Rico McWilliams fell in love with South Carolina after a recent unofficial visit (Special)

Rico McWilliams, one of the top defensive backs in Georgia, committed to South Carolina on Thursday night.

McWilliams, a 6-foot, 170-pounder from Lovejoy High School, pick the Gamecocks among his 18 offers. His other finalists were Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, South Florida and Purdue.

“It just felt like the timing was right to do it,” said McWilliams, who relayed the news to South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward. “Coach Ward knew I loved the school and had been on for me awhile about committing. It’s my school. It was the time to do it.”

McWilliams will likely play cornerback for South Carolina, but may also get a look at safety. McWilliams said he only had limited communication with both Georgia Tech and UGA. He has a 3.26 GPA and plans to study business or education. He wants to coach college or high school football after playing it.

South Carolina has seven commitments for its 2012 college football recruiting class, including four from Georgia:

Lovejoy DB Rico McWilliams

Stephenson DB Kyle Fleetwood

Stephenson DL Carlos Hood

St. Pius OLB TJ Holloman

Looking at his photo ….. he needs to visit GNC and load up on some protein powder! A stiff breeze will blow this young man over.

But awesome for him … gets to play D-1 football, and get a good education – FOR FREE!

@sec champs Gamecocks
You may wanna slow your roll there, buddy. Put whatever you’re smoking under that palmetto tree down. Now. Maybe you should recheck the recruiting rankings for the past 5 years or so. UGA consistently rates within the Top 10 if not the Top 5. And I’m pretty sure the addition of Crowell, Drew, Swann, Rome, and Mitchell can attest to the ability of UGA instate recruiting. While we may not get ALL the best talent in the great state of Georgia, we certainly get the best from South Carolina. A.J. Green ring a bell? Hahahaha. Go back to your hen pen now.

Congrats to the kid. Good school. Can’t say much about their cheerleaders though. Lol.

UGA’s recruiting stinks. Last year turned out pretty well, but of the 13 ESPN top 150 players that are from the state of Georgia nine have said they are not going to UGA, one has committed to UGA and three remain uncommitted with UGA in the mix. In other words, if we hit a home run we get four of the top thirteen players out of the state of Georgia. Oh yeah, Alabama already has three of those thirteen. How does this happen?

I wish this young man the best. Note that he did not have offers from either Georgia or Tech, so this wasn’t exactly a case of the Dawgs or the Jackets losing a “recruiting battle.” The state of Georgia has well over a hundred D-I football prospects. Georgia can only sign a fraction of these (26 max next year, under the best case scenario). And fairly predictably, year after year, the Dawgs win the in-state recruiting battle once all the dust settles. Last season was a prime example.

And @ SEC Champs Gamecocks, you say that South Carolina is the “best place to play for a championship.” How many SEC titles does South Carolina have? That’s right–ZERO. And last season was your first appearance in the SEC title game ever. How many 10-win seasons does South Carolina have? ONE, in over a century of playing college football. As maligned as Richt has been over the last few seasons, he still AVERAGES 9.6 wins a season, has had two SEC titles and three SECCG appearances over his ten-year stint in Athens. He’s won 10 games or more six times–and will, in all likelihood, do it a seventh time this season. So don’t go around crowing about how great you are just yet. Better build up some actual tradition first.

Good enough to get a scholly from USCe………

Has a 3.26 GPA and is considering a major in Bus. Admin…………

Plays his HS FB in the Metro Atl Area……………….

yet GT cannot close the deal.

GT’s problem recruiting-wise, is NOT losing out on top prospects to ug@, GT’s problem is that we get absolutely killed by USCe, Auburn, Clemson, Kentucky, and Tenn for the high-3* level recruits that can fill out a roster and grow into starters or provide quality depth for an ACC Team like GT.

The Metro Area (i.e. GT FB) loses too many Academic Qualifiers that could have gone to GT yet they choose SEC Schools that are not L$U, Florida, Bama, ug@.

Football_365, I’ve never heard or read anywhere that SC fans have said they have a dynasty. What they do have is a solid foundation and a coach with a desire to win. What UGA has is several top 10 recruiting classes and seems to be getting worse on the field rather than better.
As far as SC getting beat by Auburn and Fla. State, lots of teams got beat by Auburn last year and Fla. State is a pretty darn good football team. If I was a UGA fan I would worry how UGA does against SC, rather than how SC does against other teams.

It appears that if UGA or tech. do not get a certain high school player from instate, he instantly becomes one of the top players at his position in the state. I am sure this young man is a good player, but how is it, that the recruiting blog for AJC elevates every player UGA or Tech. doesn’t get, to top or near the top of the list?

Football_365, I read every article concerning college football in four different papers everyday and I have yet to find where any fan of SC has said they are a dynasty. Yes you have a few idiots from every fanbase to brag beyond any truth, but none in the AJC tops UGA posters.on a daily basis. Football is just like business and marriage…..it’s not what you did several years ago, it’s what are you doing now. With UGA’s recent recruiting classes they should win the National Championship at least every three or four years……yet how long has it been since UGA has even controlled the SEC East. I live in Ga. and am a avid SEC fan and I even pull for UGA, but am totally puzzled by how many people in this state look down their nose at other universities.

I won’t try to speak on behalf of ug@, but as far as GT goes I’d rather get guys like this that have been signing with USCe, Kentucky, Clemson, Auburn, Tenn, etc, rather than giving out schollies to out-of-State guys like Lance Richardson that we had to beat out E. Carolina & Furman for, that haven’t been able to get on the field and help GT FB in any significant way.

As much as acc(intentional small case) fans hate the SEC, it is the best CFB out there, and when guys from Ga. HSs end up in the SEC, they have a track record of doing very well, I’d love to see what those guys could do in the acc playing for GT.

In-state guys like this that end up the SEC, is why GT seems to perpetually have Depth issues, and why those Depth Issues usually manifest themselves on Game Days with crappy STs play, and lack of quality back-ups like when GT lost to USAF because there was not ONE scholly FB player that could catch a friggin’ punt.

ug@ Recruits well enough such that not getting guys like this is no big deal, but for GT it is taking a heavy toll on our FB Program.

Columbia and USC are much better than athens and uga…just visit both places and see for yourself.

uga always has a top 5 recruiting class…ALWAYS…yet what happens when they hit the field…oh yeah, Bobo and Grantham are coaching them. Coaching makes a big difference and so does the strength coach. USC has finially got the right dudes in those spots so look out uga.

Hey Rico, you will be a star at USC. This kid already looks like he will knock your block off. I bet the guys bashing his size on here have never played football and would NEVER line up against this kid.

does the ncaa factor in the overall school graduation rate when they penalize an athletic program? Clough wanted a higher overall %, but that is not what Tech is about, 1/3 of kids that start there will not graduate there, whether they play sports or not……..to those that advocate a degree for the jocks, when we have a program that is predominately atheletes, they will have seen my last penny and my last second of time……..WhinE all you want……

Visit Columbia and come back that it is better than Athens? Look I understand the excitement you have over your schools first Championship since 1969, the ACC Title, but really that comment is rather delusional. Visit Columbia and you find that it is a sweltering urban black top with little to see. Now if your argument had the University located in Charleston, ya might have a argument. Ya dig? Hate on the Dawgs all you like, but NEVER compare Columbia to Athens.

Actually, I am a UGA alum and live in Summerville, SC. The way I see it, Clemson and USC have locked down the state lines in SC: UGA used to get some of the top talent out of SC, but not any more. If Richt had any sense, he ought to hire the recruiting coordinator from Clemson — this guy is doing a better job than Garner. And I do believe USC will unfortunately beat UGA — they play tougher and love to beat UGA. On the other hand, I have heard many Clemson and USC residents describe Columia as concrete and hot. I grew up in Athens and it’s a beautiful place to live.

I don’t think that UGA offered the young man. He is listed at 47th best CB by scouts com and not in the top 150 by EPSN. I think UGA had enough Letters out to CB rated a little higher.

Hope the young man does well, as he appears to be a solid young kid with his head on right.

What I’m about to say does not have to do with Rico McWilliams in particular … There are around 200 Georgia HS prospects every year that sign D1 football scholarships.
