DB Alvin Hill commits to Maryland; brother plays at Virginia Tech

After thinking it over for a couple of days, Alvin Hill decided to accept a Maryland football scholarship on Thursday.

The defensive back from Luella High School had been overlooked early in the recruiting process, and was just beginning to generate interest from big-time schools after making rounds at summer college camps.

Hill auditioned for a scholarship at Maryland’s camp on Tuesday, performed so well he was offered within an hour afterwards, and committed to the Terrapins on Thursday. He’s the younger brother of Virginia Tech cornerback Detrick Bonner.

“I took a couple of days to think about it; I talked with my family and my brother and they all felt like it was a good opportunity,” Hill told the AJC. “I called Maryland and they were a little surprised that I committed within two days. I told them that they had showed me a lot of love and I was comfortable with my decision. They were really excited about coming there.”

Hill, who was just beginning to show up on the recruiting radar, picked Maryland over Tennessee-Chattanooga. He also had generated interest from Tennessee, Mississippi State, Appalachian State and Middle Tennessee State. After committing to Maryland, Hill canceled plans to attend summer camps at UGA, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Georgia Southern.

“Maryland is getting the first-ever permanent team captain for our football program,” Luella coach Nic Vasilchek said. “He’s a big-time playmaker. He set the school record with six interceptions in a season. When we beat Westlake 7-0 last year, he had three interceptions and caught a 48-yard touchdown pass.

“Alvin is a one-man wrecking crew for us. I think Maryland is going to play him at corner. They like the way he can cover in man-to-man. I think Maryland is getting an outstanding football player.”

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Hill has been clocked at 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He finished last season with 42 tackles, 6 interceptions and 5 pass breakups. He was named Luella’s defensive player of the year.

Hill has around a 2.8 GPA and plans to study physical therapy in college. “My dad is a physical therapist, so I’ll probably do that or something in the medical field.”

In related news …

Mark Richt, while trying to save the world in Honduras, didn’t know this kid existed or his high school.

Georgia Tech would’ve offered, but they were waiting on Wofford, Furman, Elon, Arkansas State, and Air Force to offer first.

All kidding aside congrats Mr. Hill.

Good luck young man. Maryland is in a pretty congested area but has a great tradition, and has been solid the last few years, so you made a good choice. Their D coach will make you a good player. Take some long johns though, LOL. As a native of Maryland, I remember it getting darn cold up there.

Pretty classless nutritionist comment.

And what do you know about UGA’s S&C program that would prompt you to say ‘no (staff) qualifications or certifications’ needed there either?

Seems UGA has a well qualified S&C staff that is really putting the players through a rigorous pre-season workout routine. .. Go Dawgs!

rhall,

Every once in a while you come across a comment in these blogs, that makes you question the age, maturity and educational level of the person who wrote it. Guess what, you fall under this category. What in God’s green earth was that rambling about? I guess it was an attempt at humor, or at least I hope it was.

If the players are complaining about the S and C program, you know it is working. Otherwise, they would just try and transfer to a school, where conditioning is being stressed less than UGA is now stressing it. The players know that by the 4th quarter last year, they were tired and not able to stop teams they had been parallel with for the first three quarters at the very least.
