WR Tramel Terry de-commits from UGA

Should UGA be alarmed by losing the commitment of Tramel Terry?

UGA both gained and lost a commitment at wide receiver over the weekend.

Tramel Terry, who is a candidate to be South Carolina’s No. 1 overall prospect for 2013, de-committed from UGA on Sunday. The day before, M.L. King senior wide receiver Blake Tibbs committed to UGA (click on story link).

Back to Terry: The speedy wide receiver from Goose Creek High School had made the surprising decision to commit early to UGA a couple of months ago at Dawg Night prospect camp.

“Yeah, I pretty much rushed my decision,” Terry told the AJC. “I don’t want to be committed to Georgia unless I’m 100 percent in. I have other schools I’m looking at. Georgia is still on top of my list. I just feel like I wasn’t committed even when I was, so it was time to go ahead and do this.”

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Terry said he has a top three, claiming UGA as the leader, following by South Carolina and Clemson.

Tramel Terry

Terry was one of three heralded juniors to commit at July’s Dawg Night prospect camp, along with Camden County quarterback Brice Ramsey and Yulee (Fla.) tailback Derrick Henry. Ramsey visited Florida last weekend but remains committed to UGA. Henry is being hotly pursued by numerous schools, most notably Florida, but has kept his pledge to UGA so far.

“I got caught up in the moment at Dawg Night and rushed my decision,” Terry said. “I didn’t think about it long enough, or study everything enough, before doing that. Now I want to start it all over and make sure I have everything together before I commit.”

There is a tremendous amount of pressure on Terry to stay in-state and play for South Carolina or Clemson. There was a backlash of negative comments on his Facebook page from South Carolina and Clemson fans when he committed to Georgia in July. Also, Terry caused an uproar on college message boards after he made plans to visit Clemson on Saturday but instead showed up at South Carolina’s game.

“I like South Carolina because it’s like home,” Terry said. “Everybody knows who I am there. It’s crazy. The coaches and the players are real nice. It’s a great football program.”

Terry on Clemson: “I feel the same way about Clemson as I do South Carolina. It’s out in the middle of nowhere but everybody treats each other like family there. It’s real cool.”

Where do things stand with UGA? Terry has yet to talk to UGA’s coaches about his change of plans. He said Bulldogs assistant John Lilly will be attending one of his upcoming games. Terry has attended South Carolina and Clemson games this season and is planning to make his first unofficial visit to UGA this season for the Auburn game.

Yeah, because no top WRs are ever under 6ft. I mean Greg Jennings is only 5′11 and he only had 2 touchdowns in the Super Bowl last year. This kid can play regardless of how tall he is. This is a big loss for Richt and crew.

Maybe, Just maybe Terry realized that Richt is on the “hotseat” for a reason.

Why commit to a team that has gone 10-3, 8-5, 6-7 and started this season 0-2!
Hey – Big win over Coastal – and what an uninspiring empty victory over Ole Miss.
UGA is in the would have should have business.

Gamecocks are winning – but so is Florida – we will have our hands full with the Gators. Unfortunately, I think this team is for real.

How will UGA fans feel if the Gators absolutely pummel UGA again this year?
Well, based on what I have seen – the new staff at Florida has their team approaching elite level – while UGA is stumbling and coming away with an empty feeling win against Ole Miss.

Seven Possible Reasons Behind His “De-Committing”….

1. He doesn’t plan on wearing power ranger costumes

2. He doesn’t plan on wearing orange jump suits at the Clarke Co Detention Facility

3. He doesn’t want the time consuming long hair and braiding that it requires

4. He doesn’t want to beat his chest and flash gang signs after inconsequential plays

5. He wants to play against Division I opponents and not high school teams from Coastal Carolina or teams that are manhandled by Vandy (i.e. Ole Miss)

6. He’s too sane

7. He’s too mature

BONUS REASON – 8. He sees no need to tweet insults to opposing coaches.

C’mon guys. Let’s stay on topic.

As a Tech fan, I actually praise the kid. Not because Georgia is doing hot, but that he pulled back his decision before he went looking at other schools. We’ve had a bunch of kids who wanted to look around and be committed. Commitment is one thing, but you want to be 100 percent sure that its the place for you.

Hopefully it turns out well for the Dawgs and he re-commits, but you gotta give the kid props for doing the right thing.

And to those saying that he’s too short, lets talk about another short receiver who recently did very well.

5′9″, 185 lbs. 16 recs, 217 yards, 2 TDs. 1 rush, 19 yards.

Not going to say this kid will be the next Wes Welker, but the kid is a talent no matter how short he is. Definitely won’t get you “beat”. Just means he will be the best slot receiver you would have in a while. A more Kris Durham-esque player.

He was too young and uninformed to be making such a big decision.

Maybe allow these kids to sign the papers but it will not be official until the Feb. of the year he will attend the college. IF THEY KNOW THEY KNOW, but if they change their mind before the Feb, date then it is OK to change.

I know that will fly with Coach Johnson. LOL

fighting chicken,

what games have you been watching? neither sc nor uf look like world beaters. true, they are 4-0, but they may be 2 of the most unimpressive 4-0 teams in the country. there’s a much better chance that both teams are 4-4 after the next 4 games for each, than 8-0.

sc schedule:
east carolina- 1-2
uga- 2-2
navy- 2-1
vandy- 2-1

They got lit up by east carolina. UGA out-played them. Navy stumbled at the end of the game. Vandy had no answer for the SC defense, but Garcia did his best to give the game away.

uf schedule
fl atlantic- 0-3
uab- 0-3
tenn- 2-1
ky- 2-2

Either Fl Atlantic or UAB is the worst team in Div 1. UT lost their best player on the opening play on offense. KY is brutally bad, in fact they may go defeated in the SEC this year.

Neither SC or UF is anything special, but then again, no one from the east looks too imposing.

Typical young kid. They get caught up in the moment and don’t think things out. It is to bge expected with young folks and I am sure he is thinking about the other commitments UGA already has at that position and weighing his chances. I think he will probably not be going to UGA. UGA has a couple of WR’s coming next year and a couple of good freshmen now on the team, so it is a loss UGA can afford. We have a 6′5″ JUCO named Outlaw I think coming next year, so I think UGA will be solid at the WR position. He probably would have rode the pine for at least a couple of years anyway.
Good luck to him wherever he lands.

Dawgerbrown

UGA used to be able to go in and “cherry-pick” talent from South Carolina. But two things are making that more difficult to do. Obviously, SC is a program that has improved, but Social Media now puts so much pressure on these kids today. As soon as they make any kind of decision fans know about it. Then being the FANatics they are make the kid’s lives a living hell if they don’t like the player’s decision. Many of these kids consider much more than just football when they decide where to play. Narrow-minded, pea-brained fans need to grow up, shut up, and support the kids as much as they do their schools. All fans, even DAWGS.

P_the_Ricker……..

I guess if LSU had played Florida’s schedule, they wouldn’t be anything special either, right? And since Georgia and Kentucky are 2-2, then they must be equal, right? I guess, if Florida upsets Bama this Saturday, then Bama must not be very good since they lost to Florida (who hasn’t played a difficult schedule), right? Dude, schedules have nothing to do with how good a team is…..ie…Boise State. Talent and coaching does. And Florida is very talented. So is Georgia. The difference right now has been coaching….as it has been in recent years.

Garcia and Jeffery are out of eligability this year (not that Garcia is that good) and it’s a possibility Lattimore will go pro after this year but definately after his Junior year. @P_The_Ricker -

You are right in that UF hasn’t played a good team yet. Their 4-0 record to-date is what was expected.

However, the way they’re winning is reason for optimism. There were a lot of unknowns coming into this year with a new staff and new system. So far the staff and adjustment to new system has gone better than expected. A lot of people here were calling out Muschamp for never being a head coach and Weis for not meshing together as an assistant. They’ve worked very well together.

What’s most exciting is the attitude that CWM, Weis and the rest of the staff has instilled. They really get after it.

Nobody’s expecting an SEC title this year for UF. Their upcoming schedule is brutal and they’re too young. They’re a better team than last year and next year, they’ll be in the hunt for the title. That’s reason for optimism.

Is there some particular reason that you referred to his commitment to Georgia as
“surprising” ? Especially in light of A.J. Green, a top South Carolina product at wide
receiver who just left, coming to Georgia ? Georgia has a long history of getting good
players out of South Carolina – not every single one, but quite a few. If you say it’s
because he’s an underclassman, then we’ll be looking to see that when you report
on any underclassman committing to an out-of-state school.

TampaGator is spot on about the difference between Florida and Georgia- COACHING!!! Always has been going back a number of years… their isn’t a difference in talent- both are state schools that get the pick of the littler. It is all about the coaching plain and simple and being put in a position to succeed… Richt had a wonderful chance to really build on something 5yrs ago and lock down VanGorder ( now I don’t believe he is as good as people think he is ) with a raise; but, chose instead to promote one of his best friends and that is when the decline started… see the trend here people… I understand the loyalty; but, football is a business and a cut throat business and it is time for a change. He promote’s Bobo then hire’s a friend of Bobo in Friend the Offensive Line Coach… and Richt has actually gotten in the way of Grantham coaching the defense as well… do you remember the first game Grantham coached and Rambo messed up— Grantham chewed his $#% out and Richt dressed down Grantham for the language saying thats not the way we do things at Georgia. Are you freaking kidding me…do you think Saban, Spurrier, Chizek or Meyer would hesitate to chew someone out for a boneheaded play.

Enough rambling on my part.

He wanted a raise to stay and Richt said no. and no I am not making anything up… there is no denying that VG wanted to an opportunity to be a head coach hence the HC job at Georgia Southern where he absolutely ran the program into the ground ( GSU Grad ‘91 )… It is time for a change plain and simple. I have never seen a coaching staff waste more talent that this current one… it is sad and pathetic. People you’re getting excited over beating an awful Ole Miss team by 2 touchdowns– my god they should have beaten them by 42pts… Compare the execution of say Alabama and Georgia— it is night and day ( and I hate Saban through and through; but, he doesn’t put up with this crap )

It amazes me the amount of people on here who think Richt will be around regardless. Did they watch the Bama,LSU or Florida game and compare how those teams play and how good they are? We would struggle with an ACC schedule as of now. Miss State took #1 LSU to mat almost.
Saturday tells us a lot, because this will be the first game against a quality foe since the last two weeks. Dawgs get handled this weekend, it’ll tell you all you need to know. Richt can’t beat a good football team….going on year two. Florida and Tech look like losses. Vandy played SC tough. Auburn has just as good of Athletes as us, with better coaching. I don’t see it. “There is a tremendous amount of pressure on Terry to stay in-state and play for South Carolina or Clemson.”

I can understand Clemson fans wanting Terry to play for them, as well as South Carolina fans doing the same. The same sentiment is often often posted here about kids leaving Georgia, as if it is somehow a disgrace to the. Peach State. I think that folks in Georgia should be proud of our exports; if a kid wants to go to Michigan or Stanford or Florida or Oklahoma because it’s a good fit, I think that’s fine. Spreads the word, in a way.

If I were a Dawgs fan, I would be more than a little concerned about the implications of this de-commitment. For years, UGA has had a huge advantage in recruiting and talent over South Carolina, but the Gamec0cks have continued to play the Dawgs competitively every year. The UGA coaches and fans tried to ignore USC. Now, USC has won two in a row, and is threatening to close the talent gap with UGA. Without that edge in talent, the current UGA coaching staff will lose more often than not to the Evil Genius’ boys . . . . With Tennessee down, Florida implementing new systems, and Georgia mired in mediocrity, the timing may be right for Spurrier to build a consistent SEC contender in Columbia.

No one is calling Spurrier a “has-been” now.

I wouldn’t panic about one decommitment. The kid got caught up in the hoopla when he visited and has since had time to think about it. He may end up at UGA in the end anyway.
That said, if a coaching change is made then good luck with this entire class. It’s almost impossible to hold together a top 20 class with a regime change….depending on the timing.

The season starts this week for us. 4-0 will more than likely turn into 4-2 after facing Bama and LSU back-to-back. Just hope we’re competitive and not get blown out like last year in Tuscaloosa.

1. Terry de-commiting is not a big deal. I agree with the Tech fan earlier that stated the kid is being honest. How many kids “commit” to hold onto a scholarship while they continue to check out other schools. Think he will end up at USC.
2. @ AAA Temp 9:46 post – yes, MS STATE played very good defense against LSU. However, I think UGA will win this game and will beat Vandy. Playing at Tennessee is 50/50 – UGA should win but strange things happen there. If UGA is sloppy like they played against us or Ole Miss – could lose both games. Also think UGA will beat Auburn.

So – here is my adjusted predictions – after the knowledge of the first 4 games:
UGA is 2-2.
remaining schedule:
MS STATE – UGA should win.
Tennessee – 50/50 – but leaning toward UGA
Vandy – UGA wins
Florida – GATORS looking very good and improving – ahead of where I thought they would be. Gators win and this game could get UGLY.
New Mex. State – UGA wins
Auburn – UGA should win
KY – UGA wins
GT – 50/50. UNC is not as good this year and last – but hung in there against GT. Just not buying GT this year ….. yet. 50/50 – lean toward UGA.

So – how does this shake out?
At worst – UGA will be 5-3 in the SEC
Losses to USC, Florida – and potentially Tennessee or Miss State – but not both.
At best – UGA will be 6-2 in the SEC.
Overall – I see UGA now going 8-4 at worst – and potentially 10-2.

Hey – this team is fighting – but has forgotton how to pull out the victory and makes stupid mistakes that will cost them. IF and a BIG IF – UGA can hang onto the ball and figure out special teams – this team has the ingrediants to have a good season – despite starting 2-2.

Funny how people say things are unreavaling in Athens when a kid who just started 11th grade and will not graduate for 16 months decommits, while a kid who will graduate in 8 months commits. How does terry’s decomitt of 2013 get more space on the website than Tibbs 2012 commit. The fact that Tibbs chose Ga over Arkansas should have been mentioned a lot more.South Carolina has not dominated UGA in either game they won. There will be a lot of receivers coming out of Georgia high schools in years to come. The high school coaches are starting to use the pass more than other years. The reason Fla. Puts out so many atheletes is because they have always threw the ball around the field. The more you throw the ball , you have a better chance of getting basketball players and other atheletes to play football.

Recruiting for Georgia is headed for a failure just like the coaching. We have become a third tier program. Richt says we’re a program on the rise. Who’s falult is it that we must rise?

Paul N Destin

He lost control of the program years ago! Your staff is average and the talent is no where the level you believe it to be and that is just the beginning of the problem. UGA is in a great position to hire a new football coach and if someone has a Mal Moore moment and does just that you will be in great shape in the coming years. Yes,,,it will hurt for a short period but if you don’t then you have 4 more tuff years ahead and then your press the rest button anyway.

@RRTDawgs…calm down man, the kid doesn’t feel like he will get alot of playing time with the talent we brought in and evidently doesn’t want to compete in hopes of cracking the lineup. Not sure that is Coach Richt’s fault, but yes I am bothered somewhat that we do seem to have some guys that give up early when things don’t go according to plan. Look for K. @Carvell, can you explain the legitimacy of “The Atlanta Sports Academy Prep School”?
I understand the need for some recruits to have to go to prep schools and junior colleges to pick up academic requirements for entry into major colleges.
But, the name itself seems to be a smack in the face of college academia. And I must admit I’ve never heard of such “school(?)”. Was it just created to be a football, b-ball factory for non qualifiers?
With the recent APS scandal still fresh in all minds, colleges and the ncaa don’t need fake schools built for sports.

CMR’s status is hurting us; recruits want to be a part of a winning tradition. This is just the beginning of a sad recruiting ending for our beloved bulldogs this year. We will recover only when a change in the coaching helm is made. As far as Terry goes, however, he better opt for Clemson as he’s gonna soon realize he made big mistake going to the Lamecrocks. USC is gonna get a recruiting hand slapping from the NCAA over the Whitney Hotel episode and it’s bound to hurt in the long run, coupled with the fact that the Old Ball Coach is notorious about not hanging around a program for more than a decade and he’s just about there now. Plus he’s now 66 years of age…time for the rocking chair or a position with ESPN.

1- GEORGIA is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 & 2011 (0% winning ratio)
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams (20% winning ratio)
3- GEORGIA is now 16-14 in its last 30 games (53% winning ratio over past 30)
4- GEORGIA is 7-10 in the past 17 SEC games (41% winning ratio against SEC teams)
5- GEORGIA is 4-5 in their last 9 games going back to last season
6- GEORGIA has won 2 of it’s last 4 games. (neither were a powerhouse)
7- GEORGIA has not beaten a Div 1A team that finished w/ a winning record in its last 18 games.

By mt calculations, we gained a bigger, WR this week than we lost with this kid. I would say, UGA got a win on this one. The one WR UGA got will be on campus next year, not 2013. Nobody should take a 2013 recruit seriously until they are committing for the next year, not two seasons down the road. UGA needs to concentrate on 2012. 2013, commits are nice to read about butare also as dependable, as thinking our Fed. Govt. will solve the unemployment problem, with thier present policies.
