Sad news out of Georgia’s football recruiting circles. Here are some details by the AJC’s Mike Morris:

The mother of Auburn University freshman receiver and Troup County High School football standout Quan Bray was shot and killed Sunday morning in LaGrange.

According to WTVM-TV in Columbus, LaGrange police responding to a car accident found that the driver, Tonya Bray, had been shot in the head. She was pronounced dead at West Georgia Medical Center.

A short time after her death, Jeff Jones turned himself in, telling police that he had driven up to Tonya Bray’s car and shot her, WTVM reported. According to the station, Tonya Bray and Jones had been in an 18-year relationship.

Jones is being held in the Troup County Jail, charged with murder.

Here’s some more information from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer’s Alan Riquelmy:

Moments before Bray wrecked, witnesses saw a green car chasing her silver, four-door vehicle down Ragland Street. At one point, the driver of the green car pulled up beside Bray and fired several shots at her, LaGrange Police Capt. Dale Strickland said.

“That more than likely caused the victim to crash,” the captain added.

Police found Bray when they responded to what they believed to be only a single-vehicle accident on Ragland Street, the captain added.

Charles Flowers, Tonya Bray’s brother and Quan Bray’s high school coach, said Jones had been with Tonya Bray since Quan’s birth. Strickland said the parents had been living separately for about six months.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Flowers said. “I just know that I got a call this morning.”

Auburn coach Gene Chizik released a statement: “”Our thoughts and prayers are with Quan and his entire family during this extraordinarily difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, but the Auburn Family will support Quan in every way possible throughout the grieving and healing process ahead. Quan is a great young man with a bright future, and we will be there for him every step of the way.”

My sincerest sympathies to this young man. Not only does he lose his mother, but will also lose someone that apparently has been part of his life for a long time. I wish him well and hope he honors his mother’s memory by taking advantage of his athletic talents to complete his education.

Quan be strong during these extremely difficult times. My condolences to you and your family. Please take comfort in knowing that many are praying for you @ this time. Rest assured, there will be future challenges in life and how you handle them reflects the man you are.

The best way to honor your mom’s memory is to dedicate yourself in the classroom and football field. She will be there with you, spiritually, as you walk across that stage in 4 yrs. with your college degree. Lastly, embrace the opportunity to be a great role model to the many youngsters, particularly, in LaGrange by giving back to your community,

Sincerest sympathies Quan and family. You were heavily recruited as a young man with great potential and this sort of tragedy puts all the hoopla about recruitment and college football in general into perspective. I wish you the best in the upcoming years and to stay very strong through this horrible tragedy.

Tonya was an amazing supervisor at the home depot.. Everyone sends their sympathy to Quan Bray, but no one acknowledges Jamiere Bray his little brother.. I believe he is 7 or 8.. He needs our sympathy just as much, even though he’s not a “big football player”… He’s still a child at loss here.. Tonya was an amazing woman, and even more an AMAZING MOTHER!! She is gone and left us all very heart broken, she will NEVER be FORGOTTEN!! She will not have to live under the thumb of Jeff Jones anymore she is finally free.. Not only did they lose their mother but father also!! My heart goes out to these boys!!

I know the family and i am in total shock!!! I met Tonya two years ago she was my supervisor at Home Depot. She was the reason i got the job, she remembered me cheering for her son Quan!! Tonya always had a smile on her face every single time i seen her. she was a wonderful person, good friend, but a terrific mother!! she attended all of Quan’s games and supported him. I cant image how her sons feel or her family but they will be in my prayers!!!!

So much mud gets slung around on these blogs but it’s great to see support for the Bray family.

I hope Quan can have the time to recover, but this will be ongoing for some time. An athlete takes time off for a physical injury to rehab, in this instance it might be in his best interest to the same.

Sad to read this events disclosed in this article.

I sincerely hope that Quan’s and Jamiere’s family and friends, Quan’s HS Coach Flowers, and his Auburn family can reach out and give both these brothers, the love and emotional support they will both need to overcome the loss of their mother, and subsequently their father, as they try to cope with this tragedity.

God bless you, and I’ll be praying for both of you. Love in Christ.
