WR Jason Croom names 3 leaders, seeks UGA football offer

Norcross WR Jason Croom is a two-sport athlete, also playing basketball. He plans to focus solely on football in college, and was observed by UGA coach Mark Richt at 7-on-7 camp recently (AJC photo)

Jason Croom has named three leaders among his 16 football scholarship offers — Tennessee, Miami and Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver from Norcross High School said he may add two more. Croom would like for UGA to be one of the two.

“I like Georgia; they run a good offense and it’s close to home,” Croom told the AJC. Croom said one of his friends is Flowery Branch WR CJ Curry, who has already committed to UGA. (Note: UGA has two commitments at WR for its 2012 recruiting class, Curry and Georgia Military junior college’s Lonnie Outlaw)

“If Georgia offered me and I went there, it would be with someone I know. I would have CJ there, and we would push each other to be better.”

Croom had the opportunity to perform in front of UGA coach Mark Richt at the UGA 7-on-7 tournament a couple of weeks ago. He has had limited contact with Georgia Tech.  Croom is touring schools this summer, and plans to visit Florida State within the next week. He hopes to announce his college decision somewhere near or shortly after the start of his senior year of high school ball.

“I like all of my leaders for the same reasons,” Croom said. “They’ve got good coaches, good football programs, and need some wide receivers to come in and play. They all stress education, which is very important to my decision.”

UPDATE: Croom said he was offered by Michigan on Friday.

Based on his highlight video, looks like he can run some solid routes, has good hands, and isn’t afraid of double coverage. In addition, he values education, and I think that says quite a bit about his character. Offering him couldn’t hurt.

I hope UGA will offer this young man. Not sure why they haven’t yet. He sounds like he would be strongly leaning to UGA if they did, so let’s wait and see what goes on in the next few days. Perhaps with the limited number of scholarships UGA has, they are targeting in a different direction right now. Either way good luck to this young man.

Sounds like an Alshon Jeffery type guy. On top of that it sounds like he has a connection at UGA. I guess however if CMR has had a one on one look at him he may still have some work to do before he gets an offer.

If he earns it, they’re going to offer. Grades are important too. There’s a reason that AU and UT’s recent academic football scores were so low, while Vandy, UGA, and UF are carrying the academic torch of the SEC. If he makes the grade this year, he might get the offer. Young man, hard work will pay off.

Coach Richt is in perfect position to get pretty much whomever he wants from this point on with the 2012 class. The Croom kid does look good…….but grades and attitude is the make or break for him at this point…………Mark my words………Coach Richt has the luxury now of taking his sweet time, and recruiting nationally……….he will search high and low, get his needed Olinemen, RB, and WRs he needs to fill out his ‘12 roster. When all is said and done, 2012 in alot of ways may be a stronger class [when it comes to need] than the “dream team” of 2011…………Mark Richt knows what he’s doing……….Me? I would rather have him as my coach than anyone else in the SEC………….RED

Still@thebar,

You are always on here UGA bashing. Who is your team, and if you hate our’s so much, why are you always on here? By the way on the 2011 College rankings list UGA ranks #56, the U ranks #47 out of the 260 1st Tier schools listed. Not that big of a difference especially when the kid says he wants to stay close to home. Richt offers him, he’ll be a Dawg. Everything he says points to him doing so.

The kid wants to go to UGA – but does UGA have room if they are looking to get several OL more DT’s and DE and a safety and DB. Thought this was to be a small class for UGA. Can’t sign them all.

I would not count my recruiting eggs before they hatched – and besides that – what is UGA going to do with that talent – coach it up? develop it? don’t think so!!!!!

Hey Boise in Atl – rooting for UGA – it’s an SEC thing – but my money is on the Bronco’s.
Richt’s run in Athens is about over- UGA needs to change it up and bring in new leadership to a program that gets excited about being ranked in the top 25. Bama get’s excited if we are ranked in the top 5 – outside top 10 – we are disappointed.

Michael – thanks for policing the blogs! Are you banning the comments, or banning the comments AND those making the comments? It would really be nice if you banned the “person” who penned the offensive remarks so you could start to weed some of these people off of the blogs so the rest of us could actually enjoy your work and our interactions on these blogs.

If you were able to do so, I think you would see some civilized discussions starting to take place that would actually draw people back to your blogs.

Thanks for all of your good work. JM

Red,

I agree with you 100%. CMR is taking his time and there must be something there if CMR and staff are moving slowly on this young man. Don’t know if it is academics, but I got the feeling from the article it wasn’t but who knows. UGA will get what they need and they will produce.

I don’t think it is academics. I think Croom just isn’t at the top of our board right now, i think we made that clear when we still didn’t offer after we missed on Parks. right now I think the coaches are happy with where we are with Agholor and we have Patterson in front of Croom as well. just mho though.

Now the “inmates” are telling which schools to offer them??? Wow, you’ve already got kids doing the “package deals” so that one of his buds (more than likely NOT worthy of a scholly to said school) can get a FREE ride and take up a scholly from a more deserving student/athlete.

This “inmates-running-the-asylm” trend is going to get waaaay out of hand.

I love CMR to death, but I recently lost some respect for him. I talk to Eric Berry last week for about 15 mins. and he told me that he and Morgan Burnett really wanted to go to UGA. When asked why he didn’t he response was “It’s not his coaching style, but his recruiting. I went up to him and said I wanted to play for him and he wrote my name on his hand and that was it.” ???? Are you serious??? Do you know how great UGA would have been with Berry,Burnett, Reshad Jone, and Prince Miller in the secondary??? He also said that’s why big time GA talent keeps leaving the state because they(UGA) are seating back waiting to mid-season to offer kids! I say all this to say CMR get off your duff and start offering these top kids early. This the reason teams like Auburn, Alabama, FSU, and S.Car are invading the state for top talent every year!!!

Quoting Jacket Man: “Michael – thanks for policing the blogs! Are you banning the comments, or banning the comments AND those making the comments? It would really be nice if you banned the “person” who penned the offensive remarks….”

True, but a check would have to be done of the ISP or some method other than just banning by user name. Several times here I’ve had some of the middle school set post things under my username. Another improvement would be some software to limit a poster to one username and prevent the kiddies from posting under someone else’s name.

Honestly didn’t realize it was a game of who offers first..It is an honor to be offered a scholarship to UGA or any school to play football…If what BlackPat says above is true, then we don’t need kids that have that mentality and get their feelings hurt because they didn’t receive an offer first….Are the dogs a little more deliberate in their approach, perhaps, but if they offer then you can bet it will be solid and unless some unforseen issues come up, you can count on your scholarship offer still being there on NSD….go dawgs

I agree w/ Blackpat14; I feel UGA loses out on some of the top of the line players (not all) because of a slack attitude on some players; so far in this class, we were slack on Jessemen Dunker, Josh Holsey, and Dillon Lee!!!
