DE Darius English commits to South Carolina Gamecocks over Arkansas

Steve Spurrier has the Georgia-to-South Carolina pipeline working well for his 2012 recruiting class.

Or maybe it should be the McEachern High School-to-South Carolina pipeline.

Darius English committed to South Carolina over his other finalist of Arkansas.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound defensive end is No. 5 from Georgia to commit to the SEC school for 2012. English is also the third McEachern player since last February to either sign or commit to the Gamecocks.

“South Carolina has always been the leader for me,” English told the AJC. “When I went down there this weekend, it really felt like home. I actually committed on Saturday but I had to talk to my parents a little more about it before telling the media. I did that, and told everybody today.”

Two of English’s high school teammates, LB Marcquis Roberts and TE Rory Anderson, signed with South Carolina last February. That made a big difference for English.

“Yes, I’ve got two people there that I know,” English said. “That way, when times get tough, I have two friends there for me. They will keep me going, keep pushing me.”

English picked the Gamecocks out of around 15 offers, which also included Arkansas, Auburn, North Carolina, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Both Georgia Tech and UGA had moderate interest in English.

“You have to give a lot of credit to South Carolina assistant G.A. Mangus; he really does a good job of recruiting this area and our school,” McEachern coach Kyle Hockman said. “Coach Mangus does an excellent job of building relationships with the kids.”

At McEachern last season, English had 17 sacks and 14 tackles for losses. “He is a outstanding pass rusher with a really high motor. He’s a big, tall, muscular kid who runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. He’s really tall and lean, and very physical on defense. He’s very hard to block one-on-one and really gets after it with that motor. He goes and goes and goes.”

1st! Don’t forget that SPURRIER accepted a commitment from the Atlanta stud last year only to REVOKE IT a week before NSD because they had too many recruits committed. Beware, beware, beware

Before the big ignorant whining babies get on here and start criticizing UGA and Richt, If you were a defensive end would you come to UGA with the ends already there? Not if you wanted to play! You would have to be top 5 in the nation, not the state. Also before thay also start saying how UGA is losing to all these out of state schools: HEADLINE- Georgia has got about the most talent of any state in the USA, UGA absolutely cannot sign them all, does not need all of them and doesn’t want sdome of them, so all you Cock, Tide, Tiger, Jacket, Gator and Vols fans, don’t even start. And Go Dawgs! Kill Boise St! And to all the recruits out there that UGA has offered, come to UGA and be blessed in many ways, including a GREAT chance to make it to the NFL on offense or defense. The number of players in the NFL from UGA speaks for itself. NFL defensive coordinator from a TOP NFL team. Countless offensive players in the NFL and a great man and coach in Mark Richt, who by the way just left for a mission trip to Honduras to help those in this world who need help the most…you will be a much better MAN after playing at UGA and for Coach Richt….

I went to McEachern c/o 2004, I still follow the football team they are the class of Cobb county football by the way, and I have seen this guy play and he is a stud. He is virtually unblockable. As a Uga fan i’m sad they did not get in on this guy but South Carolina got a good one. Congrats to him and good to see my high school alma mater still have the D1 sec talent! Go Dawgs!

Now the REAL truth to the story. Neither UGA nor Georgia Tech offered a scholarship to any of the five. In other words, they can get into school at SC, but ain’t gonna get into school here. And not a one of them are considered above average players by Rivals. This is not even a story as it relates to keeping quality players in state. Perhaps for Tech, but not for the Dawgs. Sights are generally set a little higher.

Whether anyone likes it or will admit it, Spurrier is building a good program in Columbia and he now has a defense to keep them in games. That is if his players learn to take a cab instead of driving drunk like this past weekend.

Hats off to USC. Someone is over there is doing their home work. It seems like this kid is only a three star b/c he was 203 pounds his JR year. In two years this will come back to haunt UGA and GT. UGA make the same mistakes every year, they fold under pressure trying to get these five stars with profiles such as 6″2 260. When you recruit off size along and not play making ability, you end up 6 and 6 behind USC. I seen this English kid play a two game last year and he gave QB’s fits. UGA kills me, The kid is 6″6 barefoot, runs 4.5, 7″3 wingspan, 37.5 in vertical, 10′ 2 broad jump, first team all state in GA, with 17 sacks, with no offer from UGA. Heck, even I could find this information on scout.com. He also had three other offers from other SEC schools that beat UGA last year including Auburn the national champs so I don’t think UGA or Ga Tech is to good for him. O well, I guess this is another GA kid that will bite us in the butt.

Spurrier’s doing a nice job at recruting for upcoming class, and at winning the SEC last year. He’s getting big time players like Clowney & Lattimore, and making them successful on the field.

Wish Richt could do that.

Why can’t you children behave?

This kid wanted USCe and they wanted him, so what’s the big deal? With that pipeline from McEachern to USCe, maybe he is being steered by his high school coach, who knows? If he wanted UGA and they wanted him, he would have committed to UGA. Obviously, that is not the case. Hope that he is happy with his decision.

Good luck to him except when he plays UGA.

THERE aren’t enough good players in South Carolina to support both Clemson and uSC. there are going to be many openings for players of other states.

I wish I could copy and paste my comments from a similar story last week. But, here goes. The state of GA will have scores of D1 players sign on nsd. Dozens from metro Atlanta. Even a SC fan can do the math and realize that there is no mathmatical way that UGA can sign them all, even if they wanted. Therefore, many quality players from the state of GA will go to Allbarn, Alabammer, the swamp lizards, SC, etc…

I never have understood the shock/dismay/ridicule that comes whenever an athlete from the state of GA goes anywhere but UGA. You can’t put 20 gallons of water in a 10 gallon hat.

numbers

June 20th, 2011
10:44 pm

population in Georgia = 9.8M
population in SC = 4.5M

Of course SC and Clemson will want to recruit in GA, there are likely to be twice as many D1 level football players coming through the HS ranks.

In the US, there are 330 million inhabitants. There are roughly 12,000 Division I football players (119 programs x 100 players). So that’s 1 player for every 27,500 people in the US.

If Georgia has 9.8M people, that’s 345 NCAA D1 football players in GA, and 163 from SC.

If these programs had 100 players each:
If Clemson and SC filled their squads from South Carolina athletes only, they’d still need another 37 players, if not more.

If UGA and GT filled their squads from Georgia athletes only, there would be 145 kids who’d need to play out of state.

So yes – even an SC grad can do the math. Go cocks

Cool. Love the article AJC. You make sound like Spurrier is piping out the best talent in the state to Carolina. Not of course remotely close to what is happening. No offense to this young man but currently he is a 3 star / not ranked at his position. So not exactly 5 star elite talent leaving the state. If all the top state talent leaves and UGA gets none then worry but the last time I checked the potential best player in the state is already signed with UGA. I think we will be fine if we take care of business on the field.
