Stephenson High School's Class of 2012 is a candidate to lead the nation for the number of seniors that will sign major-college football scholarships (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)
Do you want to some of the state’s top college football prospects in one place?
At least a dozen will play on display at a high school scrimmage at 7 p.m. at DeKalb’s Hallford Stadium.
It’s a football scrimmage between Stephenson and Tucker.
Everybody knows about Stephenson. They’ve got enough talent to compete with a small college (they tried to scrimmage Valdosta State but GHSA wouldn’t allow it. Kidding) Stephenson has 11 seniors that have committed to D1 schools, including 7 to the SEC. The top Stephenson players to watch are DE Jarontay Jones (committed to Virginia Tech), LB Raphael Kirby (Miami), tailback Mike Davis (Florida) and defensive lineman Jafar Mann (Florida).
Then there is Tucker.
For years, Tucker — and not Stephenson — was DeKalb County’s haven for college talent. This year, Tucker doesn’t have as many, but as always they have a few good ones. Linebacker Jacob Sealand is headed to Vanderbilt, picking the Commodores over Miami, among many others. Defensive end Josh Dawson could’ve gone to about any school in the USA, but rather surprised everybody by picking Vandy over Notre Dame and UGA, among others.

Carvell, there are other schools to cover besides Stephenson. When they take all that talent and get past the 2nd round THEN you can celebrate them. Good for the kids going to school, but we’re all tired of hearing about it. Write a different story. If you want to write about Stephenson, how bout doing a feature on how they recruit and take players from other schools in the metro area? Or how the ‘recruiting coordinator’ at Stephenson calls/contacts players from other schools about joining the Jags next great class?

Darryl Gamble had a great game last night for the Chargers 8 tackles 7 solo 1 sack started the game was a free agent pick up and all the papers in San Diego are in love with this Bulldog they were saying who is this kid he is playing like a 1 rounder. Great game
No doubt Stephenson is stacked but so is MLK and East Coweta

Starters will only play two quarters, with JV/9th graders playing the other two quarters. Tucker will be young and inexperienced, so it’ll be interesting to see how they perform against the Stephenson juggernaut.

How reliable is that news on Texas A&M. When will it get announced and will Florida State, Clemson or Oklahoma be the other team picked. I think it is great if it happens.

Well this is more interest to me than Braves, Falcons, PGA or Other. I’ve seen the Kirby guy play when he was at Parkview. Smartest move in the world to leave there, hard for me to say that because I like Parkview. Will be interesting to see how he impacts the Jags defense. Stephenson wins the recruiting talk and thats my many are sick of them but thats what peopel talk about recruits. On the field specifically on the sideline is where I’ll be watching. If it comes down to a field goal tonight or any game I’m not taking Stephenson I’ll just have to say it.
ML King has fixed that issue and you can take it to the bank.

Tx should flat out be independent….Big 12 is letting Texas dictate them instead of other way around.
SEC is much bigger payday for OK or TX A&M, BUT since Nebraska left, OK has even easier route to winning championships. Why would OK go to conference where they won’t be able to win half as much as their use too? Texas A&M won’t win anything in SEC…If it’s just about money then…..
SEC doesn’t need these teams…schedule them as non-conference.
FSWho had their chance like Miami in the last expansion and they both wimped out to bully the ACC and now they don’t even do that.
Screw these teams.

Can anybody give me their theory why UGA had such a great in-state recruiting season last year (18 of top 30 in-state players vs proj this year:6 of top 30) and this year they stink!! Losing the top player @ each position this year (except Johnathan Taylor)!! Cannot state that UGA had a great recruiting year last year, because so did many of the schools listed in the Top 10 so far this year!!

Woooow!!! Tucker defense if for real. They literally dominated Stephenson. I could see Stephenson definitely has great players. This may have been the best thing for them. I sure they will build off of this and may go on to win the state. Until I see someone with more talent they are my favorite.

Tucker looked more like the team with the most D1 prospects.. Defense is very fast and tackle well. Stephensen was very unimpressive based off all the hype. Stephensen has virtually no passing game. If passing game can evolve they can be dangerous in playoffs if it doesnt this will be another early exit from playoffs.

Stephenson and Tucker defense looked good all night. Stephenson players looked like they were out of shape. Tucker dominated Stephenson line all night. Stephenson wideout got behind Tucker secondary , but the QB couldn’t make a throw. Tucker will be the team to beat in 4A and Stephenson until their offensive and defensive get a real NASTY ATTITUDE it going to be a long year. The two players that really stood out was Tucker #45 and Stephenson #22. These two guys are a beast on the field.

First off i wasnt able to make it out to the game so i couldnt see the scrimmage so i need all my real jag fans to let me know how we look. This was only a scrimmage to evaluate what is working and what is not. Even with all the talent Stephenson has i knew we wouldnt just blow somebody out in a scrimmage game regardless if it was Tucker or not. I hear the defense played good! With a new and young QB the defense may have to carry us a minute..but the time is now for this staff to make the neccessary changes! We have some really good recievers and TE with Joshua Parris. At some point and I perfer NOW we have to have somebody behind center that can throw the ball and make a play! Not to call out anyones kid, but if he is not working out at QB for gods sake Gartrell do what you have to and find us a QB!! As a matter of fact, who is the starting QB? And what other candidates are there? Also what kind of night did Mike and TJ have rushing the ball? The coaches have to get it right! This may be Gartrells best team ever and I just refuse to watch this team go down the drain THIS season! Lets get it done jags!! Also, does anyone know if this game can be seen on ihigh or something? We have two weeks until Parkview, we should and will be ready!

If Stephenson players will just come to Tucker not only will they the newest and best looking school to go to class everyday but they will win championships and still get scholorships. Stephenson is just a bandwagon school that hasnt won nothing ever!!

Stephenson really needs to find a qb or switch to a different offense…. They looked very sluggish and the RB’s didn’t have much wiggle room… They have all of those HUGE linemen on the sidelines.. So instead of making 55 and 53 play both ways, they should find a way to get them guys on the field. #19 IS a forreal playmaker… They definitely need to find a way to get him the ball more. Defensively the only players I was impressed with was #12 and #22 and both of them transferred in from Parkview… They were all over the field making plays…. If the defense doesn’t get many stops it’s gonna be a long year for the Jaguar faithful..

I attended the Tucker-Stephenson scrimmage last night and seen alot of good things from both teams on defence. It was expected with both teams having good speed at most postions. Just curious to see how Tuckers QB progress throughout the season. Both teams should make deep runs into the playoffs, because if the other team don’t score, they can’t win!
