Mike Davis (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)
Could Florida be in danger of losing one of Georgia’s top running backs?
Stephenson High School’s Mike Davis, who committed early to the Gators, confirmed to the AJC that he plans to visit other schools but remains committed to Florida.
“I just want to take my visits with my teammates,” Davis explained. “There’s nothing there with me committing to another school. It’s just me going to have fun with my teammates while they are having fun. I want to enjoy the time with them because I know this might be my last time with them. Of course I’m committed to the Florida Gators. I’m not trying to go anywhere else.”
Which other schools may get visits from Davis? He isn’t ready to say. “I don’t know.” Davis had around 15 early offers when he committed to Florida last February over Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Penn State. What about UGA or Georgia Tech? “I haven’t heard anything from Georgia,” he said. If Davis goes on a trip with a teammate, it may be to South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt or Miami – some of the schools where his Stephenson teammates have committed.
Back to Florida: Davis said he has proof that he’s firmly committed to the Gators. “I think I showed that on the video. I did the Gator Chomp in the end zone after I scored. I had everybody doing it in the stands.”
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Davis was talking about his electrifying 71-yard touchdown run (see video below) in Stephenson’s 14-3 win over Parkview last Friday. It was a much-needed jolt after the entire Stephenson offense struggled in the preseason. His older brother, former Clemson tailback James Davis, was in attendance.
“I just wanted to make a big play for my team,” Davis said. “We were struggling early on with a team we shouldn’t have been struggling with, in my opinion. You know, they say defense is always ahead of offense when you first start a football season, so I just wanted to get us going on that side of the ball.”
Davis said his older brother, who is awaiting a call from another NFL team after being released from the Washington Redskins, was proud. “He said it was crazy how I made defenders look confused and off balance on that run,” Davis said. “I’m just glad I could do something to help us win. That’s the only thing that matters.”

In a sense, every recruit out there that has committed is a candidate for switching schools. Quite a few of them take official visits to other places to get a free steak dinner, see the sights and have some fun. Sounds like Davis is sticking with UF.

This is all part of the game. How many of you all have been on an “Official” recruiting visit? I am willing to think maybe 1 or 2 posters have been on a real recruiting visit. I can speak from experience, these visits are first class. From stepping off the plane to being driven back to the airport. I will say this. There are some coaches who will not schedule official visits from players whom they do not feel they have a real shot at landing. With his comments, I would worry about some coaches not allowing him to accompany his friends.

Did you Dawg fans read Aaron Murray’s comments in the Athens Banner Herald’s Sunday football preview. They asked a number of players to relate unusual experiences on recruiting trips. Murray takes it upon himself to relate a coach telling him he was going to take him to the film room, turn off all the lights, and “give him a ride he would never forget”. What is wrong with this kid? Is he so stuck on himself thet he wants us all to know grown men are attracted to him? Young kids read these previews. the guy needs to keep his mouth shut. Next, I make the mistake of watching Chuck Dowdle’s preview of the Dawgs, and for some reason it includes a segment of Murray and Ben Jones viewing an i-pod. When they talk to one another, I swear it looks like they’re about to kiss. They’re literally about 1 inch away from one another. If Richt’s not willing to do something about this crap (and apparently he’s not), then McGarity needs to step in. It’s downright disgusting. Give me D. J. Shockley and Cam Newton over this “In love with myself” Murray any day.

Ok, now I understand the criteria. To be consistent, you’d have to add the 1984 national championship to UF’s total. Sagarin, the New York Times and the Sporting News, among others, awarded Florida the national championship that year (which included a 27-0 win over Georgia).

Georgia has excellent football tradition going back to the 50’s. Florida has great tradition going back to the 1990s. Ray, that’s my point – if you can cherry pick an organization that thought that an 8-1-2 Georgia team was more deserving of the 1968 national title than undefeated Ohio State and Penn State teams, then it’s just as legitimate to accept Florida’s 1984 title, despite probation, over the absurdity of granting the title to a BYU team that beat SEVEN teams with losing records during the regular season and claimed its championship with a win in the Holiday Bowl over a 6-6 Michigan team. Once you abandon the “poll of record” for any year (AP, now BCS), then anything goes.

You can’t force the Sporting News, Litkenhous or the NY Times to vacate anything – that’s the point. You can count every national title awarded by every organization from the Athens-Banner Herald to the Gainesville Sun to People magazine as if their award mattered as much as the AP or BCS title, but it becomes a joke. You end up with 5 or 6 teams claiming to be national champions every year.

there is NO way in hell uga was close to sniffing a national championship in 68.
‘The 1968 Ohio State Buckeyes football team is considered one of the strongest in OSU history, fielding 11 All-Americans and six first-round NFL draft picks.’
that osu team is still considered one of college football’s all time great teams. EVER!!!!!!!!!!! infamous jack tatum was one of the stars on that defense. jack tatum meet herschel walker. no contest.
beat a top 10 michigan 50-14. 5 of their ‘10 wins’ were against top 15 opponents. Purdue was no1 when osu shut them out. usc was no 1 in one of the polls when they played in the rose bowl which is usc’s home field. buckeyes beat them and oj simpson in a come from behind victory AT THEIR PLACE.
the win against usc was against an oj simpson led no 2 usc in the rose bowl 27-16.
AP NO 1 COACHES POLL NO1. consensus national championship.
for any dawg to even think that they won a nc in 68 is a f’n joke. just because some bum f…. rag says that uga was national champ that year does NOT make it so. if i remember right uga had 2 losses that year. national champ? ….. what a joke.
i would go so far to say that uga has never even sniffed a season like the osu season of 68. uga’s only glory year was the herchel walker year 31 YEARS AGO. when you talk to any dawg… the highlight year was the year hershel played. that team had nothing even close to what the bucks had in 1968.

This is a non article. This is the reason why our athletes at our school are targets of jealousy and irresponsible people in the community, mainly adults. You journalist go out looking for a story, and then when the kid offers to give the interview, you make it into something that it really isnt. This kid has given no indication whatsoever that he is not going to florida. From your quotes in your article he doesnt even implicate that he may even switch from florida. He specifically states that he is still going to florida. So why right the article still with the title that the article has? There not in danger of losing him. And then comes the irresponsible adults on here who are quick to label judgement on a teenage KID and call him a “me” guy just because he said he wants to take the visits with his teammates and enjoy the trips. He also states he does what he can to help his team. If the colleges are gonna still allow him to take his visits on their expense, with his teammates, why wouldnt you go? You get an opportunity to see some of the finest institutions in the country for free, and catch a game, all with your friends. You get to have a chance to see what other parts of the country has to offer. Obviously some of you cant grasp that concept, and obviously some of you dont know how recruiting works. I took all of my visits as well. You never burn your bridges to early, because Florida could just as easily come back and say that they dont want him anymore. Well if that happens, at least he has gone to other campuses and seen what they have to offer. This kid didnt call AJC for the interview, you all went to him. You all should be responsible in your journalism when writting articles with no factual evidence or basis, instead of just jumping to conclusions. These kids receive racial remarks thrown at them and threats from crazed fans and jealous people in the community. Im just saying be more responsible in your journalism of all the high school athletes, or dont report at all.

@Jag Alum, thanks for your comments. If one of the top college football in Georgia is committed to a school (especially for as long as Mike has been committed to Florida) yet states he is visiting other schools, we will always write about it, as will the rest of the Recruiting media. Why? Visiting other schools always leaves open the possibility that a kid will switch his commitment. I’m not saying it will happen with Mike because he appears pretty solid, but it happens all the time with kids committed but still visiting other schools.

Thanks for your response Mr. Carvell. I just know the scrutiny that our kids at my alum and in my community is going through because of the media attention they are getting, although it is positive. People are gunning for them as though they have wrecked society, its really sad. They are literally trying to find someway to ruin their futures, mainly adults from other communities. I just feel as though they dont need the extra unwarranted attention if it doesnt have to be there. Their doing something positive. With them its damned if they do, and damned if they dont. They are doing what they have to do to go to college and excel in life, and people are negative and trying to ruin them. If they were getting in trouble and being unruly, people will try and ruin them as well. Its getting bad for no reason, particularly from a affluent community not to far from ours across the county line………..I just know what their going through and its frustrating to see, especially when their trying to do something positive.
