UGA’s Mark Richt gives ‘group hug’ after 4 commit together at Dawg Night (UPDATED)

Which 2012 UGA recruit are you most excited about?

Mark Richt has seen a lot in his 10 seasons as UGA’s football coach.

He’s never had a recruiting moment like Friday night.

Four players committed at the same time at UGA’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp (This was a “package deal” unlike any other … four players from four different high schools, from three different states).

John Theus, a 5-star offensive lineman from Jacksonville, and a trio of 2013 recruits — Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, WR-DB Tramel Terry of Goose Creek, S.C., and RB Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla. — all huddled around Richt and pledged at the same time (and a fifth one committed later in the night).

Four? Maybe four on the same day. Maybe. But four at the same time? What?

Ramsey explained how it went down:

He said Theus was one of the first people he saw after reporting to UGA on Friday. ”Theus talked to me, and whispered that he was going to probably commit that night. We were sitting in the lobby, and I said ‘I can’t complain about that.’ Georgia has always been where I want to go. I told Theus ‘If you will commit, I will.’”

That conversation triggered a chain reaction for later in the evening.

Two down, two to go.

Ramsey helped close the deal with the other two. One of his best buddies is Terry. They became fast friends on the recruiting circuit. They are so tight that Terry traveled from his family’s residence in the Charleston, S.C., area to Camden County this summer to train with Ramsey. “Tramel stayed at my house. I’m at camp right now at West Georgia, or he would be at my house right now. We work out together.”

Ramsey and Terry have always talked about playing college ball together. However, that plan was in jeopardy, according to Ramsey. “Tramel is a Georgia fan. But he was going to commit to South Carolina on Friday. He’s from there and lives there. I had to change his mind because I wanted him to play with me at Georgia.”

Ever the recruiter, Ramsey had also been working on Henry on behalf of Georgia. Henry lives across the state line, but only 15 minutes away from Ramsey. They hang out sometimes, too. “Derrick had Florida on top. I told him ‘let’s get it done and let’s make a Dream Team.’ Derrick really liked what he saw at Dawg Night.”

Once the camp began, the foursome kept chatting among and encouraging each other throughout the evening. “We all decided that we were going to talk Coach Richt after the workout.”

They did.

What was Richt’s reaction? “He was astounded that all four of us wanted to commit right then and there. It was on the field. All four of us walked up to him and said we wanted to be Bulldogs. Coach Richt smiled, his eyebrows lifted, and he all gave us big hugs.”

  • Note: UGA’s fifth commitment from Dawg Night was 2014 Apalachee High School RB Stanley Williams. He’s a rising sophomore in high school. Williams was both offered and accepted a UGA scholarship offer after being clocked in the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds, according to Scout.com’s Chad Simmons.

Theus is a stud. With Cordy Glenn leaving, pencil Theus in at left tackle for the next four years. This is great news to start the morning.

The kid from Appalachee is fast, no doubt, but his size is worrisome. Shadows of Tyson Browning and Carlton Thomas still linger. The offense never knew how to use Tyson, and Carlton has been hard to use as well. At least he still has two years to grow. Hopefully he will.

Michael – Quick question: with all of the “big name” 2012 in-state kids looking elsewhere, can you elaborate on what you percieve the UGA recruiting strategy to be for the next two years?

I love all of the signings @ Crowell, Isaih.. I have been saying the same thing for years. why not go to the midwest and steal one? Miami, USC, Florida, and Alabama have no problem doing that. How may o-linemen from the Midwest and Big 10 country are starting in the NFL? Countless

Another thing… Recruiting will only get better IF CMR does what he is supposed to do. This isn’t about BoBo or McClendon, it’s all about CMR and whatever adjustments he makes from week to week, game to game. Recruiting will take care of itself. Winning big and winning big right now is all that is acceptable

Mr. Carvell,

Will Georgia now have a few more scholarships to use for 2012, now that Ealey, King, Benedict, and a few others are no longer with the program. With all that has happened in the attrition department so far, I am not even sure how many scholarships UGA does have now? Can you give me a answer? It would be nice if we could get a couple of more of those big uglies on the OL.
Thank You

Cmr is on track to possibly land the #1 rb three yrs in a row (crowell, marshall(hopefully) and derrick henry) not bad for a coach who is supposed to be on the hot seat. Congrats cmr and staff. Now let the hate begin on 5,4,3,2…..

UGA was expected to sign 20 before the losses of TS, BB, WE, CK,. Yes they will be able to sign additional players to fill those spots. I also believe they get an additional scollie for the DT that wasn’t able to qualify this year, but I am not clear how long he will be at JUCO? Go dogs!

tech fan here. the news for us was embarrassing more than anything esle…but we didn’t lose any scholarships, no TV ban, no bowl ban…i don’t think it’s going to do us any long-term harm. losing scholarships would have been extremely damaging for my team…we’re not deep under the best of circumstances. congrats to the dogs on a great recruiting haul last night. i hope you are able to keep your guys healthy and out of trouble heading into the opener against boise state.

Thanks dawgman in Garor land,

I kind of thought they would but I wasn’t sure. This should help as the space is needed to get some big uglies still for the OL. People can say what they want, and they usually do in these blogs, but there is no denying, that young folks, like CMR and Bobo, and gravitate to them. Maybe, a good clean man, with a lot of heart, appeals to these folks and their parents.
