Georgia State beat out a Big Ten school for one of the state’s top defensive backs.

Chris Jones, a safety from Brooks County High School, said he committed to Georgia State over Illinois. He also had serious interest from Troy and UAB, among others.

“I felt like Georgia State was the best for me,” Jones told the AJC. “I’ve always loved Atlanta. It’s a great opportunity to play for a great coach in the big city of Atlanta and at the Georgia Dome. It’s close to home, I feel like I have a chance to start there, and play for my home state.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound Jones said he has a 2.8 GPA and plans to study Agricultural Engineering.

Thanks Michael! Playing time is a huge selling point to 2012 recruits as we will have several position battles beginning in Spring through July workouts.

Welcome to the Panther family Chris!

I’m really impressed by the recruiting thus far. Continue to build the program the right way and the sky is the limit. We definitely need more games with closer rival schools though.

Great news !!! I like it when an in-state HS player snubs the Big pre-Ten Conference to stay in state. Good luck ,Chris. Go Panthers and Blazers.

GA State should buy Morris Brown old stadium… The GA Dome is cool but the crowd will always look thin and the dome empty.

Chris is also a very good track performer as well. Posted a 10.68 in the 100 yard dash in 2010 in 1-AA Area Meet.

We are getting guys who can fly, can hit and love to play football.

This kid is legit as they come. What a steal for us and hard to believe he committed to us this early. You just don’t see kids with FBS offers commit to FCS programs in July so for a program that hasn’t even played its 2nd season of football, this is a major statement.

This is a great coup for the GSU football program……granted he signs in February of 2012.

The football program will probably take a step back this year as far as its on the field record but will be the better for it in the long term. Plus the program have gotten its indocrination to this offseason to the trial and tribulations of off the field issues by players (Drew Little,Kelton Hill, etc.)

If the program continues with it’s progress,I can see GSU as a FCS playoff team competing for national championships by 2013.

Wow, this is great news for our defense and a morale boost for the GSU community that we have guys wanting to come here and play for a baby team over the much bigger teams! It truly is a great time to be a panther.
