UGA QB recruit Brice Ramsey kicks 57-yard field goal (UPDATED)

If you are a college coach, would you use QB Brice Ramsey at kicker or punter?

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s quarterback of the future, can play a little kicker, too.

The junior quarterback from Camden County had one of the top 10 longest field goals in the history of Georgia high school football on Friday. Ramsey, who committed early to UGA, booted a 57-yarder in the 58-0 win over Bradwell Institute.

“He actually kicked one earlier that was 57 yards but was wide right,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “He had plenty of distance on that one and he told me when he came off the field ‘You give me another chance, Coach, and I will make it.’

“Lo and behold, with two minutes at the end of the half, we got to the same location. It was fourth down and a mile. Brice got up there and drilled it. It hit the fence behind the goalpost. It had another 7-8 yards for sure.”

What about Brice at QB? On Friday, Ramsey completed 6 of 11 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while running 14 yards for another score. Ramsey also had two more TDs called back due to penalties.

“Brice is contributing in a lot of ways; most importantly, he is leading the team to wins – that’s the most important stat,” Herron said.

Is Brice good enough to kick in college? Herron said, “I doubt Georgia would want him to kick. But Brice certainly has the ability to do it … I will put it that way,”

When Camden County traveled to Ohio for a game a few weeks ago, Ramsey kicked a 55-yarder during a practice session at Ohio State. “We were talking about it then, how he could probably kick a 65-yarder,” Herron said. “I think anywhere inside of 60 yards, we feel pretty comfortable. He definitely has the leg for that.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Ramsey wears many hats at Camden County. He is the team’s long-range kicker for field goals, and also handles all kickoffs. He has booted around 75 percent of Camden’s kickoffs out of the end zone. He is also the team’s punter, averaging 38 yards.

“He’s just such a good athlete,” Herron said. “He’s one of those kids that could play scratch golf if he wanted to.”

Even though Ramsey had yet to start at quarterback for Camden County before this season, he was one of the Southeast’s most-heavily recruited players at the position. He committed to UGA over Florida, FSU and Clemson at Dawg Night prospect camp last July.

What do I think? When Brice enrolls in college, if he is the most talented kicker or punter on the team and can help his team win at either position, he will most certainly be given opportunities at both. Also, can you imagine the nightmares that Brice Ramsey could create for opposing teams on fourth downs? Ramsey could take the snap as QB, punter or kicker. He could stay on the field for all three options, creating mass confusion for defenses on fourth downs with changing out personnel. Do we send out our punt returner? Or do we stay with our dime package? Wait a minute. Are they going to try a field goal?

Can he kick for us his first 2 yrs while learning the offense and save 4 yrs of his eligibility for his QB years as well? I mean kickers aren’t really players any how right?

Sounds like a heck of an athlete UGA is getting. I was in Gainesville in 1966 to beat Auburn. Spurrier was also the punter and long distance fieldgoal. Rumors are rampant in Gainesville that either or both Henry and Hunter will flop to the Gators. Time will tell as 2013 is a long way off for kids that age.

Ramsey is one of those rare atheletes who can do it all. Been watching him play since middle school and he is the real deal. He just needs to play for a team that passes the ball a little more. Funny they compared him to Ray Guy. I remember watching Ray Guy play Ramseys Camden Team in 1968. Guy put the kickoffs in an oak tree across the road behind the goal post at the old Camden field in Woodbine. He also punted and played quarterback and Thomson won I think 52 to 0. Camden wasnt very good back then but times have changed.

I’m Mark Richt. Howdy from Mississippi. Bobo and I talked about the good old days after doing yoga this morning, and we still think Cam Newton would be a fine tight end. The NFL scouts, General Managers, and silly Heisman Trophy voters are dead wrong about QB. We really wanted Matthew Stafford to give tight end a try after reporting but he could never stay healthy long enough.

We’re “Tight End U.”

I think both options in the poll are wrong. You don’t use your quarterback as a kicker for two reasons. a) If you need a field goal at the end of the day, you don’t want to be using the kid who got the tar beat out of him running the offense all day long and just led a drive up the field to now have to kick a field goal on weary legs and b) this is a young kid who needs to be focused on being a quarterback; any distractions will retard his progress, and more importantly you don’t want him to be on the field on third down simultaneously thinking about getting the first down and being ready to kick the field goal if he doesn’t (and stopping the clock if it’s the two minute drill).

This makes for some really interesting possibilities. I can’t think of another QB at Georgia that was a kicker, but Bobby Walden (HB) was the punter in the late ’50s. I was at a game where he rolled one dead on the 1″ line. Lothridge at Georgia Tech did all 3, QB, punter and FG kicker. You don’t see that much anymore. George Blanda place-kicked and QB’ed in the NFL.

I watched Brice Ramsey play quarterback against an Ohio team on television. Based on what I saw of him in that game, he will be a great quarterback at UGA, barring injury. It’s really crazy that he could also be a great kicker, especially on long field goals. I personally would leave him at quarterback.

The question should be, “Does UGA need him to be a kicker, at all?” UGA has had a lot of success for quite a few years getting their points kickers by recruiting and I think the young man from Cartersville, does a pretty fair job and he will be here next year. Brice would represent a backup at best if the regular kicker should become injured but I would think, most of the time, he should concentrate on learning how to play QB at the SEC level, and kicking should be just a passing thing most of the time. He has a lot of raw talent to develope as a QB, but it will take time.

As far as this turning into the sarcasm page; When has a blog concerning UGA in the AJC not been one. It is the web hits that concern the AJC, not the content of the comments or childishness. There is no control on who post for the most part, and every blog, starts out on a serious subject and ends up being, a bunch of stupid comments directed at each other. By the 3rd page, if a blog even gets that far, you would have no idea what it was about, if you didn’t read the headline.

Don’t you just love that last sentence by MCarvell. “Also the GHSA record for the longest field goal is 67 yds.”. No name? A player holds the record and he doesn’t even deserve to get his name mentioned? Wow! Like yeah, the fact it was 67yds is what’s important, not who did it. Guess MC was running late for lunch or maybe about to miss his deadline!

What was missing in the article is that he drilled this field goal against the wind with it raining. As stated by someone earlier, this was a positive article about an unusual even that occured. Very rare in football today, and what happens, folks will find a reason to get off track. Brice I pray that you have a productive season and lead the Cats to the Dome. Keep setting the example for the team and they will follow you.

Good game Brice. I know you are not in a passing offense but you are doing great and maybe they will open it up a little more for you before the end of the year, especially next year.

To the rest of you….UGA is fine and will only get better this year and the next several with a good chance to win the East THIS year. Big game next week. UGA’s rebuild is going GREAT. Richt will be coach next year. Murray will be QB ALL of this year unless he gets hurt or cant move the team at all during a game and most likely will start the next 2 years. Matson will only play if Murray is hurt or cant move the offense, or mop up duty unless we put an some plays for him once in awhile. He cant run ,hes slower than Murray. He can throw and he is good but its not his time….
