Keith Marshall, nation’s No. 1 RB, will make official visit to UGA for South Carolina game

Will the presence of Isaiah Crowell help or hurt UGA's chances at landing a top RB prospect?

  • BREAKING: Top Georgia LB commits to Auburn (go here)

UGA has a shot at the nation’s No. 1-ranked running back.

Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., said UGA will be one of his three official visits, along with Notre Dame and Florida, he announced via Twitter.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder will make his recruiting trip for UGA’s  game against South Carolina on Sept. 10.

What about Isaiah Crowell at UGA? Wouldn’t that scare off any top RB prospect from even considering UGA? Surprisingly, the answer is “no” from Marshall, as Crowell’s presence is actually a positive. Marshall explained his perspective recently to UGASports/Rivals.com’s Radi Nabulsi:

“I do not want to be the only guy. I would love to play with another back because I do not want to take a beating. Especially in the SEC, if you want to have a long pro career, you want to split the carries with someone else. I saw Isaiah Crowell from last year and he is very good. I would like to play with a guy like that.”

Marshall will take all five official visits and wait until after his senior season to announce his college decision. He is ranked the No. 1 RB by Scout.com and the No. 1 all-purpose RB by Rivals.

  • Tray Matthews, one of Georgia’s top college football prospects for 2013 (that’s next year, not this year), committed to UGA over Alabama. No one is really quite sure what to make out of UGA’s 2012 class. But 2013, despite being far, far away, is shaping up rather well for the Bulldogs (click here for story link)
  • Basketball: North Clayton small forward Marcus Hunt may be Georgia’s top available prospect left on the board for the perimeter. The 6-foot-5 Hunt has narrowed down to eight  schools: Georgia Tech and UGA, along with Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. “I really don’t know yet if I’m going to sign early [in November] or wait [until spring]. I might just keep the list at eight or trim it again. Right now, I don’t know,” Hunt told the Clayton News Daily’s Derrick Mahone.
  • Lincoln County OL Charles Folger (6-5, 220) was offered by Tusculum, and has serious interest from Carson-Newman.

Crowell, Marshall, Henry (c/o 13), Williams (c/o 14) would give the Dawgs possibly the #1 RB in the US 4 straight yrs

Marshall will be a Dawg. Bank on it. He is REALLY high on the Dawgs. If we could land Crowell, Marshall and Henry in 3 straight classes, that would be amazing. And fun to watch no less.

The Butch Davis firing helped UGA but don’t count out UF or Notre Dame. The way he is thinking about the pros is a good thing. He has his head on straight and would be a great addition to UGA. If UGA lands him and keeps Theus and can hopefully add Avery Young then they will have their tackles, RB and QB (Ramsey) for the future. Can’t complain about that.

@Concrete Pete, thanks for your comment. It will be interesting to see how Stanley Williams (2014 UGA commit from Apalachee HS) will develop over the next three years of high school — and what college position he will project to play as a senior. He’s 5-8 and 170 pounds now. Probably a college RB but maybe not.

Come on Carvell. “Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., said UGA will be one of his THREE official visits, along with Notre Dame and Florida, he announced via Twitter.”

Then, a few paragraphs down. “Marshall will take all FIVE official visits and wait until after his senior season to announce his college decision.

which is it. 3 official visits or 5 official visits because it really does make a difference in my eyes. I’d much rather be in the top 3 than in the top 5 even if we were at the top of the list in both having only Florida and ND to beat gives us a better shot

wow, for sure not the next Herschel, the great ones want the ball in their hands. Bet UGA pulls their offer after that comment.

Thats good this kid realizes what a 2 or even 3 back system can do for your health. If you are good, the pros will be waiting on you no matter how many carries you get. Most pro teams aren’t willing to draft a rb in the first round anymore due to the banging they go through in college anyway. Good luck kid. I love that UGA is the closest to Raleigh.

Do 2012 recruits even remember Cadillac and Ronnie playing together at Allbarn?

I just saying, what if this kids turns out to be the real deal, type of back that can carry a team to National title, but he wants to sit half the game because of his pro career, may work out for him but may also hurt the team because he doesn’t want to play because he “may” get hurt.

Also those that play not to get hurt are the ones that seem to get hurt 1st. Can’t play football that way.

This is the kind of recruiting that will win championchips! All you techie haters can just sit back and wait for the annual pounding you get from the Dawgs. In fact, you have become so small on our schedule, you may have to play in Athens every year just to stay on our schedule.

Yet you would still want him sitting half the game?

4th and 1 against Bama for SEC, UGA down by 3, Richt call on Marshall who has 220 yerds on 18 rushes already, but Marshall says no, let Crowell take it I may get hurt and ruin my pro career.

That aint right.

He has an offer from Tech, it not about UGA, he may end up at Florida or ND. I just think it should be about helping the team 1st, the pro career will take care of it’s self.

Mr. Marshall visits UF during the Florida St. game. This is NOT in the bags fellas. And having Mr. Gurly there will either antagonize him or force him to make a decision quick. Let’s pray for the latter. I’m not saying the kid doesn’t want competition, but he is #1 all-purpose back and UGA isn’t exactly dealing with a seller’s market. He can wait it out as long as Crowell did.

What a backfield we would have! Negativity aside, if these players gel we could have something special in Athens for years to come. CMR has given us plenty of good years, let’s give him a chance to see this through and quit jumping on board with the Saban trolls. We can’t get every great athlete but it speaks volumes that we are a contender for the nations best athletes regardless where they’re from. CMR is doing this while riding a 6 win season!!! These kids know what most true GA fans know, the DAWGS can’t be kept on a leash for very long. Here’s to a good year for the entire DAWG nation and to CMR.

Marshall is all Dawg. Remember Richt saying some of the guys want that #4 but he’s saving it for the upcoming class? Guess what # Mr. Marshall wears. He’ll likely make it official the weekend of Sept. 10 when he’s in Athens.

Getting Marshall is why I couldn’t help but chuckle at the article about Drake going to Bama and getting away from UGA. So many folks replied that we’re losing top guys blah, blah, blah. Fact of the matter is Drake couldn’t hold Keith’s jockstrap. I’ll take the elite kid from Carolina over the rather pedestrian instate kid every day of the week.

How can the statement be out of context? He basically said that he doesn’t want to be the only running back so that he can have a longer pro career. Im not sure what evidence he is basing this off of either. You could just as easily say that his body won’t be ready for the pounding it will take if he does go pro.

Why wouldn’t you want five star talent at every position…Opposing teams could never take a play off…by the end of the game they would be physically and mentally through….but you Tech fans are used to that..with all the beatings you’ve been taking from teams in the ACC running all those two and three star athletes down your throat every game….grow up…pick an argument that you have a chance of winning next time…idiot!
