Buford High School linebacker Dillon Lee, who has committed to Alabama, proved that he is among the nation’s top athletes over the weekend.

Lee finished in the top 10 of the SPARQ Rating National Championship at “The Opening” — Nike’s new summer training competition that features some of the country’s top college football prospects. In the SPARQ contest, the rising high school seniors are tested in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, 20-yard shuttle, and throwing the power ball.

Lee led the entire field after two events, and ended up finishing 8th overall. In the preliminary round scores, Lee was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.66 seconds and had a 35.6-inch vertical jump.

Lee is the younger brother of UGA offensive lineman Dallas Lee, and committed to Alabama over Florida State and UGA (click on story link).

It’s always interesting to see how top-rated prospects perform at these type of combines, where accurate measurements are taken very seriously. Here’s a look at some of the Georgia contingency at The Opening:

  • Dillon Lee, LB, Buford HS, (committed to Alabama), 4.66 in 40, 35.6 in vertical
  • Mike Davis, RB, Stephenson HS, (committed to Florida), 4.62 in 40, 36.8 in vertical
  • Raphael Kirby, LB, Stephenson HS, (committed to Miami), 4.66 in 40, 38.7 in vertical
  • Kenyan Drake, RB, Hillgrove HS, (committed to Alabama), 4.52 in 40, 38.4 in vertical
  • Josh Holsey, DB, Creekside HS, (committed to Auburn), 4.48 in 40, 34.1 in vertical
  • CJ Curry, WR, Flowery Branch HS, (committed to UGA), 4.76 in 40, 31.6 in vertical
  • Quayvon Hicks, FB, Pierce County HS, (committed to UGA), 4.84 in 40, 29.6 in vertical
  • Markuss Eligwe, LB, Stone Mountain HS, (committed to FSU), 4.69 in 40, 32.1 in vertical
  • DJ White, DB, Union Grove HS, (committed to South Florida), 4.49 in 40, 35.2 in vertical
  • Kofi Amichia, OL, McEachern HS, (undecided), 5.01 in 40, 31.6 in vertical
  • Dakota Ball, DE, Pepperell HS (committed to Alabama), 5.25 in 40, 21.1 in vertical
  • Vadal Alexander, OL, Buford HS (LSU, Alabama and Auburn are leaders), 5.76 in 40, 21.6 in vertical
  • Joe Harris, OL, Lithonia HS, (undecided, Georgia Tech and UGA among offers), 5.3 in 40, 24.4 in vertical
  • Chaz Elder, DB, Banneker HS, (will pick between South Carolina, UGA and Vanderbilt), 4.77 in 40, no vertical listed

Dillon’s performance at NIKE is further proof of Mark Richt’s epic blunder with recruiting. Dillon Lee tests out at top 10 in the nation. He has always wanted to go to Georgia, his brother plays for Georgia, and his parents bleed Red and black. But Georgia was his 25th and final offer before committing???? That’s “asleep at the wheel” at its finest. What an insult to Dillon Lee. I hate it because Dillon is a stud and we need him at Georgia. I hope Richt and “Cheeseburger” Garner go after him again.

Dillon looked good and will be a very good player at Alabama in the future.
The Collins kid from LA who won the event is going to be a stud. RTR

Doesn’t take much analysis to see who ran the slowest and jumped the lowest of those listed. Perhaps Coach Richt has faired so poorly getting “athletes” and turning them into football players that he is just going to stop recruiting great athletes?

C.J. Curry runs a pedestrian 4.76 as a WR and gets an early offer. Dillion Lee was better in every aspect and the coaches sat around and waited too late.

That’s shocking about Dakota Ball. He’s already very short, maybe 6′0″. He’s also very, very slow at 5.25 in the forty. After Nick Saban sees that, I’m sure Bama will figure out a way to wiggle out of that commitment. Also, very surprised with the forty times of CJ Curry and Chaz Elder. That’s not fast enough for the SEC, plain and simple. Maybe they were all hurt?

Richt is still too nice ( or Christian ).. needs to expect more ( or Fire ).. Bo Bo and Garner.. neither up to Championship caliber coaches/recruiters…..

Every time there’s a combine or prospect camp that really prides itself on accuracy, I’m always surprised (both in both a good and bad way) with some of the heights, 40 times, etc. I’m surprised with some of the 40 times at Nike, both good and bad. You can figure them out by looking at them.

Richt is too nice (or Christian) ? Huh? That has nothing to do with it with his recruiting or coaching ability. Go back to sleep guys

From an outsiders prespective, UGA will finish strong regardless of what people think right now…UGA will land arguably the best RB in country in Keith Marshall from NC and add a couple of big uglies in FLA including their top player OT Theus…Plus they will gather the instate kids as well….It’s always been not a matter of how highly rated their kids come in, its what they do when they get to UGA..

DawgT, I agree that Dillon is a stud and I hate to see him going to a different school. (especially AL) But did you take into consideration that UGA is 4 deep at the linebacker position? We have 16 scholarship players at linebacker. There simply is not enough room. When We switched to the 3-4, that moved a lot of player from DE in the old system to LB, giving us the big numbers at the position. We simply have more glaring needs than at the LB position.

That 40 time on Curry doesn’t look too impressive for a WR. Every LB mentioned has a quicker time.

I hope hicks can either pick up some speed or be one heck of a blocker. Maybe he will improve this year. FB will be a need in the future if the offense is going to work.I think we will have the horses and speed at RB, but we need good blocking in the backfield in the future.
Agree with you there, hogmtndawg. Don’t know much about his size, but he isn’t very fast or at least wasn’t in these test. If he is the right size, maybe a TE in the future.

@ Hog…I was thinking the exact same thing for a 40 time of 4.76?? So Lee is faster than out heavily recruited WR??

Atltiger15 You are right its not how highly rated their kids come in its what they do when they get here. Thats why they had a 6-7 season record.

Surely Richt has another gimmick to get this year’s class? Which assistant is going get the blame for not getting Dillion? Has Richt ever took credit for anything except the wins? Bobo you are next. Couldn’t be the head coaches fault. Probably Saban’s fault, he is a real ass. How long do you think Alabama would put up with Nick Saban if he pulled those same gimmicks? I think they would run him out on a rail. No, Any questions now after the missing man formation? Oh yea, where is King and Ealey?
But Rich is the best Christian man!

A friend up in Buford who knows the Lee boy well says he is very bright, a good student, hard worker, and is the kind of kid who will NEVER get in trouble with the law – so clearly, Richt was correct is his assessment that the young man is not well suited for UGA football…

Stats are over rated. The “BIG” question is, can he play football. Alot of very fast guys have watch the game from the sidelines over the years. We need football players not track stars!

Next please…I agree with you…I would love to see UGA get Mullens from MSU once Richt and his staff get fired. They will lose to the Gamecocks — there is no doubt in my mind. Plus, I read in this mornings Charleston Paper that we lost out to another receive from SC who is going to USC. UGA doesn’t seem to have the same connections in SC that they used to have and USC and Clemson are beating us out for their top recruits.

July 11th, 2011
9:16 am

Everybody open your eyes here. UGA is OK at LB’s; it doesn’t matter if this kid was offered by UGA 1st or 25th, we need to be building the OL and RB positions right now. So get over the “brother thing and family thing bleeding red and black”, the entire family does not bleed red and black, if so Dillion had the chance to sign with UGA, but HE chose to go elsewhere. He will find out how long it will take him to get on the field. I’m more interested in building a complete all around team than “keeping it in the family” right now! Again, he had a chance, so get off CMR; if you want to get on somebody, get on CWG for not getting on the bus earlier. Good move by UGA in letting their recruiting “person” go a week ago, finger’s could be pointed at him also for not “doing his job”! But again, I stand firm in going after needed positions now instead of keeping brother’s together, apparently Dilion felt the same way, or either his brother isn’t really happy at UGA and advised him to keep his options open. There are many things to look at in recruiting in a school like this; so don’t blame CMR, look at CWG if you want, he is in change of putting his stamp of acceptance on recruits, not CMR! Defense is looking good, build offense up now.

Mr. SEC,

Got to agree with you. The offense needs some folks and the ones we do have, will have to grow up in a hurry. No way, you could account for the attrition that has taken place this off season. Ealey I could see, but I thought King had finally figured out what it takes and gotten some maturity. I was wrong about that. The Ol line is good for starters but we need to somehow work in some time for the back ups to get some game time experience. Hard to do that with the first two games though. I think we will be Ok at WR, since I don’t see the offense going for broke on every pass play, so our TE’s will be depended on a lot, while the WR’s get their feet under them. I hope our offense can control the clock somewhat and not go three and out a lot. Our defense should be able to control their end and dominate the line of scrimmage in a lot of cases. We just can’t expect them to be out there 45 minutes of each game.

I don’t think there should be any worry over Hicks’ 40-yard dash time. I think all UGA fans are happy with the jobs that Southerland and Chapas did as starters over the past years, and both ran 40’s that sat around 5. Speed is not an issue for fullbacks. Can he block and can he catch a few passes out of the backfield are the only things that matter.

July 11th, 2011
9:44 am

You are right that his speed is not a top consideration. I think though, for UGA to be successful, the FB has to be able to get out sometimes and be able to catch a pass, and then take off. You are right though, primarily, we need him to be able to block, so hopefully, he will be a bad man back there when he plays. We do need to return to a little smash mouth playing.

The biggest question mark in the entire article hasn’t even been mentioned yet. How is Chaz Elder going to be an elite CB or S with that kind of time? Greg Blue wasn’t fast but he could punish you. Elder is barely a buck-80, soaking wet.

Dillon cannot out run Curry on the field ! Some of you need to stop being silly about UGA football. They are getting recruits other schools want. You are looking for things to criticize Mark Richt and his recruiting. GA has a QB, TightEnd ,Receiver and DB nominated for preseason awards. The fact is had UGA got picked to play for title in 2008 BCS people would be looking at the program different. Texas had a worst season than Georgia. The NCAA unfairly took Ga’s hiesman candidate away for the first four games at the last minute. That move ruined the whole momentum of the season. Ohio State players got to play the whole season. Fla. Got picked to play in BCS game over Michigan when most people said Ohio State and Michigan were the two best teams that year. Alabama got a cheap win over Texas when Mc Coy got injured , because Texas drove right down the field on the first series. Just stating the facts you have to watch the games and not the score to understand footbal.
