Stephenson High School tight end Joshua Parris has backed off his commitment to South Florida from two weeks ago.

“There was a misunderstanding,” Parris told the AJC. “I committed to South Florida to play tight end, but they told me recently that they recruited me at fullback. I want to play tight end in college.”

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Parris said he has Ole Miss, Boston College and Vanderbilt as his new leaders, while South Florida “is still in the mix.” He has visited Ole Miss, and will travel to the other schools and announce his college decision by the end of the summer.

Stephenson is a candidate to lead the nation with football prospects signing major-college football scholarships in 2012. The DeKalb County school has 6 players committed to FBS schools (formerly NCAA Div. I-A), with a total of 14-17 projected to sign D1.

RB Mike Davis (Florida)

DT Jafar Mann (Florida)

LB Darreon Herring (Vanderbilt)

DL Carlos Hood (South Carolina)

WR DeMarcus Sweat (Kentucky)

LB Raphael Kirby (Miami)

Note: Stephenson is looking for a team to scrimmage in the preseason.

The player sure has every right to play at the school of his choice. USF will have more wins and rank higher after his 4 year college career than the schools he is considering. But that may not be a factor in his final decision? Good luck wherever you decide.

Apparently Stephenson players would rather get a scholarship too….cause a ton of talent rolls through there with little to show for it. Not a black thing, it’s a fact.

@WorkinDawg, Times have changed, a scholarship is more admirable than a state championship. Sure its nice to have one, but D1 scholarships are the big dream for most kids. And that same mentality can be found in the pros
Look at the NBA Finals, how many other teams are at home watchin? But do you think they’re crying about it or somewhere enjoying their million dollar contracts and endorsments?
Kids would much rather be signing a LOI to play college ball in the fall instead of walking around with a state championship tshirt or ring

How many Stephenson athletes have actually panned out? How many were as good as advertised?

The majority of the players do very well in college and some has gone on to compete on the level. Unfortuantely, we are all human beings. We make poor choices like many of us do and have to live with that choice. Not all Stephenson players have done well. If your asking for a 100% from these players my answer is no. But you opposed a question BMDPD? About 80-85% of the players has gone on to be productive citizens in society. Now if may ask you a question sir. How many kids have you helped out? Evryone is so quick to mention state title in georgia. I think thats all the most of you live for is a state title so you can have some identity to a team. Stephenson Coaches has helped so many kids on and off the field. The coaches has been there for kids when their on parents wasn’t. The coaches has had special interest in young men that has had issues in coping skills. You see it goes further beyond football. At Stephenson it’s not only about football itss’s about life after football, making good decision when no one isn’t around. I tip my hat off to any coach that has special interest in kids, not because they can run & catch a football, but because they know what delimas are out their and traps you can get caught up in. So the next time you folks talk about state titles look on that teams roster and see how many kids got scholarships, attended college, joined the services, or just walking around working at a five & dimes store displaying their STATE TITLE RING!

BMDPD- of all the HIGHLY touted players, seems a DE that went to UF is the only one I can think of that did anything at the next level. I think Lumpkin may still be playing, great kid, never got on track at UGA.

Gwinnett Looze oops Rulez.. Your LAST in your comments. Ok Brookwood won State title. I guess your calming that now. Ok fine… Here we go… Why are some of your players asking for help from Stephenson coaches? I am not talking about Brookwood I am speaking of Gwinnett county in general. Why ask an underachieving program who NO STATE TITLES (AS YOU ALL LIKE TO MENTION) for help from these None-coaching, coaches at Stephensnon? What a minute aren’t these the same coaches that choke in the playoffs? Aren’t these the same coaches that don’t know how to call plays? Aren’t these the same coaches that can’t get out of the playoffs?
Well, well, well isn’t this Irony for you!
There is no reason why a Gwinnett school shouldn’t compete on a year to year bases. Lets look at this for one minute.
Gwinnett gets 8 teams automatically in. It’s not they play each other in the second . They will not meet each other until semi-finals or finals. BIG ADVANTAGE FOR THEM! The majority look at seeding to see what place they come in to get a seed comfortable for them to run the table. Now I’m not saying they do, but I have seen where some teams TANK GAMES in order to get into a bracket that is less competive. If you really want to get techincal on counties in competeing in 5-A for a State Title:
Gwinnett-8
Newton-5
Cobb-5
Dekalb-2
South Ga-7

So out of the 32 team bracket Dekalb county only has 2 representatives while other counties has 4 or more. You do the math. Dekalb county plays UP not DOWN! So when you people start talking state titles look & see where the numbers are skured

People just can’t seem to give credit where credit is due. How about just being honest with yourself for once and admit what a great job they are doing at Stephenson. How much does it cost to be educated at a College/University yearly? Now stop and think how much does the Championship Ring COST and how much is the ring worth? I wonder which one of the two would get you further in life? Let’s all use some common sense!

Anyone know whats up with the STEPHENSON VS. TUCKER Scrimmage?..Last I heard teams were in negotiations about certain items..Has this deal completely fell through? Who may be some of the school names in the hat to face the jags? I believe the Stephenson Tucker game would bring out A LOT of football fans and both programs would benefit greatly from the proceeds at the gate. Anyone have any news on this..WHAT’S GOING ON?!

I graduated from stephenson, and coach gartrell helped me go to a JUCO. When I got hurt he helped me get into UGA were i finished my degree without sports. I am now proud to say that I am working on my masters, and if I would have stayed at South Gwinnett there is no way I would be here. For many african american players on our socieoeconomic level it is important for as many of us to get to college as possible. You can have state. I want productive members of society.

It is not hate. Stephenson has not won a state championship (fact). Stephenson has low test scores (fact). Stephenson is Shiloh’s stepbrother which is not saying too much. Go Brookwood Broncos where our athletes get an outstanding education.

They do sign a lot of players to not win state championships. Thats crazy. I will say Dekalb is the worst county to coach for in the south. Even some of the poopiest counties in SC and FL aren’t as bad. Hey at least they get to keep their Gate and Concessions money right…
Tucker winning state in 2008 is nothing short of amazing trust me. Who knows when another Dekalb team will win it all the way the county is set up.

You want to see how a HS FB program should be run come down here and check out coach Herrin’s program in Camden.Very few D1 players and 3 state title’s in the last decade or so.Coach from Miami Central was quoted in the Miami paper(after we beat em) that Camden was the most diciplined he had ever seen.

well see if you really want to be frank Camden should have won 11 straight
state championships. Everything about Dekalb that I hate Camden has the exact opposite. Everything from them keeping the majority of their gates and concessions, to them never having to worry about kids transferring out, to the allotment of Coaches on their state, to community support, they have EVERYTHING! Camden is the only show in town down there. I went to Georgia Southern so I know about football in that area.
If I was the head coach at Camden I would have won 11 straight state championships. Undefeated too. This is my first year in Dekalb at McNair HS and I have not seen anything like this. We don’t even have a weight training class. I am the Strength coach/DL coach so this is a challenge. If we even make the playoffs thats an accomplishment.

STEPHENSON FINALLY WON STATE BUT IT WASN’T THE COACHING IT WAS THE ATHLETES OR WELL IS ABOUT TIME BECAUSE THEY HAD SO MUCH TALENT COME THROUGH THERE IS CRAZY! WHATEVER YOU WANT TO SAY YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HATE ON STEPHENSON ANAYMORE. WELL AT LEAST THATS WHAT I’M HOPING FOR

My point being is coach Herrin does it with what we have in the way of talent. We have some fine young men that play ball down here but over the years very little in the way of D1 players.Plain and simple its coach Herrins system and getting a sense of football tradition where all the boys aspire to at least tryout for the team and tons of community support.
P.S. We’d wipe the floor with Stephenson
