Khalid Henderson commits to the Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee landed one of Atlanta’s best-kept secrets on Tuesday.

Khalid Henderson, who plays linebacker at Cobb County’s Pebblebrook High School, committed to Tennessee only minutes after being offered by Volunteers coach Derek Dooley. Henderson was an emerging prospect who already had 13 offers, including Louisville, UConn, Troy, Middle Tennessee State, Ball State, and Georgia State.

“Coach Dooley was a little surprised when I committed,” Henderson told the AJC. “It was like he didn’t want to put pressure of me to commit. He asked me ‘What other camps do you plan on attending this summer?’ I told him probably Clemson, Georgia Tech and some others; Then I said ‘Coach, you don’t have to worry about that because you’ve got a Volunteer with me.’ He was really excited to hear that, congratulated me, and welcomed me to the Tennessee family.”

The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder blew away Tennessee’s coaches with his performance at a recent camp, leading up to Tuesday’s offer from the Volunteers. Henderson was invited to last Saturday’s Mark Richt Camp by UGA assistant Will Friend but couldn’t make it due to taking the ACT test. Many other SEC and ACC schools had expressed heavy interest, requesting Henderson to show up at camp to be evaluated for an offer.

“I really like Tennessee,” Henderson. “When I visited there, I really liked the campus and atmosphere. I really like the coaches, and get along with them well. They told me, after the way I performed at camp, it was only a matter of time before they offered. When they did, I took it.”

Henderson is a three-year starter at Pebblebrook, and led the team in tackles last year. He had a season-high 13 tackles against Campbell. When Pebblebrook had injuries at tailback last season, Henderson was inserted into the game on offense and had a 65-yard run on his first carry. Henderson has a summer job at Six Flags. He wants to study business and sports management in college. “I want to be a sports agent. I just have a passion for that. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of the sports industry because I love it so much.”

Pebblebrook coach Randall Smith said Clemson, South Florida, Central Florida, Kentucky and Purdue were among the other colleges beginning to inquire about and recruit Henderson. “He has got great size and speed, running a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. That’s what he can do at linebacker — cover guys in the open field on the outside, and play inside with the big boys, when needed.”

Pebblebrook has two other players that project to sign with major colleges — QB CJ Goodman (6-0, 170) is being evaluated by Georgia Tech, Navy and Georgia Southern at QB, Clemson as an athlete, and by Tennessee at WR; LB Sertonuse Harris (6-0, 185) has generated interest from Navy, Troy and Middle Tennessee State.

I don’t know – looks pretty good to me. Certainly too small right now to play LB in the SEC, but when he puts on the weight he should be good if he keeps his speed.

UGA 2001, sorry you mised the part where he was asked to come to Richts Camp. And as far as as “sounding about right for the Vols”……Eric Berry, Juwaun James, Brian Randolph. All great players that we took out of Georgia. And I know…they were plyers that UGA didnt want. Just remember when Da’Rick puts up two Tds on you in 4 months.

I’m so surprised since Ball State and Troy offered that PJ didnt go after him!!!! Maybe if Ga. Southern or Wofford had offered then PJ could have grabbed him.

Just like Marlon Brown wanted to go to UT but his grandmother made the decision for him. Im sure EB regrets not coming to UGA and playing for the brilliant defensive mind that was Willie Martinez.

And Matt Stanford: Does the whole Marlon Brown thing still sting? It’s not like him or Da’Rick have come anywhere near there recruiting hype. Although Rogers definitely wins in the thug-manship dept.

No Berry didn’t want to go to UGA after his visit. Mark Richt didn’t even know his name he said that he wrote it on his hand and was too busy focusing on Caleb King. I think Mark Richt knows Berry’s name now though.

ut and dooley are now forced to sign players who have only have offers from Louisville, UConn, Troy, Middle Tennessee State, Ball State, and Georgia State? Things have gone way down in knoxville. Dooley’s not going to last 3 years if he can’t sign some good players. Bama is going to beat tenn like a rented mule, as usual, with a roster full of 4-5 star studs!!! The Tide will win the SEC—book it.

…Dooley is putting it together right. Bama and Georgia both took their licks back 6 or 7 years ago, so weve taken ours…now its time to start turning the corner. And this certainly a step in that direction. Bama lost alot more that what they want to let on, we may not beat em…but we’ll give them a good run for their money this year. we could very be the Sleeper in the East.

I cant believe Ga is asking if Tn still plays football.Ga has won what 5 out of the last 15 times.Berry was never going to Ga and you people know it.MR is Phil Fulmer in training. He is on his last leg at Ga and then the dawgs might get a real coach and the rest of the sec might have a reason to worry.Im not even a Tn fan but they will be back and probably alot sooner than people expect.
Oh, I think I seen where someone said Ga cant sign them all.Well signing them and coaching these players up are two different things. They are no better when they leave than they are when they get there.

Khalid Henderson is a phenomenal athlete and student. I’m glad that Coach DD is recruiting every school he possibly can and evaluating every athlete to the best of there knowledge. Coach DD is not only recruiting talented athletes on the field but also in the classroom. We are the Dark Horse of the SEC and I love it more every time I hear it. GO VOLS!!!!!!!
