The recruiting version of the “Iron Bowl” will take place in Georgia soon.

Archrivals Auburn and Alabama are battling it out for St. Pius DB Geno Smith, who is considered by many to be Georgia’s No. 1 college football prospect at defensive back. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Smith will announce his college decision on August 17.

“I’m down to Auburn and Alabama,” Smith told the AJC. “Texas, Tennessee and Notre Dame are in there, too. But it’s really between Auburn and Alabama. I’m planning on deciding before school starts and that will be it.”

How do Alabama and Auburn compare? “In my opinion, they are both very similar. Coach Saban and Coach Chizik are both great defensive coaches. I enjoyed myself when I visited each school this summer. I really felt comfortable at both places. It’s going to be a really hard decision on where I want to go out of those two.”

Smith is one of the state’s leaders in early offers, racking up nearly 40 scholarships, including both UGA and Georgia Tech. He has remained one of the nation’s top-rated players at cornerback, despite maintaining a low profile since attending a prospect camp in early April.

“My senior year is very important to me,” Smith said. “I just want to be ready for it, and do whatever I can to help my team make it to the state championship game. I took some time away from recruiting and the camps. I did an early visit in the summer to Auburn, and went recently to Alabama. That was enough for me because I knew in my heart that it would come down to those two schools in the end.”

The state’s fastest football recruit” or Carrollton sprinter Jonathan Jones (undecided) and Creekside’s Josh Holsey (committed to Auburn) are also candidates to be Georgia’s No. 1 DB. Geno Smith and Holsey are close friends, with Holsey trying to recruit Smith to play with him in Auburn’s secondary.

@ TampaGator – did Spurrier take the SCU job as his first SEC gig? When he went to SCU did he say that was the only job he ever wanted and the only job he would have even considered? No. When Spurrier came to Florida he was coming to his alma mater and he made it clear that beating his schools traditional rivals was his main goal as a head coach. Spurrier came to Florida first and won a freaking national championship. Of course he is revered by Florida fans to this day. The UF/UGA rivavlry has become a sticking point for UGA fans because the rivalry has flipped in the last 20 years. UF has owned UGA over that time frame and I would contend that began in part because of Spurrier, but it also didn’t help that a team leader like Muschamp is now confessing that while UGA fans and alumni were cheering for him and paying his way to a better life he was secretly a Gator.

MikeP,

How about we start the morning with an inspirational quote: “It’s not over. When it’s over, we’ll let you know.”

Game Day is getting close and then there will be a lot of new blog names and a lot of revised predictions. I am not looking for UGA to win the BCS NC this year and I don’t think any serious DAWG fan is either. Given, the amount of new folks suting it up for UGA, the SEC East would be exceeding expectations, but it is obtainable. It is going to be a good year for the DAWGS, but it will be a year for the new DAWGS to get their feet good and wet. I feel that UGA will be a lot better than 6-7 this year, and I like how some teams may be discounting them from the get go. A dog fights hardest when it is cornered.

Geno Smith will have his hands full on August 12 when they scrimmage Gainesville High Schol. They feature one of the states top quarterbacks, sophomore Deshaun Watson (Clemson offer) and new on the scene WR Caleb Hayman 6′2″ – 195 – 4.55/ 40 with great hands and a host of speedy receivers. This should be a good test for Gainesville before they go up against Buford the first game of the year August 26 with Virginia commit (DB) C.J. Moore.

Bama Don says “Remember HBO”. You mean the same HBO that admitted they had zero proof? Would that be the HBO that contacted over 130 former Auburn players to find three with an axe to grind against Auburn and one they had to promise $20,000 for his story? The story his own HS coach said was a total lie? That the HBO you want remembered? I’d think any bammer would want that one to disappear, particularly since it was a bammer booster in charge of programming the bogus thing. HBO is so embarrassed over that show that they have canceled the guy’s contract!

Bammer has been on probation for 17 of the past 20 years. They will come off next June, unless the mess with the T-town menswear dude gets them another five. And yes, the Tuskaloser bookstore issuing free books to athletes that turned around and sold the books for a profit is something of a major issue. Y’all got off light on that deal.

I read this article concerning the mens wear story at Alabama yesterday. Any of you guys know, if this reporter is a legitimate one, or is he a hacker or homer? He seems convinced that NCAA rules were violated. I don’t even try to understand the convuluted rules the NCAA has anymore.

Just from looking at the picture accompanying this article, the WR pictured looks like the athlete, and the DB looks like he needs a little more time in the weight room. I hope he can tackle well and defend well. SEC is big time football, so he might need to muscle up a bit. Bet he runs like a race horse though.
