JaQuay Williams picks Auburn over Ohio State (UPDATED)

One of Georgia’s top high school football players committed to Auburn on Wednesday.

JaQuay Williams picked Auburn over his childhood favorite of Ohio State, among other offers. Williams is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide reciever from Sandy Creek High School.

“I think Auburn is getting a really talented football player with a huge upside,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker told the AJC. “He has a good frame, lots of strength and great hands. There are some things he needs to improve on, like route running, and he knows that. But he’s a kid with a lot of upside.”

Ohio State had inside position but lost momentum with the resignation of coach Jim Tressel. Auburn won out after entertaining Williams and his family last weekend on an unofficial visit. Williams has called Auburn assistant Trooper Taylor, the guy who gave a “chest bump” to the President last week at the White House, the “best wide receivers coach in the nation.”

“Auburn is close to home, JaQuay developed a good relationship with the coaching staff, and Auburn obviously has had some success and they are in need of some wideouts — I think all of those were contributing factors,” Walker said.

Williams claimed around 20 offers, including Georgia Tech. He said he did not have an offer from UGA but was invited to Mark Richt Camp last Saturday to be evaluated. However, Williams opted to make a recruiting trip instead to Auburn.

Auburn already has two Georgia commitments for 2012 with Creekside DB Josh Holsey and Callaway TE Ricky Parks.

Jonathan Jones

Sandy Creek has won back-to-back state championships in Georgia. Last season as a junior, Williams caught 48 passes for 728 yards and 10 touchdowns for Heard County High School. He transferred to Sandy Creek last spring. Note: Williams is on track to meet NCAA academic requirements, according to his high school coach.

Sandy Creek has four players that have committed or been offered by SEC schools:

On Tuesday, Auburn secured a commitment from TJ Yeldon, who is ranked as the No. 1 RB in Alabama, according to Scout.com. The 6-2, 190-pound Yeldon picked Auburn over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Florida State and Oregon.

UPDATE: Auburn offered “the state’s fastest prospect from Georgia” on Wednesday — Carrollton DB Jonathan Jones. He has around a dozen offers, including Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Stanford. He attended camp at Auburn last week and got word about an offer on Wednesday. With the graduation of Mitchell County’s Justin Scott-Wesley (signed with UGA), Jones easily takes over the title of the state’s “fastest” college football prospect. Jones won a pair of GHSA track state championships last month in the 110-meter hurdles (14.02 seconds) and 300 hurdles (37.39). He has a 3.7 GPA and plans to attend upcoming camps at Tennessee and Florida.

Well, Jaquay, of those two programs, you seem to have made the best choice. Good luck in your career, except when you play UGA. .. Go Dawgs!

Between those two, he made the right pick although no one knows what the future holds NCAA wise.

Good luck and I hope you get your academic house in order so you can go there.

I guess this goes against what a bunch of crying UGA fans were saying on this blog earlier. The Dawg fans were saying Richt didn’t offer because this kid must have had some “issue”. Looks like Richt was just late to the party. Nice try, puppies.

Orange Julius you obviously have a limited education and no not what you speak. Not sure if jealousy, or stupidity! If you get time do some research on CTT and understand what he means to kids he coaches and the communities he gets involved in.
Kid has opportunity to get a degree, play major college football in best conference in country, and some great (non fair weather) fans, and yes outstanding coaches all around.
It is great to be an Auburn Tiger!

@ 1953Dawg,

I get it now. The article says the kid was invited to a UGA camp to be evaluated, but that’s just me “drinking the AJC kool-aid.” Kind of hard to land an offer from a coach who hasn’t evaluated you yet isn’t it? Also, I find it hard to believe that with the loss of AJ Green that UGA would only take 1 WR in the 2012 class, don’t you?

I guess since UGA didn’t offer him the kid is no good or has some sort of issue. If UGA does offer a kid and he chooses an out-of-state school, then UGA didn’t really want him. Is this how the Dawg logic works? It looks like it.

You folks that are trashing a high school KID are total scumbags! No school can get every kid they recruit. These kids have enough pressure with dozens of coaches after them without having to read tasteless comments. If you don’t like where they chose to go then that is YOUR problem, but please as least ACT like an adult and don’t take out your frustrations on a KID!

Great comments. As much as this Dawg would love to see UF go 0-12 this year, no way am I going to attack a 17/18 yr old kid for choosing to go to UF, UT, AU or anywhere else. I just can’t understand how folks let their passions control their common sense.

@Ca dawg, thanks for the comment. It’s disappointing to see a kid trashed for not picking someone’s favorite school, and it happens on here much too often. It is NOT by the majority of people, most of which are kind enough to comment. It’s just a few here and there, over and over. We try to give as much leeway as possible, and some the general discussion is quite entertaining. However, the personal attacks on kids for unfounded and false reasons, or simply because a player didn’t pick someone’s favorite school, is disappointing. I will do better with monitoring the comments moving forward.

War Eagle@5:15. Dude, instead of going after Orange and questioning his education, worry about your education, “no not what you speak”???? NO not what you speak?? Shouldn’t that be KNOW, meaning to have knowledge. Your Auburn education certainly shows big guy.

I have no idea why Georgia didn’t offer the young man, nor will Coach Richt say why. Perhaps the same reason Alabama and Coach Saban didn’t offer. Maybe we liked other WR’s better, after all Auburn runs a different offensive scheme than does Georgia or Alabama. Those schemes call for WR’s do be more engaged in blocking for run support, perhaps he doesn’t like to block. Just a guess.

War Eagle, “orange Julius, you obviously have a limited education and no not what you speak .” I can’t believe you called some one out on their “limited education” when you don’t even ” know” the correct usage for the word “know”! You used the word “no” to substitute for the word “know.” We all learned usage in grade school! What a Maroon!

It’s easy to understand the vitriol coming from some of the lesser evolved dog fans. Auburn is putting together a monster class cashing in on the NC and raiding the state of GA. to do it. This does not bode well for the dogs long term and in their barely mammilian mind the still on all fours leg humpers know it, sensing this as even the simplest creature can sense a threat to their survival and respond aggresively to it. Unfortunately for UGA fans the arc of biological and sports history bends in favor of those able to exploit it. Currently that is Auburn. Enjoy the years of beatings coming your way doggies. You’re a day late and and at least a few dollars short. Not that Auburn would resort to paying its players just to beat you to that punch.

Georgia…you lost another one —

The state of Georgia will have scores of D1 players signed next February. Dozens from metro Atlanta alone. Obviously, UGA can’t sign them all. Therefore, most will go elsewhere. They will go to Allbarn, Alabammer, Tek, Swamp Lizards, and many other colleges. Logically, many of those going elsewhere will be highly sought after recruits. Just like UGA sometimes gets one or two from the states of Alabama, Florida, and SC.

I never had understood the shock/dismay/criticism/ridicule when a GA High Schooler goes anywhere other than UGA. You can’t put 20 gallons of water in a 10 gallon hat.

UGA has noticeably more difficult standards of admissions and was not willing to offer a kid with questionable test scores when offers are already skin tight. UGA can sign around 20-23 max with 10-11 already committed and a few silent commits including someone who currently “favors” Auburn and Alabama. Jaquay seems like a good kid, as far as I know, but Georgia WILL land AGHOLOR, we WILL LAND AGHOLOR who is a beast, a mixture of Malcolm Mitchell and AJ Green… BALLER. UGA should hopefully get Pattersen who is 6′4″ and unlike Jaquay does not run a 4.6 but rather a 4.4. UGA doesn’t cheat in academics like Auburn did a few years ago (without punishment as they covered it up and forced the professor to retire) so we can’t afford to take the risk with the possibility that Jaquay fails to qualify, which is a possibility. Good luck to the kid. I’ll be rooting for him except against UGA, of course. Auburn fans trashing UGA’s recruiting class of 2012 are ignorant and can’t tell the difference between “know” and “no”, I guess the result of 4 generations of inbreeding.
