TE Kurt Freitag will decide between Alabama, FSU, Florida and Miami

Prediction for Freitag

Kurt Freitag, one of the state’s top college football prospects at tight end, announced his four finalists.

Freitag will pick between Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Miami. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder plays for Buford, the four-time defending Georgia Class AA state champion.

Freitag will announce his college decision after one of the biggest “border war” high school football games of the season. On Sept. 10, Buford will play against Yulee, Fla., which features tailback Derrick Henry, who committed to UGA at Dawg Night. Henry is a candidate to be the Florida’s No. 1 prospect for 2013 (Georgia’s No. 1 for 2013 is Grayson defensive end Robert Nkemdiche in a landslide).

Back to Freitag: He’s one of around 10 seniors from Buford projected to sign with major colleges. The group also includes two players who are a candidates to be the best at their respective football positions — linebacker Dillon Lee (committed to Alabama) and offensive tackle Vadal Alexander (LSU, Alabama and Auburn are leaders). Alexander told the AJC on Saturday that he will likely wait until the middle of his senior season or after it to announce his college choice.

Here’s a list of Buford’s 2012 prospects (click on name to read about them):

I don’t ever recall so many top prospects committing to schools this early. It will be interesting to see how many follow through with their choices.

And Booford says they do not recruit. They just coach them up! Right!. When will the GHSA grow a sack and force this team to play up. They continuously pump out D1 recruits but control their numbers to stay down in the bush leagues. Come on up to AAAAA boys where all the other public schools in Gwinnett play. It is a farce that the GHSa allows those posers to remain in the smaller classification when they can acquire more talent than most of all GA high schools other than Stephenson.

It is funny because most of their fans really believe they have superior coaching and support. Give me a break, if Simpson loses a game with the HUGE advantages he has, he should be canned on the spot. It is the Yankees with their payroll versus AAA minor league baseball. Just aint fair and these buffoons keep beating their chests and patting themselves on the back. Ol Raph and the rest of the Nancies in Thomaston have sold their soul to the devil in Green.

I bought a college football mag yesterday and it has our incoming recruiting class listed as 6th best, behind Auburn and LSU in the SEC. If it’s only 6th best and some dont qualify academically, how is that a Dream Team?

It’s statistically likely that all these big fast kids live in one small little school district and they somehow never move even 1 mile out of the district. You are right about the hick fans, they act like they’re gods chosen, I guess they can’t read their own test scores.

good luck to the young man.

Michael, is the AJC planning a pre-season recruiting list? Georgia has so many good kids that it would be educational to read some sort of hierarchy. And it might add needed context to the endless debate on whether or not an unusually large number of top kids are leaving the state.

Put another way, if UGA didn’t go after X, Y or Z, what Georgia kids are they after?

we are gonna have to go national to fill out this class with OL. The 3 or 4 best are going elsewhere. We need 5 more. Where from, who knows….or we’ll sign all second tier “projects”.

Quit worrying about UGA recruiting. We will get the players we need at the positions we need to fill. Georgia isn’t the only state in the country with good athletes. Sure, it would be nice if all of UGA’s needs were filled by Georgia kids, but that is not going to happen, when all of the other schools in the SEC and other places are vying for these kids as well. Perhaps if the press wasn’t always turning out articles about hot seat this, secondary violation, class 1 that, it might help a little bit. I don’t expect that to happen though, so the folks at UGA will just have to do it on the field and then the news media will have to come up with something else to disparage UGA.
One thing I always find comical, has to do with the negative bloggers on a lot of these articles. If UGA is really so bad, and a loser and all the negative crap I see posted, why are so many of these morons, devoting so much time to making these idiotic comments about UGA. When you devote so much time to putting down everything UGA, it shows me that you are 1. Jealous of UGA, 2. are ashamed of your own team, 3. are worried that UGA is going to hand your team it’s lunch when they meet, or as is probably the reason in most of these cases, you know very little about football.

July 31st, 2011

The Dawgs will be just fine in recruiting. One of the last things they need now is another tight end. We have 16 scholarship o linemen on the roster now. Most of the studs don’t want to step into that fickle. Fact is Alabama, Florida, Auburn, and South Carolina all need more help there than we do. All we need right now is 4 LB, 3 DL, 3 OL, 3 CB, 2 Safeties, 1 FB, and 1 RB in this class. That’s not that hard to achieve, regardless of this season’s results (to a degree) or who is coaching at season’s end (either Richt or an upgrade). The defensive back situation has me more worried.

July 31st, 2011
9:38 am

Besides, by the time these kids are face with the possibility of “grey shirting” as currently practiced by just about every SEC school, minds will change. Just let the season play out. UGA just needs to “trust” the players they already have and coach them up properly.

On the topic of the Yulee vs. Buford game: Yulee is a true small school and it’s team and players will reflect that. With Buford bringing in top talent from around north Georgia, they will win the game handily, and probably shut down Derrick Henry. One great player cannot compete against a great team, and Yulee will not have the supporting cast to give Derrick a fair shot.

Mark this down however: Henry will be the #1 player in the country as a recruit, and will be a dominant college back. He is the real deal. So before you call him “over-rated” and claim that Buford’s guys are better just because they will win the game, consider what he’s up against. One vs eleven aren’t good odds for anyone

Poor little Yulee; i’m sure they’ll manage to find 10 more players to suit up. If they didn’t think they could play with Buford, why schedule the game? Put the crying towel away. I’m not a Buford fan, but who wouldn’t want to play for such a great program? Do folks think that all of a sudden somebody waved a magic wand and these outstanding programs were created in thin air? City schools have their advantages, but i know some that r not very good.

ORabidOne….what is the big deal about recruiting to play at a high school. My HS recruited me and my elementary school payed 75% of my tuition for 4 years. You go where you can afford and whomever gives you the best education. Is that not the American way? It was where I grew up and nobody complained!

Concrete Pete,
Henry hasn’t signed with UGA yet. UF is still working hard to get him to Gainesville. He told the UF staff at FNL that he hasn’t closed the door completely. Still have a long time to go for all these kids before NSD.

And back to Buford-Yulee, I liken this game to the year Neese (Tebow) came to play Hoover. Neese was a small school, and could not match up with the juggernaut Hoover squad. They shut down Tebow, and the cries of “over-rated” rang out. Uhm… Yea… We know how that turned out.

Uga already has a commitment from Ty Smith a TE that committed early in the season. Plus last season they signed Ray Rome (anybody remember him?) not including the fact that there is a log jam at that position so please stop sweating UGA about Tight Ends it is not a position of concern. Now it you want to talk about Oline or, Dback. Then we could talk

July 31st, 2011

His commitment along with team mate Dillon Lee would probably help with landing Vadal Alexander.

Next year will be a banner year recruiting for UA in the state of Georgia. Bama has a very good shot at sweeping the top 3 in the state.

Loganville, Ga DL Robert Nkemdiche (Bama lean)
Lagrange, GA LB Reuben Foster (Bama commit)
Newnan defensive back Tray Matthews (UGA/Bama) – will depend on the season the two schools have.

Boise in ATL

So many great options for D1 players in the south. Hate to say this – If I am a D1 prospect – had offers from FL. AU, AL, LSU and UGA – not so sure UGA is at the top of the list as UGA is medicore just in the southern region.

Programs go in cycles – and UGA’s stock is down,. I think UGA has bottomed out – and will have a better year this year.

This is a huge year for UGA to earn some regional respect – forget NATIONAL respect – UGA does not have regional respect as they are middle of the road team when compared to immediate surrounding peer schools.

Peer schools – defined as drawing a geographical circle around Athens of D1 schools:
Starting North and going clockwise:
Tennessee – UGA is better program
Clemson – tie
South Carolina – Gamecocks better
GT – UGA better program
Florida – Gators better
FSU – Seminoles better
Auburn – AU better as they won a NT – UGA should beat them this year
Alabama – Tide is far better
Vandy – UGA is better

So drawing a circle around UGA – huge names of schools – how does UGA stack up against these peer D1 schools.

4 that UGA is better
5 are better than UGA
1 tie (Clemson)

I really like Richt – but there is a difference in a rebuild year and what the heck has happened in Athens.

Huge year for this program – If Richt wins 8 games – by all means bring him back. If UGA goes 7-5 – really need to make a change.

UGA gets incredible fan and alumni support – has just incredible stadium and facilities – in a talent rich state – NO WAY UGA should get beat by Colorado or UCF.

After that UCF game – Richt is lucky to have a job. that was pathetic.

@ Nash Plus last season they signed Ray Rome (anybody remember him?)

uh no nash I don’t, I rember a Jay Rome. lol. just kidding, agree 100% we need scholly’s for linemen we’re ok on TE’s

@ Concrete Pete I would bet Robert Nkemdiche will be the number one recruit in the nation in 2013. Henry might be the number one running back, not recruit.

July 31st, 2011
5:48 pm

How do you really rate high school kids and say this one is the best in the nation?!?!?! You can’t. Plus you never know what your getting from any recruit no matter the ranking the player has by these recruiting sites.

July 31st, 2011
5:57 pm

On the topic, I believe he will commit to Bama. He’s a blocking TE and Saban knows how to use these guys plus they are winning. Winning brings in the recruits.

July 31st, 2011
6:07 pm

A lot of changes have happened in Athens since last year. The biggest will be the leadership and the older players finally taking charge. Attitude will be much better. It will be very interesting how far this new atmosphere will take us. A lot of people don’t think UGA will be great again until 2012 but depending on how fast the new freshmen can learn their assignments and the play book will depend on whether we will have a special year , this year.
I think the defense will be night and day better and will look a lot like the old great defenses of the past.Also. I think our special teams will be one of the best in the nation. Our kickers will be a Huge asset and will be the difference in coasting to some wins and winning a few close ones.
A lot of questions will be answered in the first two games.
