QB Nathan Schuster gets first offer from Georgia State and commits

After Georgia State’s ridiculous amount of attrition at QB during the offseason, there may be no greater position need on the recruiting board.

Georgia State landed a top QB target with the commitment of Nathan Schuster from Chattooga High School.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder decided to commit to Georgia State, which was his first offer. He also was a scholarship candidate at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Jacksonville State, The Citadel and VMI. At the position of defensive back, Schuster was drawing interest from  Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Vanderbilt, among others.

“Georgia State was recruiting Nathan to play QB, and that was a deciding factor,” Chattooga coach Brad Waggoner told the AJC.  “Georgia State is getting a strong leader and an extremely hard worker. He’s the hardest-working kid in our program. He’s a great student (with a 3.8 GPA) and a grew up a coach’s son. He’s everything you want at the QB position — just a winner.”

Schuster will be a third-year starter at QB, racking up more than 1,700 all-purpose yards last year as a junior.

Georgia State’s QB of the future has had to overcome some tragedy at an early age in his life. His father was a longtime assistant at several schools, including Dacula and Fitzgerald, and accepted a job as Chattooga’s offensive coordinator around four years ago. Shortly after the father and son moved to the Chattooga area, the father was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and died about a month later. Shuster was adopted by a local family.

Welcome to the Panther family Nathan! We have 3 offensive line commits, a WR and a RB.

Dream Team? Nope, that’s a lame excuse for a recruiting group. We just call them more members of a daily growing Panther Nation.

Thanks for the pub Michael!

Sure wish the AJC would come up with a way to differentiate between Georgia State and Georgia Southern. When I saw the headline(and others) I thought it was GA Southern, otherwise would not have even read it. The AJC has to realize it has online readers all over the state, not just the Atlanta area. Also, the last survey I saw says there are way more Eagle fans in the state than Ga State fans. I sometimes think the AJC is doing it intentionally.

Man don’t even worry about that the AJC rarely reports on anything GA Southern does. The only time they do is when we do something bad or loose out a recruit to another school. But you guys are lucky to have someone dedicated to recruiting at your school just to keep the fan base informed. Most of us at GA Southern are always in the dark. The info we get comes from rivals and scout and if you look at both of them we are recruiting about 100 kids and only offered about 20.

We do have some insiders with the scoop on the real recruiting but there not telling.

For someone who supports a school, no matter what color, religion, race or creed, it makes no sense to disclude any player. On previous posts I gave you the Dekalb Co school alum that are already on the Panthers roster.

Feel free to look for yourself at http://www.georgiastatesports.com.

If you believe you have someone the coaching staff should look at the coaches email addresses are listed on that site as well. I believe the Jaguars have no issue getting coaching staffs from around the Southeast to evaluate their pro efts.

@StephensonSupporter. Maybe you should ask coach Pugh why he’s not recruiting the kids you think he should? I doubt he would agree that he is discriminating against his own. Better yet, maybe you should just file a lawsuit. Good luck with that.

[...] Obviously, the QB position is a priority for Georgia State’s 2012 football recruiting class. GSU has already landed one with the commitment of Chattooga HS QB Nathan Schuster, who was getting looks at ACC and SEC schools as a defensive back but has his heart set on QB (click on story link) [...]

Stephenson and ML high both enjoy pretty good reputations as high schools, so if Ga State is not recruiting at those schools it is probably because there are no coaching relationships or that they have other players that meet other needs at other schools – not because of some racial conspiracy. Good grief, get over your color.

The point Stephenson supporter is making is that you have about 5 top kids at the QB position in the metro area, and from what i understand not so much as a call from Ga St. not saying its racial, and I dont agree that the point should have been made, since this is a positive story about a HS kid…Just makes you wonder at times.

To MLK parent, there are several kids form dekalb and metro area on the team. The starting safety played at Glenwood Hills.

Also we have to be mindful that these blogs are to celebrate that childs accomplishment, not to be a forum for who is the better player, staffs, schools, etc.

They DO do it intentionally/ Please remember that except for CT, the AJC does not employ sportswriters, only a bunch of idiots who like to create controversies.

Nathan is such a great young man. His character is superb and he is a natural athlete and leader. The Northwest Georgia Fellowship of Christian Athletes has named their top award of character each year in honor of Nathan. You don’t hear of that often. It is called the Nathan Shuster Award and of course he was the original recipient. That should tell you something about this young man. Congrats to Nathan and to GSU for getting him. You won’t be sorry.
