Joe Harris, who is considered by some to be Georgia’s top college football prospect on the offensive line, will pick between UGA, Clemson, South Carolina and Mississippi State on Wednesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder from Lithonia High School named his four finalists out of 13 early scholarship offers. He will announce around 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday at a school function.

“I want to go to the university where I can see myself being the biggest success at as a football player, along with having a big impact on the team and helping them win,” Harris told the AJC on Tuesday night.

Harris on his four finalists:

  • UGA: “It would be a good place to be for all four years. They play in the SEC, which is the best conference in college football.”
  • South Carolina: “It’s a great place. They have a lot of young, talented and really skilled players. They’ve got Marcus Lattimore at RB, Alshon Jeffrey at WR, and Stephen Garcia at QB. It’s a good place to play. They need offensive linemen and I’d have a big role on the line if I go there.”
  • Lithonia OT Joe Haris (right) will announce between UGA, Clemson, South Carolina and Mississippi State, while teammate LB-DE David Johnson is a 2013 prospect with several early offers (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)

  • Clemson: “They are my childhood favorite. That’s the school I grew up following. Every time I go there, they have shown me a lot of nice. It’s nice up there.”
  • Mississippi State: “Being from Georgia, I don’t know much about them as I would like. I like the offensive they run.”

Harris said he toured South Carolina and Clemson in June, and last saw UGA at Nike camp in April. He has never visited Mississippi State. He or Buford’s Vadal Alexander have flipped-flopped as Georgia’s No. 1-rated offensive lineman. Alexander has LSU, Alabama and Auburn as his leaders.

Check back at ajc.com between 4:30-6 p.m. for Joe’s decision.

UPDATE: One of Georgia’s top basketball players has Duke, Memphis and Ohio State as his leaders. Tony Parker, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound forward from Miller Grove High School, is also talking with North Carolina and NCAA champion UConn (click on story link)

Sure would be nice to see Mr. Harris as a Dawg but I think South Carolina is the lean.

Just look at his comments…not hard to see he’s picking the gamecocks unfortunately. He’s literally detailing all the current players he likes there plus sees an immediate opportunity for playing time. He could barely find nice things to say about us and Miss State. The kid would make a terrible secret agent – makes it easy to read what he’s doing.

Plus, he hasn’t even VISITED Athens since April and didn’t attend “Dawg Night” either. I am fairly certain Richt is pursuing other, more likely OL choices at this point.

Joe goes to the Cocks and VA goes to Bama. But hopefully the dawgs will get Joe. Has V.Alexander ever listed GA as a school of interest?

Good luck young man. By the time you get to South Carolina, Garcia and Jeffrey will be gone.

UGA is on the upswing while Clemson and USC are on the downswing. UGA could use his talents.

@Bob Loblaw “UGA is on the upswing while Clemson and USC are on the downswing. UGA could use his talents.”

How can you say that –
USC just had their best year in like 25 years
UGA just had one of their worst years in a long time
Clemson did about normal, not great year, not real bad

Unless he starts as a true Freshman he won’t see much if any playing time along side the players he named at South Carolina. At UGA he comes in behind the Dream Team and will join a group in 2012 that has started out strong. Spurrier will turn 70 years old in Harris’ Senior year. How much longer will the man who loves his golf keep going? Going head to head against Spurrier that’s a question I would start posing to recruits.

Its expected he picks USC. And I don’t believe Alexander has ever listed UGA among his favorites. The one OL recruit that UGA has a legit shot with is Avery Young basically between him and UF. From most sites its a 50-50 with him. Then its JUCO time. I’m just hoping this isn’t a reflection on the OL coach Will Friend.

From his comments on each university, it does seem SC is his lean.

And with UGA already having two OL tackle commits in John Theus and Chester Brown, and Harris’ comments that his choice will be based on my chance for “biggest success at as a football player, along with having a big impact on the team and helping them win”, he’ll probably be a Gamecock.

Would be pleasantly surprised to see him pick UGA though. .. Go Dawgs!

Georgia has hurt themselves landing their typical alumni favorites Dabell, Dantzler, and Theus. Richt’s lack of forsiaght makes it sooo easy for the competition. Why would Joe come to Uga? Just to sit behind Dabeel, dantzler, and theus. And he will, even if he’s better. Bama has already picked up Brandon Greene, a 6′6′ 300 lb. Under Armour All-American out of Cedar Grove. Uga passed on JuWuan James last year, a 6′7″ 330 freshman All-American OT at Tennessee, from N. Gwinnett, in order to “set the table” for Theus. And now there’s speculation that Vadal Alexander may be headed to Bama as well! Richt/Bobo are crazy.

@ Tide Roll,

Do a little research before you say our HC plays favorites. One problem mentioned by UGAs players about their former Offensive Line coach Searels is he did play his favorites, one of the reasons Anderson moved to Defense. Now with a new, fair O line coach Anderson is the starting Right Tackle.

So you know for a fact that if Harris went to UGA he would sit behind the other linemen? Why because he is black and they are white?

You really need to shutup with your agenda. You are pitiful and a sorry excuse for a human being if you truly believe the crap you type.

Richt would let Harris compete for a job and if he is as good as you say he is, he would beat out the white “legacy” boys.

Max Jean Gilles just called me by the way, and he wants your number and your address. He and DJ Shockley are going to come by and discuss your agenda in person with you and why it might have a few flaws in it.

I see Tide “Racist Roll” is back at his racist ways. He racist!! UGA offered JuWan James, he was set to go to Tennessee from the get go. Not sure why Joe Harris listed any other schools than South Carolina. This battle is between South Carolina and umm South Carolina. He’s from South Carolina and has family in Columbia.

Your just like all the other racists (Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Charlie Rangel) when asked a question about comments that makes you look bad you deflect and throw shots at the other person.

So Mr. Tide Roll, when are you going to let everyone know what NFL team your a coach for, why didn’t the “Racist” Saban recruit Cam Newton out of Blinn JC?

I doubt you’ll answer these questions because numerous people have asked you them and all you do is deflect and run away.

Mr. Carvell! I find this interesting. “While Adams is headed to Georgia Tech, the state’s top two OL prospects appear headed out of state. Lithonia’s Joe Harris will announce between South Carolina, Clemson, Mississippi State and Alabama on July 27″ This was written just last week and not mention of him having UGA in there. So in the past week did Joe Harris add UGA to his list or did you add them knowing he was not going to pick UGA so you could lead your anit UGA agenda?

It’s not like that two-headed monster, RICHT/BOOBOO haven’t set a precedent. They continuously feed the very teams they need to beat to keep their jobs with talent the caliber of LITHONIA’S JOE HARRIS. Last year, JAMES CARPENTER from HEPZIBAH, was named All-American at Offensive Tackle for Alabama, and selected in the 1st round of the NFL draft. This year CHANCE WARMACK, from WESTLAKE HIGH, who played beside CARPENTER on Bama’s National Title Team, was named pre-season All-SEC, along with S. Carolina’s massive Offensive Guard, ROKEVIOUS WATKINS, from CREEKSIDE HIGH, who literally pushed UGA all over the field in S. Carolina’s decisive win over UGA. There’s more!. A. J. HAWKINS, from Atlanta’a MLK HIGH was named to the Rimington Watch list, AS A JUNIOR, at Ole Miss, for the outstanding center in College football. Now the Richt/Bobo braintrust is at it again with JOE HARRIS, VADAL ALEXANDER, and BRANDON GREENE. Unbelievable.

A childhood Clemson fan goes to South Carolina ?

Garcia and Jefferies are going pro after this season. (Well Garcia will not be going pro but will be out of eligibility.) Lattimore will go pro after his junior year. I think the kid is bright enough to realize that.

I can’t lastine Spurrier lasting another 4 years either. The man is 66 years old. As soon and the Gamecock ship hits a little turbulance Spurrier will retire and call it a career. He just wants one last hoo-rah.

Yes, the Dawgs lose a lot of players to out of state teams just by the numbers game, i.e, so many players and so few scholarships….What drives me crazy is which ones are leaving. Now, we get our share of the top 25 players in this state every year, but think if the 5 or 6 REALLY special players that leave EVERY year ended up in Athens!. Over a 4 year span, that would be 15-20 more really blue chip players on that roster. A real difference maker if you ask me………….Nobody’s asking!

Both within 30 minutes. Unbelievable. In the meantime, Rival’s preseason evaluation of UGA shows your offensive line depth chart as having some kid named Hugh Williams backing up Cordy Glenn. Ben Reynolds, 6′2″ 250lb., backing up Jones at center, and Dallas Lee (missed Spring-Asthma like symptoms), and Austin Long (Missed Spring Back Surgery) as backing up Anderson and Burnette. YOU HAVE NO DEPTH, AND YOU REFUSED TO RECRUIT THE TYPE OF ATHLETE THAT WOULD HAVE ALLEVIATED THE PROBLEM! HOW COULD RICHT/BOOBOO NOT SEE THIS COMING? ANYONE WITH A BRAIN COULD! Choose carefully Joe! Not even Spurrier can maintain Carolina’s limited success the next 4 years. True UGA had a bad last few years but it’s an abberation . . . just like the Cocks getting to the SEC championship game last season. Don’t be fooled by illusions. Plus whatever Carolina can offer you in potential playing time, Georgia can equal if not better. I would love to see you in red and black. But good luck whoever you choose.
