Georgia Tech was the last college visit for “Big John” Atkins announces his decision on Friday morning.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman from Thomson High School named UGA, Georgia Tech, Florida, Auburn and Clemson as his finalists.

Georgia Tech was the school that had the opportunity to make a last impression.

Big John made an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech on Saturday; the coaching staff was gone by the time he arrived, but he spent a few hours hanging out with some of the players.

“It went good; I like Georgia Tech because they are like a family,” Atkins told the AJC.

What about archrival UGA? “I’ve liked them ever since I was younger,” he said.

Georgia Tech and UGA appear to have inside position, along with Auburn, because Atkins has traveled to the campus of all three. He has never visited Florida and Clemson, but still says they are among his finalists.

Both Georgia Tech and UGA have a history at Thomson, located 60 miles away from Athens and around 100 miles from Atlanta. Former Georgia Tech running back greats Eddie Lee Ivery and Jerry Mays played at Thomson High School, as did former UGA linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler.

Why did Big John pick Friday to announce? “I can get that big decision over with and focus on my SAT and ACT scores and my senior year of football,” he said.

Atkins has a 2.7 GPA and will study to be an athletic trainer or Criminal Justice in college. “I just want to go to a place that feels like home, and get a great education,” he said.

Bet a lot of dog fans think he can get a lot of crime data just by living in Atlanta….hopefully it would not be OJT.

He’s a great athlete, but lack of majors is going to kill Tech again. As long as he stays in state, and if he chooses the dawgs, I hope he eats too much turkey on Thanksgiving to play football on Saturday.

You can be whatever you want to be with a Georgia Tech education. Folks would be surprised to know the number of Tech graduates who are lawyers, doctors, writers, sportscasters, etc. The basic four year degree (five or six years or longer for some of the smartest) prepares you for a very successful career and the graduate program of your choice. Sounds like John Atkins has his priorities in order and I wish him the best no matter where he decides to go to college.

Glad dawg fans seem to think he is a lock.

Current GT OL JC Lanier is a good friend to Atkins as they played at the same HS. He spent a lot of time with JC on the visit.

Depth chart favors GT as well. Could be change, wouldn’t call him a UGA lock at this point.

So much for the theory that GA Tech only goes after kids with great grades. Must sound reassuring when your team gets beat down all the time.

I would be thrilled if he comes to Tech. If not hopefully UGA. I like to see talent like this stay in state.

Either way, good luck John!

Let’s see Carvell, his choices are Clemson, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Florida and UGA – not Georgia, UGA. Why is it with you Clemson is Clemson, Auburn is Auburn, Florida is Florida, Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech but Georgia is UGA? I can understand LSU, FSU, but come on dude, is it that hard to type the name Georgia?

Yeah he will pick Uga over Georgia tech because he is not smart enough for gt. His gpa is only a 2.7 lmao and with that you can’t get into tech. Good luck young man at a school that takes only rednecks and dumb ones at that. They will find a way to get you in school up their. They usually do. Hahahaha

Well, he will get a lot of hands on experience in criminal justice while hanging around the UGA football team. He’d basically have 4 or 5 years of intern experience under his belt as soon as he got out of school.

JB,
Not that you care, but he came on an unannounced unofficial visit and talked to the players while taking another tour with no coach in his ear. From what I heard he never told the coaching staff he would be there or that he wanted to talk. In my opinion that is a smart move on Atkins part. Hr gets one on one time with players to learn about a school and program he is interested in. As far as the 2.7 goes he has a year to bring that up and fellow GT fans lets not pretend a 2.7 won’t get a player in. Good luck to the kid and I hope to see him on the flats.

Someone deciding to commit a murder has nothing to do with what college they attended. It has everything to do with the way they were raised and the person they became from that rearing.

John had a great visit hanging with some players, seeing how things really go without a “sales” pitch or the pressure normally associated with visits; which is exactly what he wanted. John wanted that honest dialogue and how the guys got along; and just a chance to get away from the whole recruiting process. This is exactly what John got on his visit this past weekend at GA Tech.

Regarding his major, there is no problem with John finding one that will meet his needs with the Jackets; he’s already met with the Academic Advisors. The only question is where John will feel most comfortable. Regardless of where that will be, I wish him the very best.

As a recruit, getting past going to school that will be on probation your whole career like Georgia Tech has to be hard. As far as the coaches not being there, where are they if they’re not on campus a week before the season starts?

It would shock the state if he chose anyone but UGA. He is a UGA fan and has the academic qualifications to make that school. As a Clemson faithful…we’d love to see him at Howard’s Rock but doubtful we have much of a shot since he hasn’t visited. Why the article when he is 99% in Richt’s back pocket? Likely a secret commitment to them for months.
