One of Georgia’s top high school football players committed to Auburn on Wednesday.
JaQuay Williams picked Auburn over his childhood favorite of Ohio State, among other offers. Williams is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide reciever from Sandy Creek High School.
“I think Auburn is getting a really talented football player with a huge upside,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC. “He has a good frame, lots of strength and great hands. There are some things he needs to improve on, like route running, and he knows that. But he’s a kid with a lot of upside.”
Ohio State had inside position but lost momentum with the resignation of coach Jim Tressel. Auburn won out after entertaining Williams and his family last weekend on an unofficial visit. Williams has called Auburn assistant Trooper Taylor, the guy who gave a “chest bump” to the President last week at the White House, the “best wide receivers coach in the nation.”
“Auburn is close to home, JaQuay developed a good relationship with the coaching staff, and Auburn obviously has had some success and they are in need of some wideouts — I think all of those were contributing factors,” Walker said.
Williams claimed around 20 offers, including Georgia Tech. He said he did not have an offer from UGA but was invited to Mark Richt Camp last Saturday to be evaluated. However, Williams opted to make a recruiting trip instead to Auburn.
Sandy Creek has won back-to-back state championships in Georgia. Last season as a junior, Williams caught 48 passes for 728 yards and 10 touchdowns for Heard County High School. He transferred to Sandy Creek last spring. Note: Williams is on track to meet NCAA academic requirements, according to his high school coach.
Sandy Creek has four players that have committed or been offered by SEC schools:
On Tuesday, Auburn secured a commitment from TJ Yeldon, who is ranked as the No. 1 RB in Alabama, according to Scout.com. The 6-2, 190-pound Yeldon picked Auburn over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Florida State and Oregon.
UPDATE: Auburn offered “the state’s fastest prospect from Georgia” on Wednesday — Carrollton DB Jonathan Jones. He has around a dozen offers, including Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Stanford. He attended camp at Auburn last week and got word about an offer on Wednesday. With the graduation of Mitchell County’s Justin Scott-Wesley (signed with UGA), Jones easily takes over the title of the state’s “fastest” college football prospect. Jones won a pair of GHSA track state championships last month in the 110-meter hurdles (14.02 seconds) and 300 hurdles (37.39). He has a 3.7 GPA and plans to attend upcoming camps at Tennessee and Florida.
