It’s time for ‘Dawg Night 2011′ — Who will be UGA’s next football commitment?

Predict how many UGA recruiting targets will commit at "Dawg Night"

Loading ... Loading ...
UGA will have its biggest recruiting event of the summer with the “Dawg Night” prospect camp on Friday.

Some of the top college football prospects from the state and the Southeast region are scheduled to participate or attend the camp.

UGA, which already has 10 commitments for its 2012 class, will be trying to add a couple of more over the weekend. Last year’s “Dawg Night” produced commitments from two offensive line prospects from Florida, Zach DeBell and Nathan Theus. At this year’s event, the most celebrated guest will be Theus’ older brother, John Theus, a 5-star OL recruit from Jacksonville, Fla. The younger Theus recently named Florida, UGA, and Texas as his finalists.

One of the top homegrown products expected to attend will be Harris County defensive end Jordan Jenkins. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Jenkins has been clocked at 4.53 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a vertical jump of 39.5 inches, can power clean nearly 400 pounds, and has around a 86-inch wingspan. He has narrowed down to six schools — Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, UGA, Florida and Tennessee.

Here are three questions with UGASports/Rivals.com’s Kipp Adams about Friday’s festivity:

Friday will likely be UGA's best shot at wooing Harris County DE Jordan Jenkins (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)

Friday will likely be UGA's best shot at wooing Harris County DE Jordan Jenkins (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)

1. What are realistic expectations for UGA from Dawg Night?

“The Dawg Night camp is designed to not only evaluate prospective student athletes for scholarship offers, but also to promote and sell their program to targets already high on their board. Since Georgia started it a few years ago, it has emerged as one of, if not the top summer prospect showcase in the entire country. Friday Night Lights may get the publicity as it was the one that started it all, but Dawg Night has grown to become right there in terms of talent. As far as expectations go, you can never predict what will happen in terms of commitments, but a few are possible. They have a good mix of 2012 and 2013 talent coming to Athens so they will try and find some new guys that can help them win games over the next couple of years.”

2. What is UGA’s biggest need right now for its 2012 class?

“There is no doubt that offensive line is the No. 1 need for the Bulldogs in 2012. They will have their top target on campus in 5-star offensive tackle John Theus, and he may or may not be close to making his decision. Georgia and Florida are seen as the frontrunners, with a possible visit to Texas looming in the coming weeks. One of the keys to UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 defense is having pass rushers at outside linebacker, and Jordan Jenkins and Kenderius Whitehead of Monroe Area are among the best in the Southeast. They are also lacking in defensive backs in this class, and will be evaluating a few prospects like Will Redmond of Memphis (Tenn) and Roshaun Milline of Baldwin High School.”

3. It will be a good “Dawg Night” if … ?

“It will be a good Dawg Night if they make a big push for elite linebackers (Jenkins, Whitehead, 2013 LB Reuben Foster of Troup County) , John Theus continues to connect with new UGA OL coach Will Friend, and they make a solid impression on the 2013 trio of Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, Yulee (Fla.) RB Derrick Henry, and Goose Creek (S.C.) WR/DB Tramel Terry. The three have become close friends, and will push for top prospect status in their respective states.”

John Theus is UF bound.

Jordan Jenkins will not committ Friday, he’ll be a later decision and still has visits to take.

Kenderius Whitehead still wants a second look at Bama and Auburn so he will not committ Friday.

UGA will likely grab a couple of “smaller” (if there is such a thing). The big names are going to be later decision near or after their senior campaign.

John Theus has been a UGA lock a while and might even be silent commit i just don’t believe people anymore who have the name insider UF going after DJ Humphries i would not count us out with Jenkins to get him to Athens for his 5th visit is a big deal .

Blake Tibbs of M. L. King is one to watch at Dawg Night… He has offers from a few SEC schools(Arkansas, Kentucky) and a few ACC schools(N. C. State, Wake Forest), but UGA is the offer that he’s waiting for. He has typical UGA receiver size 6′1″ 175 and speed(4.53 forty) and he produced some numbers last season(60 receptions for 1053 yards and 8 tds). Which is by far better than any receiver that’s returning in the state. He kinda reminds me of A.J. Green with his route running and hands and he even wears the #8. This is one guy the Dawg can’t let get away.

I was at a graduation Party with Nathan and John and John was wearing a Tarheel hat. Nathan’s girlfriend is a Gator fan and is going to Seminole CC in Gainesville and asked him where his Gator hat was and he said it was the only hat he didn’t have but if she would get him one he would wear it. He seemed real interested in a cheerleader that was going to be in Gainesville also. Hope this doesn’t sway him. He is a great kid as well as his brother Nathan and theior entire family.

I would not be surprised if Tibbs gets an offer because we have been slipping with couple guys and we have no chance at Chris Black but it appears we going after two 2013 WR’s Terry and Robinson .

RRT,

Jenkins will be there mostly for the camp part of it, not just for a 5th visit. It’s popular for all GA athletes.

The depth chart is against UGA with Jenkins.

I hear GT has a pretty decent shot with Jenkins as he could be an immediate impact there. Auburn as well.

Theus may go to UGA given their current depth at the OL, but UF isn’t going to give up on him in their backyard and he will NOT commit this weekend. He’s looking forward to the Texas visit as well. He’s got a lot of recruiting left.

Blake Tibbs is no AJ Green.

Come on now UGA fans, do not make the mistake of labeling every WR commit as the next AJ Green. Green was the best WR in the history of the program IMO and that’s over 100 years. Don’t make the “he’s the next Herschel Walker” label at the WR position too. 30 years and it still hasn’t applied to the RB position.

Theus will go to UGA because he has been promised the playing name of Zeus. Will not go to UF because they will use less lineman in their new 8 receiver set.

If we show Whitehead enough love, we get him. It will come down to UGA and Bama for Jenkins. Theus is going to wait till the end of August to commit.

I think it will be between Blake Tibbs and Jason Croom for the next UGA offer… They are pretty deep at the receiver spot and that position isn’t that much of a need…2013 will be loaded with Terry and Robinson…. theres a name that is rising on the radar in Georgia circles… Demarquis Polite of MLK is a name that is starting to generate interest for the class of 2013.

Tomorrow Chip will write an article breaking the news that Waldrop has chosen USC, but don’t get upset DOG fans!..We will land 3or 4 JUCO o lineman and Theus. If UGA has a good year, we will finish with Marshall,Theus,Clemons,Yuri Wright and Adkins…Next years in state class will be HUGE, and UGA is already way ahead for a number of big time players including Foster!

Both Natahn and John are just what Georgia needs. Nathan didn’t stay at the party long but John did and there is no arrogance about him, he sat with hid Mom and Dad most of the night and entertained the younger kids who were in awe with his size.

Don’t forget about 2013 RB T. Dye who the dawgs are high on we will be hitting the 13 class hard 12 class just was not that deep that’s one reason we have not put that much effort in this class we are saving are scholly’s for 13 .

Come on Football Insider

I didn’t say the kid was the THE NEXT AJ GREEN. I said he reminds me of AJ Green. The kid(Tibbs) is very polished and looks well groomed at the receiver position. AJ Green was from another planet and there won’t be another him, but Tibbs is close… trust me when I say this.

Not sure where the Dawgs are going to get these stud OL w/Walrop and Harris heading to SC…DJ,Young and Dunker will be Gators…maybe the kid out of Md or moving Watkins to OL..Theus is pretty much 95% to UGA unless Richt is fired or Trooper pays him a visit.

Carvell, what info do you have on 2013 prospect Jhonnie O’Neal from West Laurens High School. He is a linebabcker and has good size . Hes been offered by just about every one in the south Ive heard. Sporting News magazine had him as one of the top 35 players to watch for in 2013. Being from the same area and my wife taught him a few years ago , he is a great kid and good student. He has a good head on his shoulders.

I have heard that Whitehead is no longer at Monroe Area and right now is not at any school. Like I said about a month ago that there was problem with an assistant coach last year that is no longer at Monroe and is at a school in Dekalb and Whitehead is rumored to follow him to that school even though he still lives in Monroe, once again this just rumors.

@GrantParkGator a lot will depend on season with a lot of these recruits i agree that Waldrop is SC bound but i think we have much better shot at Harris and Young our scout and rivals sites been saying we have good shot at Young because we are so thin and he does have some family in Georgia .

RRT Young is going to happen for UF REAL soon….the chatter I’ve read had him flirting with UGA bc of his mother’s family realtionship with Coach Friend and his father shut that down and killed the visit to Dawgnite…just chatter atp. Once he commits it pretty much done bc his HSC doesn’t allow his kids to “play” the recruiting game after that.
