UGA ranks No. 2 in football recruiting for last 10 years by Rivals.com

How would you rate UGA's football success based on its recruiting success over the past 10 years?

This should make for an interesting message board discussion …

According to Rivals.com, which college has done the best job with football recruiting over the last 10 years?

That would be Southern Cal.

However, UGA is No. 2

According to the recruiting service, the Bulldogs have done the second-best job in the nation for the 2002-2011 cycle, with all 10 of those years under the direction of current UGA coach Mark Richt.

  • Interesting: While UGA has never won a mythical national championship in the Rivals.com rankings, the Bulldogs are the only school to finish with a top 10-ranked class in each of the last 10 years.

What about the “Dream Team?” That wasn’t even Georgia’s best recruiting class, according to Rivals. The real “Dream Team” was 2002, when UGA finished No. 3 overall in the nation. In case you are wondering, that year’s class had 31 recruits, led by 5-star LB Marquis Elmore. The better known players are DT Kedric Golston, TE Leonard Pope, WR Bryan McClendon (Georgia’s current RB coach) and last-minute addition Tim Jennings at DB.

Back to Richt: After taking over as UGA’s coach before the 2001 season, Richt has guided the Bulldogs to a 96-34 record in 10 years and two SEC championships. However, Georgia has struggled with a 14-12 record over the last two seasons.

Here are the two questions for discussion:

  1. How do you feel about Georgia’s recruiting over the last 10 years and the No. 2 ranking?
  2. How do you feel about Georgia’s success on the football field with its recruiting efforts over the last 10 years?

Its pretty obvious to me that over the last 4 or 5 years CMR and staff (CRG) have been recruiting the wrong type of players. Stars don’t mean anything except to the kid they are attached to. I would rather have a kid who wants to be at UGA and play his hardest than some hoodlum with 4 or 5 stars next to his name who thinks he’s entitled to be there and start between the hedges. The days of entitlement at UGA better be over. I know the last class may not have been ranked as high as the 2002 class, but based on the character of the kids I’ve seen so far, its just as good if not better.

Appears the staff in Athens is doing a fine job of turning 4- and 5-star recruits into cashiers at McDonalds. To paraphrase Steve Spurrier from a few years back, ‘… I don’t know what happens to all those top-notch recruits when they arrive in Athens …’.

And another 5 win season in Athens. How long can poor UGA survive this year with all the beatdowns?

At least with Choakdawg throwing krispy kreme`s at opposing backs running clear to the end zone it should be entertaining.

Never has so little been done with so much talent

I love Mark Richt but his time has passed. The answer sure isn’t Kirby Smart. He’s the most overrated assistant coach in college football.

Charlie Canter’s famous last words: “I never knowingly BROKE any recruiting RULES at the University of Georgia …. ”

I’m still bothered by that. Why did he say that? Nobody asked him any questions. He didn’t take them. This was Canter’s statement and I fear the beginning of a long NCAA investigation in Athens.

OK. Let’s compare

Under Richt:
#2 overall recruiting
2 SEC titles
96-34 record
1 losing season

Decade of the 1990’s

Recruiting ranking-??? Probably top 25 at best
ZERO SEC titles
72-43-1 record
2 losing seasons

Now we all know Richt is on the hotseat. But do we want to go back to before?

and to the Alabama idiots: Your football history from 1995-2007 is dark and dreary and filled with coaches getting fired and bowl wins being vacated and embarrassing losses to your little brother.

It happens to us all.

It’s funny how haters dwell on just this past season. Look at Mark Richt’s tenure. You don’t stay in the SEC very long if you keep having losing seasons unless your Vanderbilt. I think Richt is a great coach and one of the best in college football. He can lead us to a championship. He already has 2 SEC titles and has lead us to 3. How many can South Carolina fans say they’ve won in football?

Richt and UGA is also top-10 in winning % in all of college football over that same time period – even with a losing season last year. The conventional wisdom is that Richt squanders talent. But the reality is he does well with it. I will concede a slight underperformance, but nothing more. A losing season, though, is pretty inexcusable.

Rivals should do an analysis of their own recruit analysis. What % of athelets that they rank as 4-5 stars actually end up stars in their college careers. Ranking HS players is a crystal ball. Yes they hit on many, but overall….??

And during the 10 years that we ranked # 2 in recruiting, we finished in the top 10 – 5 times. Know all want that #1 ranking; it taks all the stars aligning to make it happen. Hope to see another in my lifetime.

@Saban, do you remember when Alabama was the laughing stock of the SEC? Oh yeah, that was 5 years ago. Where were you when you guys lost to Lousiana Lafayette, Dennis Franchione, Mike Shula, Numerous NCAA probations, and yet every 6 or 7 years you get off of probation and make fun of the rest of the SEC. I liken your school to a career criminal. You may be doing well now, but wait, these gray shirts, medical release, scholarship management, and you know that scam artist you call a coach will eventually leave. Especially when the powers that be get close to figuring out the football ponzi scheme he has been running. My point being, If Alabama is not the most corrupt football state in america then I dont know what is. You have Auburn, Alabama, North Alabama, and Jacksonville State. Look at all those programs. North Alabama has Tater tot running the show (SEC transfer hell), Jack State has taken perilloux, and now Ealey. It’s like a dumping ground! Enjoy your football freedom, you know your probation is likely to be violated within the next few years.

We all knew this. The state of Georgia is a breeding ground for great young athletes. The mutts get most of this great young talent, year after year. And, the NFL is full of UGA players.

So what happens between? Between the ears of Mark Richt, that is?

Sadly, it is coaching. Mark is a better man than he is coach. You can’t help but like the guy. Even “normal” Tech folks respect him, even after owning them. I like Mark, but he and his staff has way way too much talent to produce the results they have the last three years. I really don’t know what to expect this year. 6-6 or 10-2. Nobody really has a real feel. Most of my fellow Dawg friends off line tell me that we have too much talent in this state, too much money and a great college town and game day experience not to be in the Dome more often….and if you’re in the Dome, you’re in the NC hunt.

Wow — it shows that recruiting is an art, not a science. We’ve had a lot of underachieving, misbehaving players. But, we also had a lot of key career-ending injuries, a number on the offensive line. ALSO, playing in the SEC has made it TOUGH. Imagine the good UGA teams with David Greene, DJ Shockley and Stafford playing a Pac 10 schedule like USC did…! It was more like the Pac 2 most years. I believe the weaknesses on our coaching staff (offensive strategy and play-calling, the Martinez passive defense, etc.) have contributed to the results. We should have more to show for the past decade, IF this recruiting ranking has any validity. We seem to have failed in measuring the character of a lot of our recruits, though.

For the past 3 years, strength and conditioning had fallen behind other programs. While I believe we might have fixed the defensive side and the conditioning side, we still have the problem of inconsistent offensive game plans and inadequate play-calling. I don’t believe we can win a national championship with Coach Bobo calling the plays, unless our defense is a Top 5 defense some day. Watch championship teams carve up its opponents, and then watch how we attack our opponents. There’s a big difference……

Les

The article listed the last 10 years so the discussion followed in kind.

Haters are idiots, not realists. Haters are jealous losers who post on the UGA blog even though they have no affiliation with the school in any form as a fan, student, alumni or supporter.

Just drive by shooting venom spewers who believe they have something important to say when the reality is they make everyone dumber by having to read it.

It’s scary to think what UGA would do if their fan base would just not accept being a “nice program”. With the HS talent in the state, with no real other program in-state that takes recruits you want, UGA should be so much better. However, people make excuses for Richt and accept mediocrity. You think Richt survives last year if he were in Gainesville? 0% chance, UF expects more, and is the reason that coaches seem to cycle through after a few years.

Wait till next year...
