Nation’s No. 1 RB defends UGA’s Mark Richt after loss

Will Boise State loss affect UGA's recruiting efforts?

If Mark Richt wanted somebody to take his side after Georgia’s loss to Boise State, one of his preferences would surely be the nation’s No. 1-ranked running back.

Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., who is heavily considering UGA, defended the Bulldogs’ coach after the loss on Twitter:

“People need to stop hating on Coach Richt !!!”

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Marshall is scheduled to take an official visit to UGA on Saturday’s for the South Carolina game. He has also scheduled recruiting trips to Notre Dame and Florida, with two more to be named.

What about the presence of Isaiah Crowell? Wouldn’t that scare off any top RB recruit? No, according to Marshall, who explained his perspective to UGASports/Rivals.com:

“I do not want to be the only guy. I would love to play with another back because I do not want to take a beating. Especially in the SEC, if you want to have a long pro career, you want to split the carries with someone else. I saw Isaiah Crowell from last year and he is very good. I would like to play with a guy like that.”

UGA has 13 commitments for its 2012 college football recruiting class after Friday’s pledge by Thomson DT John John Atkins.

Why wouldn’t Keith Marshall sign with UGA? He will start immediately unless he is another product of the Rivals hype machine like Isaiah Crowell.

Crowell was a huge disappointment against Boise.

Crowell is a bust but I don’t want Keith Marshall. He’s soft. I want a tough runningback who wants the ball every d@mn down

Crowell was a huge disappointment vs Boise? hahhahaha…. It was just a game plan that went awry, that’s all. UGA tried to run up the middle too often and outmuscle Boise. They should have bounced those runs outside, i.e., feed Crowell early and often (Remember the Boykin run?). This would have made the pass protection better and those Richard Samuel fall down, tip toeing, plunges up the middle would have had more room. It’s simple: Boise made adjustments on both offense and defense throughout the game, UGA didn’t. This one’s on the coaching staff.

Buckhead Dawg,

15 carries for 60 yards is definitely not a disappointment for a true freshman in his first game.

Don’t know what game you were watching, Buckhead Dawg, but Crowell was one of the few bright spots from a UGA perspective on the entire evening. He got every inch of those 60 yards on his own.

Crowell will be fine in anybody’s offense as long as he has a line that will block and a competent OC. Bobo couldn’t coach my kid’s peewee team. No need for Marshall to visit Boise, Petesen will be UGA’s next coach.

Until someone steps up, the only position that is safe on offense is TE and Crowell if he starts and also Mitchell and maybe Murray. Someone needs to light some fire under both the OL and the DL and also the entire coaching staff. Clearly the team was not properly prepared for the Boise attack. Grantham’s D is turning out to be a bust. All this talk in practice about Branden Smith stepping up was premature because I saw him doing a lot of arm tackling. If we could have four quarters like the 1st quarter the defense will be fine but, they still need a lot of work. As a whole the team looked pretty out coached and still not in top shape.

Crowell can’t block at this point and it showed big on Saturday night! He will be a goodun for sure but you’re asking way too much from a kid. He was not tuff in HS and has a way to go but he will get there in the end. The SEC isn’t Carver HS!

Regarding the Bose State game………I really wanted UGA to win. My wife is a huge UGA fan and I truly pull for UGA in almost every game except when they play GT. I like it when UGA has a good season and is highly ranked (when UGA is ranked in the Top 25; it is so much sweeter when GT finds a way to beat them). I am also VERY proud of the great state of Georgia and I want all of our college teams to be successful. Also, I hate the fact that Boise State will be in the running for a BCS game and it makes me sick that they have a chance at the NC game with such a weak schedule!!

UGA fans need to stop pounding Richt…….if they keep on clammering for his head, one day he WILL actually be fired and then the rebuilding begins. UGA could do a lot worse than Richt, but the ignnorrant (spelled the word wrong on purpose) UGA fans do not believe this to be true. It is fairly obvious to everyone that Richt will be gone soon; more than likely after this season (2 more years max).

The fact that Richt and company will be gone soon and the rabid negativity of the UGA faithful towards Richt, Bobo & Garrett will most definitely have a negative affect on recruiting……..most of the current recruits know Richt will be gone very soon; I will be shocked if some (maybe even several) of the highly touted recruits decide to stay committed to UGA. UGA will lose 3 or more current recruits and most of the top notch recruits considering UGA will seriously consider other schools. Face the facts; it is simply reality at this juncture.

Why do UGA fans continue to worry about recruiting every year under Richt? He has proven time and time again that he WILL land a great/good class, and WON’T do anything with it. UGA’s roster is young and full of good talent. Time to bite the bullet, and take the small recruiting hit that a coaching transition will bring. Otherwise, UGA will continue to have talented, yet underdeveloped, selfish, underachieving players and teams. Look at UF.. Meyer leaves, and UF brings in a slightly above average class (DB and QB classes were great) but not what they’re used to. They hire UGA’s own, Will Muschamp, and are now on FIRE recrutiing after only one below average (by their standards) class. They are set to finish with a ton of great players, especially on defense (go figure with WIll Muschamp) along with Diggs and Agholor. Same thing will happen with UGA. We need to have McGarity (Foley understudy) go find the brightest young up and coming coach, even if he’s an asst, and make him an offer he can’t refuse. WE WILL always recruit well in our state, regardless of who the coach is, and that coach will already have a loaded roster. Let’s make it happen.

Recruiting is NOT and never will be the problem at UGA. It all starts up front and until UGA lands some talent along the O-line and coaches that talent up… it wont matter who’s running and throwing the ball. I didn’t see too many holes for the RB’s to run through. I hope UGA can turn it around Saturday… Roll Tide

Sad however that our program has deteriorated so badly that a high school recruit feels the need to defend an SEC Head Coach.

The gameplan didnt work and Bobo never made an effort to change it… running a drew play from the shotgun and 1st and 10 for 1 yard and then again on 2nd and 9 for 1 yard then throw it on 3rd and 8 is hard to consistently accomplish. With our 30 pound advantage on the O line we should have lined up in more two tight end and goal line sets and just pounded.

Why in the world would any highly sought after recruit consider the Bulldogs? If Mark Richt stays, he’ll underutilize their talent and they’ll never meet their full potential and play in important games because Mark Richt and his staff doesn’t know how to coach a football game.

If Mark Richt leaves, either by choice or by force, then there’s no telling who will replace him and whether the recruit would even be interested in the direction of the new program.

The Bulldogs are irrelevant until Mark Richt is gone, and the Bulldog fans will be nothing more than neurotic with your highs and lows with then great recruiting classes and the waste of their talents until he leaves. If he had an ounce of self-respect, or respect for the UGA program, Mark Richt would step down, but all he cares about is taking your money and looking good in front of the camera.

I wonder if we offered Keith Marshall’s coach or OC the Mike Bobo position, if that would guarantee Keith coming to UGA?

Up until last night, I defended Mark Richt. I wanted him to have a season that would shut up the detractors. I wanted him to be at UGA for 20 years or longer.

now, I want him gone. At the very least demote Bobo right now and get someone in who is a fantastic offensive mind. Hire Keith Marshall’s coach as a consultant… if that is legal. Get him to make the calls on Saturday over the telephone or fly him in.

I agree that Bobo needs to go go immediately. I have defended Richt too and am starting to get onboard with the “fire Richt” mentality unless some drastic changes happen. The fact that he wasn’t able to win a NC when we had Stafford and Moreno and other talented players mystifies me. We should have won at least 1 NC over the last decade & it hasn’t happened. I like Richt but I am tired of seeing the Dawgs get outplayed. If they lose to SC then it will not bode well for our program.

@JRW7..Why don’t you ask Oklahoma, Va Tech about 2-3 stars beating 5 star players…I believe if you talked the coaches of those teams they would tell what everyone is learning…Boise State is very, very good…

@RRTDawgs…I feel your pain, as much as it hurts it is becoming increasingly difficult to lose faith in Coach Richt to turn this thing around, but lets be a litttle patient and see what happens the next few weeks…I do agree however, that Coach Bobo as an OC is very disappointing…I have given him a pass before and defended him, but his playcalling seems very predictable…However, with that being said the QB should be able to get us out of a bad play when we line up with an audible if he recognizes some patterns that the defense is giving him..I’m not sure if Murray is doing that…so i’m not going to put all blame on Coach Bobo…also we had two shots last night to get a first down with 2 yds or less where Coach Richt tried to show faith in our guys, but they couldn’t do it…At some point the players have to execute don’t you think…No excuse for not being able to pick up those yards if you want to be a good team…Yes, we could run some kind of play action or a toss sweep that may have been a better call but still if our O-line cannot get that push then we have more problems than Coach Bobo’s play calling…Just my two cents worth and believe me I am extremely upset, not trying to be a homer, but as the day has gone by I have rethought some of my initial knee-jerk reactions and disappointment from last night…go dawgs

@RRTDawgs..I would love just to see Coach Richt show any kind of emotion on the sideline…Maybe he got in the face of a player or two from time to time as my previous coaches did, it might at least get their attention…Also, Boykin is a fine player, and probably one of the few bright spots on our team last night…but if one of my players tweeted another Coach, fun or no fun as he did, his butt would be sitting…Sorry, but too much of that stuff going on and Coach Richt seemed to laugh it off based on what i read…Maybe it isn’t a big deal with this instant communications of today, but I can assure I would have never dared to do that nor allow a player to do that if i knew about it…It shows some of the problems our team has…Where are our team leaders…This is a huge game for Coach Richt and the players….Lose this game and I believe the season will fall apart just due how many people will give up…Hope I am so wrong but I don’t like some of the stuff I am already hearing….go dawgs..and we need some good breaks for this team, it really deserves some good things to happen for all involved….
