Shadrach  Thornton, who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1 prospect at running back, will make an official visit to Georgia Tech this weekend.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder from Liberty County High School is a “soft verbal commitment” to Kentucky, picking the Wildcats while visiting there last month. “Even when I made that commitment to Kentucky, I felt like I made a haste decision,” Thornton told the AJC. He vowed to finish out his recruiting trips, visiting N.C. State and Vanderbilt after Kentucky. Georgia Tech will be his fourth and final official visit.

“Georgia Tech gave me a scholarship offer this past summer,” Thornton said. “They had been looking at me for two years and when I went to camp last summer, that was the first time that coach [Paul Johnson] got to see me in person. I went to camp to have fun, and they really liked what I did up there and offered me.”

Georgia Tech is recruiting Thornton to play A-Back or B-Back. “The coaches are awesome. I like them a lot. It’s also a place to get a great education. I’m giving them serious consideration.”

What will Thornton be searching for the most during his visit to Tech? “Just the family feeling and how I feel around the players.

“I really got the family feeling at Vanderbilt. Those guys were awesome and intense. All the coaches were intense, and I liked it. I flew to Vanderbilt on the Saturday morning of the Georgia game. The head coach [James Franklin], who has a lot of stuff he has to do on a game day, met me at the airport. Not only did he meet me at the airport on game day, he also showed me around downtown Nashville, Tenn. Again, this is game day. That meant a lot. It’s the first time it happened, and I had been on two official visits before that. It was pretty cool at Vanderbilt, and I’m seeing if I get that family feeling at Georgia Tech this weekend.”

Georgia Tech will be trying to edge out Kentucky for Thornton’s services, although the main competition could be Vanderbilt. “As of right now, I’m really l liking Vanderbilt. It’s because of the education, and that they are trying to do something different. They are trying to turn their program around. Here in the near future, I feel like they are going to do it and I want to be part of something like that.”

After Thornton visits Georgia Tech, he will sit down with his mother and coach and go over a list of pros and cons of each of his four finalists. He expects to reach a final decision within two weeks.

Thornton has a 3.3 GPA and plans to study Civil Engineering.

Note: Georgia, as always, is loaded with top prospects at running back. However, unlike  last year with Isaiah Crowell, there’s really not one that stands clearly above all. Shadrach Thornton could finish this year as the state’s No. 1 at the position. He has an outstanding blend of size, speed, and vision. The biggest thing working against Thornton is that he plays in a rural area of Georgia, and doesn’t get as much exposure as the other running backs.

What the heck is a “soft verbal commitment”? That sounds an awful lot like “keep this offer open for me so I have something to fall back on if nothing else comes up”.

To be fair to Thornton – he wants to study civil engineering and all 4 of his schools offer that degree. Hopefully he will be able to play D 1 and take his major of choice and not be steered into something else.

Let’s be realistic here. Vanderbilt is going to turn things around? Vandy will always be outmatched as long as they are in the SEC.

He’ll get there just in time to see Clemson demolish Tech.

Never saw a coach that screamed at anothers teams player after a game turn a program around. He may fly around in a helicopter or talk with recruits on game day, before the game (which isn’t too smart) but he will NEVER turn around Vandy. Vanderbilt is a job that has such a low expectation that if you scheduled “right” and surprised a team here and there you could win 7-8 games a year and be considered a hero. (See Tech also)

When I read these articles and a kid seems so well put together and set for life I realize they are 17 and can have the “wool pulled over their eyes” easily. If this kid thinks Vandy is gonna turn things around he has a long life of buying peoples crap and being disappointed. What he needs is a mentor who actually cares about him helping him in this decision.

This kid could very well be the type of RB GT needs at BB in a bad way. Hope the coaches and players can sell him. I know Stargal will be there and I wonder what other recruits will be there?

In my opinion Shad is the BEST runningback in Ga. I saw him play in the junior bowl and he stood out amongst the other backs Mike Davis(Stephenson) Charles Purnell(Westlake) Mike Hilton(Sandy Creek) Deondre Atwater(Peachtree Ridge Tre Sorrells(Alcovy) and George Morris(Central Gwinnett…. GET HIM TECH!!!!!!

The defense of Clemson will probably come close to a shut out of Tech. They can’t pass and Clemson will jam the line, knowing that the pitch from Washington is weak also. Clemson CAN score a ton. This will be over early.

If he truely plans on Civil Engineering there is no other choice than Tech. Vandy may be a great school but does not hold a candle to any engineering program tech has.

Shadrach, we would love to have you on the Flats here at GT. You would be an excellent fit in this system. We need some explosive players in this offense and you could be the piece that fits the puzzle. Best of luck to you in your decision. Stay in state and help the Jackets roll the ACC and get a great education that will set you up for life….

Does Shadrach play on the same team as Meshach and Abednego? Shadrach sure doesn’t look like a Hebrew to me. It is amazing how black parents are so determined to give their child a name that absolutely no one else has.

After many years of hiring engineers, I was totally unaware that Kentucky had a Civil Engineering program. It must really be an outstandling engineering program-not.

Only one of his choices has won it’s conference in recent memory. I think if he gets the family vibe that all the other players have gotten, I can’t see the other schools beating Tech out. We match up academically with Vandy, family with Vandy, but WE WIN. At Tech he’ll be playing for the team that ESPN is there to watch, not trying to play spoiler to other ACC teams or UGA, Tennesee or Bama. Tech has the ability to land a big one here.

Thornton is like Dwyer – speed and size.

Shadrach Thornton:

It was surprising to read that Vandy Coach Franklin personally met you at the airport and escorted you around campus on game day.

If you look at the entirety of your visit to the Vandy / UGA game, I hope you truly see beyond James Franklin’s wolf-in-sheep’s clothing personality and demeanor.

With you current size, GPA, and desire for a Civil Engineering college course of study, others will probably disagree with me, but I feel you won’t be disappointed with choosing Georgia Tech.

I’m not saying GT’s Coach Johnson is a better coach, but as Georgia fan, I see him a better man of integrity from Coach Franklin.

Coming from this Dawg fan, I hope you choose to stay in-state, and feel Georgia Tech can provide what you are looking for in the classroom and on the gridiron.

Best wishes to you in your college decision. ..

Good luck GT against the Tigers.

Unless you graduate from an Ivy League school, all degrees are about the same to almost all employers. Shad pick a school that you like and that your family and friends can enjoy your experience with you. If flying to your games is not an issue for them, go anywhere you like.

A few classy ”Dawgs” fans today…. Since I’m exiled in New Orleans, I’m rooting for Georgia this weekend… Shadrach, I wish you the best of luck regardless. However, I can tell you from experience, Atlanta is a great city, and Georgia Tech is a great school. Perhaps even more important, Georgia is the Empire State of the South. The State of Georgia is a wonderful State, that sometimes we take for granted. But now that I’ve lived in Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana, I can tell you, Georgia looks better and better all the time. Stay in state. I hate UGA, but the hate stops at the state line.

So a coach who takes up for his players after a game is a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Give me the “The Big Bad Wolf”. Sean Williams is a punk. Anyone who acted the way he did during the vandy/ georgia game- helmet to helmet on a defenseless player 3rd qtr (not talking about the one over the middle that was called) , crotch grabbing, punch thrown) is a punk. I see where he gets that mentality (Grantham).

He sound like a strong lean to Vandy. Maybe he’s looking at graduation rates for Vandy as compared to Tech and the crime rate on the Tech campus as compared to West End in Nashville. Or maybe he’s looking at the 1AA offense Tech runs and just thinks he can do better. No brainer Shadrach. Choose Vandy. Get your degree, and play in the SEC for a program that’s on the rise.

ce 02….It is all about the interview my friend. Where you graduation is down the list in importance of landing that job. I did not say Tech was not a good school. But in the real world it just does not rank as high as you wish it did. To graduate from Tech may very well help you get an interview but then all bets are off! I promise you coach johnson will not show you around town he might shake your hand and ask you how everything is going and if there is anything you need or any questions just ask thats about it but you might not even meet him trust me i played for him at georgia southern during our championship runs and why is the AJC not talking about georgia southern this yr they should win it all this yr heck we should have won it all last yr 6 turnovers in the semifinals and we still almost won the game that is why div 1 needs a playoff we had like 3 or 4 losses last yr and almost won it all. I am telling you Tech with our georgia southern offense would be very dangerous in a playoff system just like souther always is bc you dont have much time to prepare and we run like a well oiled machine and this is coming from a life long Dawg fan and a Georgia Southern Eagle. Coach Johnson is a great coach but he does not go out of his way for players like Coach Franklin did with this kid i have never heard of a coach doing this and i got alot of friends that played college football and i train alot of kids that go on recruiting trips. When Tech got Coach Johnson i knew he would win games just wait till he gets everything in. Also i told all you Tech fans last yr that Zach Laskey was a player i know he fumbled that kick but a true freshmen should not be back there anyway especially someone who was not a full time kick returner in high school. I worked with Laskey for a few yrs he is a monster in the weight room and one of the fastest white boys you will ever see. Give him time Tech fans he will be a Tech legend i promise i cheer for him and like i said i am a big Bulldog fan.

GO DORES!! Don’t listen to these dumb dawgs badmouthing Franklin…

For the love of God, did you not see Sean Williams’ thuggish antics? Franklin simply told Grantham that he needs to be disciplined and Todd became an animal.. Williams had 2 personal fouls called and the worst hit of the day was not even called (he got suspended for it though).. that helmet-to-helmet makes the chop block (admittedly dirty, dont get me wrong) look like child’s play.. Franklin had full right to complain about Williams considering all the crap he did on the field and all the jawing he did to the Vandy sidelines.. what a thug..

get ur facts straight Dawg fans before you blindly point the blame at the other side.. Richt himself called Williams a dumbass and apologized to Franklin, that was a class act..

Dawg fans are ridiculous, and have lost all my respect.. They ignore anything that shows them in a negative light and emphasize anything that shows the other team in a negative light.. gimme a break, look at it both ways.. It was a chippy game, but Georgia played dirtier and Grantham’s response to Franklin talking to HIM (he never went to Williams directly, that MYTH is something being spread by dumb dawg fans all over message boards) was completely unwarranted.. Georgia fans just don’t get it.. Grantham has a relative “history” of such inappropriate behavior. Remember when he made the choking gesture at the Florida kicker? lmao what an ass, like seriously.. I wish Georgia fans learned the meaning of objectivity for once in their lifetime..
