Is Shaquille Johnson the best HS dunker EVER in Georgia?

Is YouTube celebrity Shaquille Johnson the best high school dunker in Georgia history? That’s what we want to know.

One popular YouTube video makes the claim that Johnson is the best in high school basketball. And they are talking about the USA, not just Georgia.

The 6-foot-4 senior at Milton High School is a rock star when it comes to dunking the basketball. Johnson committed to Auburn.

The jury is still out about how well Johnson can dribble in traffic or shoot from the outside (although his coach says he is vastly improved). But we know a few things. He can elevate. And he can dunk. In fact, last summer, we brought up how Shaquille Johnson might be the third-best dunker in the state of Georgia then — behind only Josh Smith of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and Travis Leslie at UGA. Some people laughed at the comparison, and it is kind of stretching it when you compare any high school player to any NBA player in any skill. Therefore, I’m changing my stance: With Leslie jettisoned out of state to the LA Clippers, Shaquille Johnson is now our No. 2 dunker in the state Georgia behind Smith. And if Smith gets traded …

Back to Johnson: More than a million views of his dunks published all over YouTube can’t be wrong. People are fascinated with his prolific slams. Count me as one of them. I know there is so much more to the game of basketball than dunking, but nothing generates more excitement in the crowd — for fans of both teams — than a good ol’ fashioned slam.

“I’ve heard some comparisons with Shaq’s style of dunking to Dominique Wilkins,” Milton coach David Boyd. “Just like with Dominique, Shaq jumps off both feet to dunk. Most people run and dunk off one foot. Jumping off two allows for a more powerful dunk.”

He has my vote. His style might be better than Nique because it looks like he is suspended in air. He has major hang time with those dunks. Wish we get a couple of him to play at Forest Park high. Go Panther Pride !!!

Why did he go to Auburn? Not familiar with his recruitment, but that seems like an odd choice.

The greatest dunker in Ga. High School history it the same person that Wilt Chamberlain said was the best in NBA history and that would be Herb White from Decatur High School. At 6′1″ he could place a dime on the top of the backboard. Someone gave hime the nickname of “The elevator from Decatur” and he was nothing short of phenomenal.

Brent “Air Georgia” Petway would probably be in the running. But with himself and Darrin Hancock, Griffin might have a claim to producing the best dunkers in the state.

Jeff Sheppherd out of McIntosh HS is the best ever. the best athlete to come out of Peachtree City. Hancock supporters might remember the exchange of dunks between Shep and Hancock when they played against each other. by the way he won the dunk contest at University of Kentucky.

Long before you tube chronicled such, only those spectators watching Marietta High games in the ’70s were witness to the dunks of Dale Ellis. Charlie Hood’s best player was also the state’s best during that period. By the time he reached UT, Ellis was more a wing player and less the dunk artist.

It may be the easy answer, but ‘Nique was the best dunker ever. The perfect blend of style, elevation, and viciousness.

Are you kidding me, Wilkins is the best dunker in NBA history. Hancock #2 and Kenny Walker #3. This kid is in the running for #4 with the kid that went to Tech I. Muhammad.

The best high school dunks I ever saw live at a game were by Jeff Sheppard(McIntosh H.S.), C.J. Williams(Woodward), and Brandon “Bam Bam” Boykin(Fayette Co).

All three of those guys are incredible athletes. Brandon Boykin plays football for UGA now and is good enough to play basketball at UGA also. C.J. Williams played football at Ga Tech. Jeff Sheppard won Mr. Ga. B’ball his senior year and won the dunk contest at the Boston Shootout his senior year while playing for the Atlanta team. Sheppard was the Most Outstanding Player in the 1998 Final Four. Also Sheppard won the state high jump that year and if I remember right he broke the state record that year in the high jump.

Jeff Sheppard gets my vote.

How the heck could Dominique Wilkins be the best dunker in Georgia HS history when he went to high school in North Carolina?

Michael Carvell

July 8th, 2011

@Paul, you are correct: Dominique did play HS basketball in North Carolina.

The topic for debate is this: Is Shaquille Johnson the best dunker in Georgia HS history? If not, then who is?

However, it’s fine to talk about other prolific dunkers who came through Georgia to play college for Georgia Tech or UGA, or in the NBA for the Hawks. It’s all in fun. Thanks for your post.

DARRIN HANCOCK- and it’s not even close. State championship game jumps over Reginald Tinch with four fouls in front of Bobby Cremins and John Salley. Salley goes crazy. Sky Walker was a close second; Joe Ward from Griffin definitely in the discussion.

Dwight was pretty unstoppable and could dunk from anywhere within fifteen feet…he was just too big, but he could still leap.

Ismail was good but WD Mohammed was sorry, always killed them.

JOSH SMITH DUNKING ON MY BOY PAUL DELANEY IN NINTH GRADE AT HIGH SCHOOL PRACTICE WAS THE GREATEST DUNK I EVERY SAW.

And Paul Delaney dunking in the 8th grade over everybody was impressive as well…boy could fly.

The best dunker is the guy who can put it up and in quickly with power and no wasted motion. Patrick Ewing comes to mind. Guys like this are confusing basketball with the circus.
