Steve Spurrier has the Georgia-to-South Carolina pipeline working well for his 2012 recruiting class.
Or maybe it should be the McEachern High School-to-South Carolina pipeline.
Darius English committed to South Carolina over his other finalist of Arkansas.
The 6-foot-6, 210-pound defensive end is No. 5 from Georgia to commit to the SEC school for 2012. English is also the third McEachern player since last February to either sign or commit to the Gamecocks.
“South Carolina has always been the leader for me,” English told the AJC. “When I went down there this weekend, it really felt like home. I actually committed on Saturday but I had to talk to my parents a little more about it before telling the media. I did that, and told everybody today.”
Two of English’s high school teammates, LB Marcquis Roberts and TE Rory Anderson, signed with South Carolina last February. That made a big difference for English.
“Yes, I’ve got two people there that I know,” English said. “That way, when times get tough, I have two friends there for me. They will keep me going, keep pushing me.”
English picked the Gamecocks out of around 15 offers, which also included Arkansas, Auburn, North Carolina, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Both Georgia Tech and UGA had moderate interest in English.
“You have to give a lot of credit to South Carolina assistant G.A. Mangus; he really does a good job of recruiting this area and our school,” McEachern coach Kyle Hockman said. “Coach Mangus does an excellent job of building relationships with the kids.”
At McEachern last season, English had 17 sacks and 14 tackles for losses. “He is a outstanding pass rusher with a really high motor. He’s a big, tall, muscular kid who runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. He’s really tall and lean, and very physical on defense. He’s very hard to block one-on-one and really gets after it with that motor. He goes and goes and goes.”
