Former Walton High School basketball star Ryan Harrow announced that he will visit five schools, including Georgia.

The 6-foot-1 point guard also intends to take trips to Kentucky, Louisville, St. John’s and Texas, Harrow revealed on Twitter on Wednesday.

Harrow requested and was granted a scholarship release from North Carolina State after the coaching change with the condition he could not transfer to another ACC school.

As a freshman this past season, Harrow came off the bench for the first 16 games but ended up starting seven of the final eight. He averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists.

UGA’s Mark Fox has already signed five players for his 2011 recruiting class but told the AJC recently that he may sign one more if he found a player he really liked.

Union Grove’s Charles Mann offered by national champion UConn, will visit Georgia Tech

UConn (AP)

UConn coach Jim Calhoun hit the jackpot with former Norcross High star Jeremy Lamb and is after another Georgia guard (AP)

This is a big week for Charles Mann, one  of the Georgia’s top college basketball prospects for 2012.

A few days ago, the Union Grove High School guard was offered by the reigning national champions, UConn. Mann already had 10 early offers, including Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Tulane, Rice, George Mason and Northwestern. But this one was special.

“I have always been a big fan of UConn,” Mann told the AJC. “That’s pretty much my dream school. I was real excited and shocked when they offered.”

Was he excited enough to commit? “No, my family wants to go up there and spend some time with the coaches before we think about making any decisions.”

While UConn appears to the early frontunner for Mann, it faces a tough challenger with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets haven’t offered but have scouted Mann a few times recently.

Tony Kimbro Jr., son of former Louisville basketball standout, signs with Georgia State (UPDATED)

New Georgia State coach Ron Hunter had one scholarship left for his 2011 basketball recruiting class and really didn’t want to use it unless he found a top talent.

He found one.

Tony Kimbro Jr., a 6-foot-6, 180-pounder from Jefferstown High School in Louisville, Ky., signed with Georgia State on Wednesday. The lefty also had offers from Nebraska and Manhattan, among others.

Kimbro is the son of former Louisville basketball standout Tony Kimbro.

“Because of the timing, we worked really hard to get to right type of player,” Hunter said. “If we hadn’t gotten the right type of player, I would’ve held the scholarship. We’re excited to get this caliber of player this late in recruiting. I have to give my assistants a lot of credit with that.”

New Georgia State assistant Everick Sullivan played at Louisville with the elder Kimbro, whose son was not offered by Louisville.

Kimbro is projected to play shooting guard and small forward at Georgia State.

Kevin Ware had kept a low profile since telling the AJC last Thursday that he was de-committing to Central Florida.

On Tuesday night, the 6-foot-4 guard from Rockdale County High School was active again on his Twitter account and announced “Got my list of schools.”

The world awaited.

Ware tweeted “no order kstate, kansas, uga, ucla, uofl” — which we did our best to translate to Kansas State, Kansas, Georgia, UCLA and Louisville.

However, the next tweet was the most interesting one: “depending on what’s going on at ucf once everything cleared up will determine if there on my list.”

Ware abruptly reneged on his pledge to Central Florida last Thursday after being informed about a pending article in the New York Times that alleged that UCF used a convicted felon with agent ties to recruit him. At the time, Ware told the AJC, “Louisville and Georgia are my [frontrunners]. I just have to …

Will UGA be the next offer for Norcross WR Jason Croom?

Croom (special)

Croom (special)

Who will be the next homegrown product offered a football scholarship by UGA?

It could be a member of the 2011 state champions in Georgia’s largest classification — in basketball.

On Monday, Georgia assistant coach Bryan McClendon showed up for the first day of spring football practice at Norcross High School. His primary interest was wide receiver Jason Croom, who is one of the state’s hottest prospects.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder has nine early football offers, including Miami,  Mississippi State, Auburn, Arkansas and Louisville.

UGA could be the next.

“My coaches said [McClendon] told them that Georgia was going to offer,” Croom told the AJC. “That’s my high schools coaches told me, but I’m waiting to hear it directly from Georgia. It would  be better if I was told to get in contact with them, and they said, ‘Yeah, you got an offer.’”
