DeMarcus Sweat commits to Kentucky; Stephenson HS has 7 players committed to D1 schools

Stephenson High School has seven players committed to major colleges, including five to SEC schools.

Wide receiver DeMarcus Sweat committed to Kentucky on Sunday night after attending camp earlier in the day. He said he picked the Wildcats over offers from Indiana, Purdue and Florida International.

Stephenson projects to have 14-17 players sign FBS (formerly Div. I-A) scholarships in February 2012.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Sweat pledged to Kentucky right after performing for the Wildcats coaching staff at camp on Sunday. But he didn’t make it “official” with Kentucky coach Joker Phillips until late Sunday night.

“I told Coach Phillips that I wanted to be a Wildcat,” explained Sweat. “I said I really wanted to talk to my parents first about it, but wanted to go ahead and commit because I didn’t want to lose that spot if another wide receiver committed. Coach Phillips was great about it. He said ‘I know what you’re thinking. Don’t worry about it. We got your scholarship. We’ll hold your spot. Talk to your parents and call me back later.’”

Sweat made the six-hour return trip from Lexington, Ky., to Atlanta by Sunday evening, discussed his college decision with his parents, and was given the greenlight to commit. Sweat caught 12 passes last season in Stephenson’s run-oriented offense.

Stephenson High School is a candidate to lead the nation with players signing major-college scholarships for 2012. Here’s the current list:

RB Mike Davis (Florida)

DT Jafar Mann (Florida)

LB Darreon Herring (Vanderbilt)

DL Carlos Hood (South Carolina)

WR DeMarcus Sweat (Kentucky)

TE Joshua Parris (South Florida)

LB Raphael Kirby (Miami)

Check your data. Stephenson’s student traditionally do well in college academically. Different part of Dekalb than you are used to seeing on TV. Don’t believe the hype buddy. I agree they have a ton of talent and have not produced a state title. I still enjoy hearing the success that Coach G. (who also coached Jeff Saturday of the Colts) continues to have over the years with his football players. Great coach and an even better person. First class program that just haven’t won the big one!

The coaching staff at Stephenson should be highly praised because they continually manage to churn out D1 offers for their players, who in the majority, are not the best in the state. They could probably sell a paper clip for a million dollars because they manage to persuade college recruiters that their players are capable of producing top class D1 performances. The absolute benefit of this is that these kids will be receiving a great post-secondary education at these colleges.

Get sick of hearing about the greatness of Gartrell. Westlake and Stephenson are located in areas that middle class blacks move to during the housing boom. He deserves no credit. These kids are naturally gifted. Gartrell cannot take credit for a kid that runs a 4.4 or a 300lb lineman. That’s the problem with his program. Everyone is so focused on individual goals that they can’t accomplish anything as a team. You don’t get kids in SEC schools they get themselves there. If you are really getting kids in school they go to the SIAC, Gulf South, CIAA and the MEAC. Cut the crap and win something!

i get tired of folks attacking stephenson whenever an article comes up here. concrete rose do some research we send kids everywhere swac meac ciaa siac. what you should do is ask all the hbu’s why they don’t recruit HS kids anymore. they are too busy trying to get a major college transfer kid. try getting the other coaches in georgia to do what our coaches do and that is get 92% of the sr football players into school. like it or not we are setting trends with scholarship opportunities. if you dont like it tough luck because we do it every year and you will continue to hear it and read it.

Yesterday, this young man when to UK and did exactly what he was suppose to do—-GET AN OFFER. He set a goal and accomplished it by proving to the UK staff that he deserved this offer just as ALL other players across the state have done. If other schools want their kids to get exposure, let encourage them to go to college camps. HS coaches get this information and it is all over the internet. Don’t hate Stephenson for taking advantage of public information.

So quit whining about the state championship. It will come. They are winning where it counts. If there was a trophy getting scholarships, there wouldn’t be enough room to put the all at STEPHENSON.

Football is still football. No matter how many D-1 players are on a team, it still has to perform as a TEAM! Stephenson has done a tremendous job in individual acculades for there players, but still has to put it all together to win that State title that will make them the elite status of high school football. I will always support Stephenson because at one point when the school was new everybody wanted to play them so they can get an easy win. Now there are few and far inbetween teams that want to play Stephenson because
1. Don’t want to be embrassed
2. To much talent, speed, and hard hitting defense
Anyway congrats to Demarcus Sweat

BamaDawg UGA has not put in the time to get any of georgia kids let alone Stephenson. they are too busy with out of state targets to recognize the instate talent. UGA targeted 4 kids at stephenson but never really called or talked to them and i am quite sure other prospects around the state would tell the same story.

I love to hear all the Camden and Lowndes folks hate and talk about a title. For those that don’t know the TITLE is a trophy that sits in a case that most of the school could care less about. South georgia kids win all those titles but IF they graduate thats it most times. All the posters talking about winning championships wouldn’t give them a nickel if they saw them on the street corner.

Stephenson kids on the other hand might not win the title because they are more concerned about plyaing on the NATIONAL STAGE to win a national championship or even the SEC or ACC. On top of that they are earning a degree to do something with their lives or possibly go to the NFL.

Its a travesty that communities these days only want their kids to win a state trophy but nothing else.

South Georgia or anyone else dissing Stephenson, how many of your kids are getting scholarships? Lets talk about that.

I want to first say congrats to the kid. However, I want to know what made Kentucky offer the kid a scholarship. He only had 12 catches last season? I know it was a run oriented offense, but so is Georgia Tech’s. Demaryius Thomas and Calvin Johnso had more than 12 cathes. Not trying to compare this kid to those players, but it takes a supreme athlete to get a scholly in that kind of offense. What am I missing?

Congrats to Mr. Sweats, considering the offense SHS runs. I think Stephenson FB players wants to win a championship. We all know that the FB players wants to move on to the next stage. But, they must realize that there are no “I” in TEAM! There are other schools in Dekalb that has won state championships (SWD,Tucker), they also have talented players. Hey BCS and everyone else I doubt your point of view. I happen to be a teacher in the Dekalb school district. I observe and talk to many of these kids( not Stephenson ) from schools around the county. Yea they might talk about it to YOU because thats what YOU want to hear but trust me, Nick Saban beating down your door is way more special to these kids than winning championships.

Even in middle school they are talking about what college they want to go to. Kids in high school are posting what schools they are going to visit on their facebook pages and talking about it in the cafeteria. You must be a parent or one of those old guys in the stands. Kids are not stupid these days. They know what to say and who to say it to. Put yourself in their shoes. Auburn just won a title. Auburn is recruiting you heavily. You honestly think that matters less than a high school trophy.

The difference between them and the kids at Tucker is of course the game plan. I was just trying to make the valid point that these kids have more to live for than winning a high school championship.

BCS all Stephenson has to do is prove it. Otherwise, the proof is in the pudding.

South Gwinnett and stephenson supporter since when does it have to be one or the other? you act like kids that go to college are not allowed to win state championships. You act as if going to Div 1 college on a scholarship and winning a state championship can’t “both” be accomplished. 1st it would seem obvious that kids from Decalb County are going to Stephenson because they are getting all of the Div 1 headlines. If that’s the only way you can get it done, then congrats on finding a way, if it is ever done. You obviously have a good recruiter of a head coach now get yourself a drill sargeant type to whip that talent into a team (if they didn’t all quit first).

Quit making excuses for something you don’t know about. Winning state championships are fantastic and your kids “do” want it bad. The question is do they want it “bad enough”? Plus, I never saw a Div 1 coach say we don’t have a scholarship for you kid now that you just won a state championship.

How about turning that talent into a team for a change.
No excuses this year. I’ll be watching. The state of Georgia will
be watching and now even the whole nation is watching.

I hear so much bashing on SHS program and kids? Are you serious people? Yo, Fat Boy & All About Six. Let me be crystal clear on what I am about to say. When Gwinnett county schools was winning everything from swimming to tennis titles no one didn’t say anything. When Parkview was a powerhouse, Lowndes, Camden, Valdosta, Brookwood, etc no one said anything. Why? Because winning superseeded everything it didn’t matter if the kids were black or white. About 7 or 8 years ago people are starting to come back to their respected areas where their kids have a chance to get some kind of scholarship. Three years ago Stephenson had a record setting 29 scholarships 6 NFL Players, and ototal of 70 plus kids playing division 1 football somewhere. Now you would think that would make other programs step up to do more for there programs but from what i seen was just the opposite. Instead of complaining about what SHS is doing why can’t your PTA, AD, or even your head coach ask what is SHS doing that we can’t do? Now let me be clear on this Parents now realize after there football season is over with at some schools IT’S REALLY OVER! NO SCHOLARSHIPS, NO RECRUITMENTS, NO NOTHING! Don’t think parents don’t talk and read what is happening at SHS. When you get 29 scholarships and these are not starters on the team what does that say about the recruitment? What it says is these college scouts know how hard SHS practice and play. Don’t you think that even the ones who did not start can transfer to any school and start on any other team program? these scouts know that SHS football payers starters and non starters are football ready to play and are eleigble to play immediately. So when you all start talking State Titles remember you are champion for that year but when you get a scholarship you are a champion for 4 years when you receive that degree. Trust when I say this, head coaches don’t fly from the West coast for nothing to see what Stephenson High School is doing. It must be something right they are doing. Just look up any roster in FBS and I promise you will see high school played STEPHENSON HIGH SCHOOL in STONE MOUNTAIN, GA.
