Mark Fox turned around his luck with recruiting at Milton High School by landing the state's No. 1 PG for 2012 (AJC photo)
Charles Mann, who is considered state’s No. 1 college basketball prospect at point guard, committed to UGA over Florida State on Friday.
“The most important thing about UGA is that it’s close to home, so my friends and family can watch me play,” Mann told the AJC. “It was down to Georgia and Florida State. Georgia has two point guards leaving after this season, giving me a great chance to come in and start. I’ve built a great relationship with the coaches, and I felt like Georgia was the best place for me.”
The 6-foot-5, 193-pound Mann picked UGA out of 24 offers, which also included reigning NCAA champion UConn. Mann averaged 22 points as a junior at Union Grove High School. This summer, he transferred to Milton High School for his senior year.
“I think there were a lot of factors, one of them being the great opportunity to step in there and have a chance to start as a freshman,” Milton coach David Boyd said. “He’s got an outstanding wing in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. There are some ‘bigs’ already there. He also wanted to stay close to home, so his family could see him play. He also wants a chance to play at the highest level, and Coach [Mark Fox] has a good record of getting guys to the NBA.”
It ended a streak of bad luck for Fox at Milton High School. Two of the team’s top seniors from this past season’s team, power forward Julian Royal (signed with Georgia Tech) and swingman Dai-Jon Parker (Vanderbilt), had Georgia among their finalists. However, the biggest blow might’ve been the commitment of rising senior Evan Nolte to Virginia over UGA. Nolte’s older brother, Connor Nolte, plays for Fox at UGA. Nolte and Mann will play together in Milton’s backcourt this season.
“Coach Fox spoke at our banquet this spring, and it was right after Evan Nolte committed to Virginia,” Boyd said. “I told Coach Fox ‘I bet you get a Milton player coming up.’ I didn’t have any particular player in mind. But I felt like it was going to happen and it did with Charles.”

There must be something going on which these kids know thats attracting them to Milton. It seems like they treating high school like college the way these kids keep transferring to that school. I know somebody gonna look into if these kids are actually moving into that school district.

Are we really having this debate. Just like we can’t touch your conference argument in football, you can’t touch ours in basketball. Look at the record of the past 25 years. Everyone home team has won in the series between us except for us last year and 2 years when UGA wasn’t using a real stadium. That being said posterity has to come down to conferences and we take you every year (with the exception of Kentucky) And we lost to K-State once, how many times have you guys lost to Mercer???

CMF is apparently a good coach and a good recruiter. He comes to the state of Georgia from out west and is beginning to at least get in the homes of some of these kids. Good stuff. He has recruited some kids that we likely would have missed out on, pre CMF.
Over the next 2,3 or 5 years, UGA fans hope to see an exciting and very competitive BB team with anyone that we play. IF we can always be in the hunt for the East in the SEC, then go to the SEC Tourney and win one or two or three, then go to The Dance, then we will have achieved our goals.
If CMF can really get them to take off and become a factor, then within 3 or 5 years, I could envision UGA dropping some LARGE $$ on a new state of the art BB facility. The Lady Dogs would also greatly benefit from that. Maybe state HS tourney could be held there too.
Good luck CMF and keep up the good work and welcome aboard, young man !!

Wow, this comment section turned negative quickly. To be clear, the headline is a little misleading, as my initial thought was the state’s top player committed, not the top PG. Mann seems like a great player, and should contribute immediately. To the UGA fans, congrats. You got a good player on campus. However, don’t get too excited and start proclaiming UGA as a top team. ACC Basketball > SEC Basketball, GT Basketball > UGA Basketball. Win a tournament game and maybe, UGA will get some national recognition. And to my good, delusional friend HewittFan, I was waiting on a prediction of yours to come true. It hasn’t happened yet. If you need a reminder… “I know a another big secret that will come out next week also, it involves another Gt player…One of his former teamates play for the GREAT ATLANTA CELTICS and it has been confirmed” Please note, this was posted right after the Brian Oliver transfer announcement. How long ago was that? Do us all a favor and go crawl back under your rock.

Thanks, who gives a _______. SEC is where the power is. Basketball is an afterthought to us, and we’re still right on the heels of the ACC. Check the national titles for the two conferences over the last half-century. Think it’s 7-5. UGA has been better than Tech over the the last 10 years. It is what it is. We’re the power conference, and it’s only going to get worse for the lowly A she she moving forward.

A hearty congratulations to all Dawg basketball fans and to Coach Fox and the team itself.
GT fan here. I sure hope Gregory can land a few quality players. He has taken over a decimated program (thanks Hewitt). I think he has about 7 guards (three of them walkons) and just 4 front court players for this year. Going to be tough sledding, especially in games that the bigs get in foul trouble. We might see 4 guards on the floor on many occasions.
UGA basketball is looking up under Coach Fox. UGA seems to find a way to win the games between GT and UGA, even when it seemed GT had better team. I give Hewitt a lot of (dis)credit for those results. What an awful coach. So glad he’s gone. I will be happy rooting for the team this year, even if they can’t win 10 games (might not). If Gregory manages to present a disciplined team and we the fans can make heads and tails out of what they are trying to do (couldn’t ever see any rhyme, reason or intelligence to the play under Hewitt), then we’ll gladly support them through even the ugliest of 20 point losses.
Again, good job by Coach Fox in getting a top GA high school player. I hope it rubs off on Gregory and GT. Anything is better than Hewitt though, of that I am and have been (for years) convinced. A dark cloud has lifted.

Milton can have a lot of these kids transfer and not move to the district because we have an inner city program at Milton. Some of these kids have to get up at 4AM every morning to catch the bus from the inner city to Milton. This has been in place for over 15 years, so nobody thinks it was put in place to recruit. When i went there we sucked at everything except baseball (AKA Dexter Fowler). Now that the horrible Van Keys experiment is gone people actually want to play basketball. Odd isnt it. You fire a guy who lets his son play on varsity as freshman (just to get a lettermans jacket to impress people, but never played a minute) and suddenly people want to paly for you. Get rid of the Large Mouth Bass running the school and maybe we could be good at football finally!
And anyone posting that boyd cheats, find the link and post it or youre clearly just making crap up bc Tech sucks at all sports. Milton will eventually turn into a feeder program for UGA now that Mark Fox is here. I talked to connor last week and he is still working his brother over to change his mind as well as a few other players at milton (cough cough Royal recontemplating being a Techie with all this violation talk hahahaha)

The inner city program works not just there but in other bad school districts. And like i said has been in place for 15 years. The middle school and elementary school that are right niext door also do it. And when your consistantly the best they usually check out your program in depth…. Wonder if nothing has been said yet about it if there is anything wrong with it??????? Get a life techies, sports just arent your thing. Maybe you could sell off your stadiums and equipment and make more room for classrooms!! since you guys are soooooo much smarter than us poor UGA folk. Heck apprently even though we recruit the same athletes they are illiterate morons at UGA but they would be stand out student athletes at tech! hahahaha what a crock.
5-6 years ago there was a tech player that got suspended for having a Grad Assistant take a test for him (offerred to all tech football and basketball players). He obviously got caught, but he went to Hewitt who gave him an option. You can either take the blame and only you suffer for a year, or you can put it on me and the whole program goes down for 4 years. Unfortunately he shouldered the blame. Had that gotten out GT would no longer have sports and would have closed their doors. should be 3 violations in 10 years.

et a life techies, sports just arent your thing. Maybe you could sell off your stadiums and equipment and make more room for classrooms!! since you guys are soooooo much smarter than us poor UGA folk. Heck apprently even though we recruit the same athletes they are illiterate morons at UGA but they would be stand out student athletes at tech!
