FB-DE Quayvon Hicks committed to UGA (Special)

UGA got a little help on offense on an unusually busy Friday for college football recruiting.

Quayvon Hicks committed to Georgia.

“Yes sir, I’m a Dawg,” Hicks told the AJC on Friday night.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder from Pierce County High School will play fullback for the Bulldogs.

Hicks was being recruited by other schools at defensive end. Hicks picked the Bulldogs out of around 10 offers, including Tennessee, Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Miami. He also had serious interest from numerous other schools.

Hicks is commitment No. 7 for Georgia for its 2012 college football recruiting class.

Hicks informed Georgia coach Mark Richt when he was attending UGA’s football camp.

  • Friday’s biggest shocker was DB Travis Blanks of Tallahassee, Fla., committing to Clemson — not necessarily that he picked the Tigers but that he committed sooner than expected. It happened one day after Blanks made an unofficial visit to UGA. Blanks announced his college decision on Twitter, saying, “Tiger town baby.” He also thank the ACC school’s supporters via social media: “Getting major love from the Clemson family and fans! Just talked to QB Tajh Boyd, and safety Jonathan Meeks.” Blanks picked Clemson over Auburn, Alabama, UGA and Texas Christian. He told the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat that he decided on Clemson after three days of camping there: “It’s not even about football. With the relationships I’ve built there, I felt more comfortable there than any other place. I believe in them and they believe in me. It’s a small city. It’s a great school. Everyone I talked to was so passionate about it. I think it’s a nice place.” Interesting: Blanks said he still plans to visit TCU next month, and said he informed the Clemson coaches about the trip.

He’s the typical size of a FB. Great size and great speed. People look at a FB and don’t get excited but I do. They create plays that we don’t notice. Those long runs that RBs get a chance to break off, are of course due to the O-line doing it’s job but the FB has a great deal to do with that too. I hope to see him laying the wood to many linebackers and safeties in the future. Welcome young man. Go Dawgs!

Tech fumbled 2 punt because the punt returner was hurt. Tech should have and would have beat Air Force bad if Tarrant was not hurt and couldn’t even just fair catch punts on Air Force’s side of the 50. UGA(richt) didn’t have the GUTS to beat UCF. Tech lost due to an injury late in the game that gave Air Force the ball back twice in the las 10 minutes.

He couldn’t play B back at tech he is not fast enough. At UGA he will get to block/pass protect and get passed over to score a TD on 4 th and inches to beat UCF. He doesn’t want the pressure of having to pass a class and learn to run the ball.

The fact that you bring up an injury to a PR as the reason that GT lost that bowl game merely proves that Coach Fish Fry isn’t the genius that “some segments” of the GT Fanbase make him out to be.

To RRTDawgs: Obviously, when you got to the bar, you sounded like an unusuall level headed, fair & balanced UGA fan, but when A couple of unusual GT bloggers were negeative, you showed your true colors. How about getting on to your own fans/bloggers when they trash kids that commit to GT or any other school besides their own and wishing the kid bad luck. Go back and look at history and you’ll see your own UGA family are very negative and hateful toward any kid that chooses another school besides UGA. Then again, most of the negative bloggers commenting and acting like asses, never attended UGA. That’s the unfortunate thing for the true UGA alumni, is you all have to deal with the low lifes that give the educated from the school a bad rap. Good luck to the kid.

Great comment, people forget how important a good fullback is. I can’t remember how many goal line situations where a fullback ran the ball or caught a touchdown pass off of play action. Very good pickup, hopefully this starts some much needed momentum to shut some of these stupid haters up!

I prefer a GATA attitude instead of all this KOOL-AID, we are great approach by the minority of our fans who are SATISFIED with 21 Losses these last Five (5) Seasons – an average of OVER in EXCESS of 4 Losses a Season in this DOWN SEC EAST.

What we have around here is way to much HYPE and EXCUSES for not beating the teams we should beat, and for absolutely losing to the teams who are good.

    Thomas Brown,

In 2007, UGA sent out a letter to a FB
    IN 2008, UGA offered 5 FB’s
In 2009, UGA offered a FB
In 2011, UGA offered a FB

How many high schools actually use true FB’s? The answer is very few. Usually it is a position filled by the biggest running back, on the team. Very few high schools actually employ a pro style offense where the FB is used most.
Just thought you ought to have some facts before you accuse UGA of not trying to get fullbacks. Look up some history of recruiting done by UGA and you will probably find that they do a pretty fair job of recruiting.
Check and see how many college teams truly use a pure FB at that position. UGA’s system does, but as you can see by this years team, if you have a tight end, in UGA’s offensive system, he can play in the fullback slot. In the case of this year, our fullback will be an added bonus because he is mighty big for a FB first off, and since he was previously a TE, he can catch some passes not normally slotted into play for a FB.

    EXCUSES.

    A lot of excuses.

At the beginning of which, is a list of years in which we recruited zero fullbacks

    2011
    2010
    2009
    2008
    2007

We also do not have any safety. As a matter of fact, UGA Bulldogs’ Football has been Built upon the Excellence of our Safety Positions. Through the years, these have been our best positions. Our secondary, and it has been this way for a while now, is totally non-existent.

We haven’t recruited any tailback since we Redshirted Knowshon Moreno, so that, then we got to see the best running back in our football program over the last two dozen years, for a grand total of just only 2 years.

We have 5 recruits, all very highly-rated, who are now attrition this Summer – no longer on the team as all 5 of them have transferred-out.

We had a recruit whom Mark Richt offered a Scholarship come to our campus this 2011 year, and go into our locker room and steal from the other players.

We had a Mark Richt recruit who declared for the draft early, who on a team who could not get any pressure on opposing quarterbacks and allowed all 5 of the teams who ended in the Top 25 beat us (plus 2 more who did not make the Top 25 who also beat us), and so he went to the NFL Combine and showed up – on Drugs and Failed the Drug Test. This was 3 weeks ago.

Over the previous 5 Recruiting Classes, Mark Richt has managed to put himself # 2 all-time in the Fulmer Cup. This is for all of 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and now into 2011.

Mark Richt had 3 players ruled Academically ineligible for the 2010-2011 Bowl Season.

We have recruited very poorly for Offensive Linemen, as well. Currently having a roster of 5 who can play well, and no one behind them.

If Crowell does not pan out, we have no tailback at The University of Ground Attack, again.

We led the nation in arrests on our football team last year. National Champion Fulmer Cup.

21 Losses over these same last 5 years is an average of 4 plus per season.

The state of Georgia produces more High School players who go on to the NFL than every other of the 50 states, except 3.

We are # 23 in won/lost record over these same last entire 5 years.

Oh, yeah, we recruit just fine.

No fullback recruited (that means actually signed by Mark Richt) 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

Here are the non-existent fullbacks (according to you) who have been signed by all these teams for all these last five (5) years in a row of Mark Richt signing NONE : Here is the list of teams who signed the top-notch Fullback Recruits over these last entire Five (5) Recruiting Classes : Florida, Texas, Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami of Florida, Tennessee, Southern California, Illinois, Arizona State, NC State, Michigan, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Missouri, South Florida, West Virginia, Michigan State, Clemson, UCLA, Nebraska, LSU, Stanford, Mississippi State, Oregon Florida State, and Auburn.

Should be obvious after the 1st 2 games.

Hey Thomas Brown – appreciate your passion and understand your frustration – but calm down buddy!

This article was about the young men that committed to their schools – congrats to all of them.

Teams go in cycles – Yes – disappointed in the last couple of years at UGA – but the overall work Richt has done is very good. Richt has changed up his staff, the way the team prepares physcially – and discipline is much better. There is a sense of urgency.

    Let’s see what happens!

Several years ago – a proud football program had the following records after having several seasons of success and going 11-0:
    – 8-2-1
    - 8-3
    – 6-5 (losing to Vandy and Colorado – and was blown out by Tennessee and Auburn)
    - 6-5-1.

The fans of this school wanted the HC to be fired – he became very unpopular – donations lagged and the coach was on the “HOT SEAT”. Many claimed the game passed him by.

    Name of the school: ALABAMA
Name of the Coach: Paul Bryant

He went on to have a decent career.

As for UGA – I am excited at the improvements and changes that have taken place – and believe we will see mcuh better results on the field. GO DAWGS!

Good for UGA – nice pick up!

Sir Barks A Lot – incredible post – and thanks for the history lesson on Alabama football.

These programs go in cycles. UGA is going to be better next year – setting up for a big 2012 season. Your issue is getting by Florida. South Carolina will take a step backward after this season – they are peaking right now. Tennessee will be interesting to watch – should be OK this year – 2012 is key for Dooley – NOT convinced he will get them to a 10 win season – maybe the Tennessee’s version of Mike Shula.
