Lassiter junior QB Eddie Printz committed to SMU (AJC photo)
One of Georgia’s top junior quarterbacks will be playing at SMU for former Atlanta Falcons coach June Jones.
Lassiter High School’s Eddie Printz picked Southern Methodist over offers from Kentucky and Cincinnati. Printz also had serious interest from a dozen other schools, including South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi State.
How did June Jones, the SMU football coach, lure one of Georgia’s best? “They’ve been on Eddie for quite some time,” the quarterback’s father, Ed Printz, told the AJC. “Eddie visited over the summer and really liked it. The coaches made it clear that it was a ‘committable’ scholarship offer. They are very high on Eddie and think he can do big things there. After watching SMU’s game on TV [Sunday night], Eddie said he wanted to commit, and I gave him my blessing.”
“The thing about SMU is that they were always serious. They didn’t say things like they wanted to see more film after three more games. Early on, they did a very thorough evaluation on Eddie, and they felt really good about him. Then, after Eddie had a chance to develop a relationship with them, we felt like it was a good fit.”
What about UGA? The Bulldogs had yet to offer but flirted a little bit. UGA already has a commitment from a 2013 QB, Camden County’s Brice Ramsey. “It just didn’t seem it was going to be a good fit after meeting the coaches and seeing what direction they were going in. There’s a lot of speculation about Georgia’s future right now. We never felt like it was going to be a good fit.”
What about Georgia Tech? The son of Georgia Tech assistant Mike Sewak plays football with Printz at Lassiter, giving the Yellow Jackets some inside position on an evaluation. “We’re big fans of Georgia Tech but Eddie is just not a good fit for their type of offense they run.”
After Printz committed to SMU on Monday, he was contacted by some SEC schools, among others. “They all emailed and asked why did Eddie commit so early? And does that really mean he’s 100-percent done?”his father said. “Yes, Eddie is done with the recruiting. He’s not one to commit and still look around. He’s 100-percent committed to SMU.”
Why did Printz commit as a high school junior? “So he can start helping SMU build their recruiting class for 2013. He wants to help them get back to competing on a national level.”
In case you missed it over the holiday weekend …

Brice Ramsey does not look to solid just read on 247 sports that he starting take some visits not a good sign UGA needs to have a big win against SC or a lot of recruits will open things up if we struggle again .

Very smart kid, I’m impressed. SMU is an awakening giant. A&M was better last night, but the true gap wasn’t represented by the final score (it’s much more narrow) — SMU just didn’t have a quality QB in place. He’ll get a top 50 education, get great exposure playing for June Jones in Dallas, and he’ll launch his career. June knows how to get guys into the NFL. By committing early, he can help ensure he’ll have the tools in place when he arrives. Very very smart.

He’s going to SMU for the same reasons Craig James and Eric Dickerson were lured there.

Maybe when we go back to calling The University of Georgia by its name, GEORGIA, and dispense with this UGA crap the black cloud will left. Piracy remains a crime, even for Pres Michael Adams who stole the UVA from Virginia and attempted to co-opt it. It’s GEORGIA folks.

It’s quite possible that no program in America is cleaner than SMU. That’s why they “walked through the dessert” for 25 years. No knock on UGA, G-Tech, etc., but SMU is a hidden gem of a school for a player like Prince. Couple of others would be good too, but SMU is smart.

I agree, there are several good options for Prince (Stanford would always be my #1, if they were to offer). However, SMU is a top education right in the heart of the #1 growth metro in the US (Dallas). I couldn’t believe the recruiting classes they’re landing right now (check out Rivals). They’re on their way up…just not quite ready for A&M apparently!

@RRTDawgs…Ramsey is solid for the dawgs…but that’s if Coach Bobo and Coach Richt are there…And unfortunately unless we turn things around this season, I’m afraid we will lose more than coaches….What alot of people don’t realize is that if you change coaches you have to get the right coach and staff in here and it will undoubtly set your program back before going forward…I’m hopeful we can still do the things we set out to do and that is win the SEC East…nothing has changed with that and we control our own destiny….After having time to get out my frustrations this weekend, I have had time to reflect and realize there is still a lot of season left..What we need is for these players to realize we support them and this coaching staff and also commits that have given us their verbal or are close to pulling the trigger….All is not lost….yes not a good night Sat and we have had too many like that the last two years but I still feel with the changes made this past off season we will improve in all areas…Am I concerned about our offensive philosophy…yes…I think Coach Bobo is not very imaginative in that area and under utilizes the weapons he has…If that doesn’t change it will be a long season…Hopefully he feels the heat and will open up the playbook some, even though we are young in many area…As far as the O-Line…they have to step it up for us to have a chance this seaon…thats it period really…it starts up front and my personal opinion is this has been the overall weakness in our program for several years….go dawgs

“June knows how to get guys into the NFL”
Sure he does. But not at QB. While he has placed more people in the NFL in his Hawaii days than previous coaches .. every single one of his QB’s was a one year wonder with no gauranteed contract.
Sorry, but SMU is NOT a good decision if the kids is actually thinking about the NFL. I will give all your kudos to the school otherwise, as it is a very solid academic institution .. but please don’t try to pass Junes Jones off for a QB pipeline to the NFL. If anything, his system pretty much ensures a good QB will never be given a chance at the NFL level because everyone assumes he is a system QB.

If this kid is worth 5 cents, he will change his mind by Feb. 2014. His dad did not spend all that money on QB coaches, summer camps, and personal trainers because of a failure like June Jones (prove me wrong) and a nobody program like SMU.

Evidence supports your claim, for sure. My only response would be that June Jones has never had a QB recruit of this magnitude before. He’s always taken 2- and 3-star guys and coached them up, giving them a shot at the NFL (which is actually pretty impressive). Prince will have the chance to show what he can do. If a pro career doesn’t work, he’ll have one heck of degree (if Stanford doesn’t call him!!!).

Ryan… I’ve noticed your frustration seems to have finally boiled over. I remember feeling the same way not too long ago. As a Bama fan i remember very vividly thinking it can’t get any worse after dropping the fifth strait to Auburn firing a coach the embarrassment of flirting with saban when no one in their right mind thought he would leave Miami for tuscaloosa. Then we go out and offer Rich Rod the job. When publicly turned us down I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Thank god he did….. It’s always darkest before the dawn. Hang in there… you may have to hold your nose this year but that could be a blessing in the long term. Roll Tide

Obviously none of the puppy fans on this blog have been to SMU. It’s a freaking country club. If you think that there is some money at Ugag, you ain’t seen nothing. Not to mention that SMU is going to be winning a lot more in the next few years than Ugag.

I am surprised he picked SMU, not surprised he committed this early. He is a huge get for Jones and it gives him a top flight QB (probably a top-5 or 10 QB prospect next year?) to build around and get other recruits to go there.
I could see the recruitment opening back up if something unforeseen happens.
I personally thought if UT or S Car offered he would go to one of those schools or possibly go to NC State.

The bottom line is SMU fits his style of play. Sure there are other teams out there that also fit his style, but they missed the buss. SMU is a great school, and will be competitive. Also, “Little Eddie” can now focus on school and the rest of his HS football career without having to worry about outside distractions. Sometimes people have to make the decision that is best for them, not what’s best for AJC bloggers. Congrats Eddie!

Jonquel Dawson is the best QB in the state . People better stop looking at his height and realize he can flat out throw the pigskin. I have watched him for two years at MLK and he has the skills that not many in high school have. The recruiting services over and under rate a lot of players. Some of the analysts really don’t know the game they just go on what some one tells them.

I cannot understand how any high school coach could steer any young man toward GA right now. Their coach is on a hot seat and bound to be fired during or after this year so a recruit doesn’t know who his mentor will be there. They do not have a winning program and have had a lot of off campus behavioral issues, not conducive to a recruit. Besides, they have the second ugliest uniforms to Maryland. Both teams should be called the Clown, from the way they play and look.
