Jordan Jenkins, who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1 overall college football prospect, may be close to the end of his recruiting journey.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end from Harris County High School made an unofficial visit to Alabama last weekend, and is headed to Florida this Saturday. Alabama and Florida are the co-leaders for Jenkins, followed by Auburn, UGA and Tennessee.

“I think after this Florida visit, I think his announcement is nearing,” his father, Ronald Jenkins, told the AJC. “I anticipate it definitely before the end of the season, in my opinion, or right after the end of the season. I really think he’s getting closer to his decision.

“Next Saturday at Florida is going to go a long way in his decision process, even though February is a long ways away. The visit to Florida will help clear his head on a few things.”

Harris, an AJC Super 11 selection, has official visits scheduled for Tennessee (Oct. 7), Auburn (Oct. 14), Alabama (Nov. 4), UGA (Nov. 11) and Florida (Nov. 25). Does this mean that Jenkins could announce his college decision before finishing his visits?

“Anything is possible,” the elder Jenkins said. “I myself think he should complete all his official visits. He needs to sit down and evaluate everybody. I think he needs to study depth charts and the possibility of playing early. You always want the possibility of playing early if you can. Every one of his finalists offers what he wants to major in (engineering). Some degrees are better than others. Some rank higher academically. Recruiting is a hard and difficult process.”

Alabama and Florida remain the schools to beat for Jenkins.

“Alabama and Florida are definitely on a higher plateau than some of the other schools,” said his father. “I think Auburn is closely trailing, and there’s Georgia.

“We all like Todd Grantham,” said the elder Jenkins, referring to UGA’s defensive coordinator. “Todd has made a big impression on all of us, coming to Georgia from the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is my team and Grantham is a very impressive guy, both off and on the field.”

Jenkins has been clocked at 4.53 in the 40, has a vertical jump of 39.5 inches, can power clean nearly 400 pounds, and has around a 86-inch wingspan

Can only hope he feels UGA is his best choice. So many variables play into his decision.

Best wishes to you, JJ, in whatever decision you make.

Hope to see you in the Red-and-Black and Between-the Hedges. .. Go Dawgs!

Best Offensive lineman around is Davin Tomlinson at Henry County. Handled Sandy Creek and Gator commit Quenteze Williams. Of course Richt and Bobo can’t figure it out! Another one leaves the state. Another one bites the dust

” tide roll,” Davin may play Offensive line in high school, but he’s primarily know for his defensive line work, and that’s where he’s projected in college. His wrestling background will serve him well. It looks like a two horse race between Bama and GA Tech right now as he has great relationships with both coaching staffs and feels comfortable at both campuses. I think it will eventually come down to his chosen major and whether he wants to leave the area based on his recent family issues.

Regardless of his choice, I really wish him the best; if there’s anyone who deserves it, that would be Davin.

With all the DE’s we have signed the last 2 years he may shy away from UGA . Be that as it may best of luck to the young man !

Given he’ll watch his two favorites play, the week after he visited Tuscaloosa, his heart should be in a position to tell him something this weekend.

A 400lb power clean is freakin amazing for his weight. I used to compete in power lifting and Olympic lifting events, and 400lbs would be better than 95% of the guys in his weight class.

Engineering? The fact that Tech isn’t on his list shows that he isn’t serious about engineering. There are a lot of great football teams in the South, but there is only one great engineering school.

None of the top players are going to go to UGA because the program is a mess. They might as well go to Vandy or Ole Miss because those teams are on par with UGA.

This guy looks like an Alabama type of player. Furthermore, he wants to win titles and ensure he will reach the NFL with the best coaching available. Since you only live once, then why would he go to UGA? The only way is if he has some notion that he will see the field as a freshman.

Alabama had more players leave the team than UGA including the QB & the RB and they haven’t missed a beat. Now do any of you Mark Richt loving idiots think that is not coaching????

I posted this earlier on a “dead ” blog, but go to the Athens paper and click on Dogbytes and read article titled ” Richt and team spirits lifted with win” and read Orson Charles quote. ” I’m really happy for coach Richt and the entire staff and my teammates for our win Saturday because it was an SEC win, and we don’t get many of those”………………Geez, kinda pitiful and sad.

Slydog say’s, why would you go to UGA…… That’s what we all said about Bama between Stallings and Saban, between losses and probations and wins vacated, the program was toxic for years. Bama folks don’t remember….We all do.

Why would any high school athlete of significance commit to play for a team with uncertainty at the head coach position? Who will the DC be next year? Who will the other defensive coaches be? I wish he would hold off on commitment until we see if Richt can salvage his job. If we get a new man I would hope the door would be open to give the new coach a chance at him.

Wish the kid good luck wherever he ends up. I don’t think he is going to fool anybody saying he is looking for a degree in engineering though. He knows his future probably lies on playing on Sundays so he is going to go to the school that will utilize him the quickest so he can get on the field. UGA is pretty much set for the next two years at DE, so I doubt he goes there. If he were serious about engineering, he would go to an engineering school like Tech. or such. He is putting his hook and bait out there to see who is going to promise him , that he can start as a freshman, or hear those oft repeated recriter words, you can have an immediate impact on our team. He will fall for the bait and take Alabama or Florida. UGA will be upfront with him and tell him he most likely would not see regular playing time for a few years at UGA.
Good luck to him on his decision. Seems like a a good, bright young athlete. His dad sounds like he will heavily influence his decision and that is good to see parents get involved and offer some sane advice in the insane world of college recruiting.

Paul, my point was, yes Bama is on top of the world as of now. But, you guys come on here trashing us and Richt. We have never fired a coach before he coached a game trying to pay a stripper to sleep with him. Richt has never had wins vacated. Richt has never put this program on probation. Richt has never over signed a class telling young men something not true. There is a lot of stories to be written about Bama other than the wins, just say’n. We’re down…so what….get the hell off this blog if all you want to do it throw trash. There’s plenty of Trash in Bama to talk about.

Yeah, I remember Alabama’s struggles. Now compare that to the rest of their history. And they didn’t play anymore footsie with “up and coming” coaches either. Florida realized that Ron Zook was mediocre and so they went and got Urban Meyer. I respect CMR and love Georgia, but for certain “for sure” recruits, UGA isn’t the way to go right now. All things change by season’s end though, so we will see.

Tide Roll, guess you didn’t learn how to read in school. Right from Dalvin Thomlinson’s coaches mouth.

“You can put Georgia in there, too,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said.

With you being a former all WORLD linemen and line coach, you would already know you can not judge a person’s performace from 1 game. You need to look at their overall work for an entire season!

The University of Georgia, like any school who has had a 2-3 year stretch of unsuccessful football results is in the process of evaluating this program. The AD is on record as such. I can handle comments on our play, but getting personal about Richt is crossing the line. He is probably the most respected coach AS A PERSON in the SEC. He has never stood in front of the Miami press and told them I’m busy getting this Dolphin team better and end up at Bama. He never left the Falcons in the middle of the night with a note a ended up at Arkansas. He’s a great human being……and him leaving UGA is probably not good news for the rest of the conference. There is as much talent in this state as anywhere in the country. My hope is the new guy is able to make Saban move on.

To all the Tech idiots who think if you graduate with an engineering degree from a school other than Tech your inferrior. Hate to break it to you all but just because you have a degree from a decent school doesn’t mean you will be able to pass the eye test or get through an interview with zero personality.
