounds in Game 1, but only played 11 min with 1 & 1 in game 2. It’s only been 2 games. Kids going to be a nice player.

The game is BlackedOut because GT sucks!!!!!!!

Conferences don’t win NC’s, teams to do. I have yet to see a team win a NC and say they won it because of their conference. Did Duke, Maryland, NC State, or North Carolina mentioned GT’s name when they won their NC………….No

I don’t think this coach will sign one and done’s. If he starts that trend again he needs to be fired ASAP! It has been proven all to often that there are very few championship teams that aspire to the one and done and prosper.

We have a ton of talent already on the team. Jason Morris, Daniel Miller, Mfon Udofia, Kammeon Holsey, Julian Royal… all ESPN100 players and Brandon Reed was a late bloomer who will really help. CBG has a good chance at doing well and restoring Thrillerdome 2.0 to former greatness next year…

I’m not surprised since tech is well known for it’s lieing and cheating. The new coach went out and bought himself some players. It’s really sad when a program lies and cheats and still can’t win.

Look there is no doubt that the ACC reins supreme in college hoops.

[...] Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Mark Gottfried isn’t the only new ACC coach making waves on the recruiting trail. Brian Gregory is quietly putting together a top-15 class headlined by five-star forward Robert Carter. He also still has two scholarships to give (or save for next season when he only has two available). My guess is he’ll use at least one on a point guard in the spring. In their loss last night, the Yellow Jackets only managed four assists to ten turnovers, and only had two players make more than two field goals. Not counting Mfon Udofia and Kammeon Holsey, Georgia Tech starters went a smooth 4-25 from the field. [...]
