Ryan Harrow picks Kentucky over UGA, others

NC State basketball transfer Ryan Harrow committed to Kentucky over UGA, Louisville, and Texas on Wednesday night, via Twitter.

“I am a Kentucky Wildcat!” said Harrow, who played at Walton High School.

The 6-foot point guard will have to sit out next season and have three years of NCAA eligibility.

As a freshman at NC State last season, Harrow averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists. He decided to transfer after the coaching change. At Kentucky, John Calipari has an amazing run of recruiting elite point guards the last two years with John Wall and Brandon Knight.

I saw him ball and he played soft. Going to get burried on the bench at UK! Should have been a Dawgs if he wanted PT and a chance to grow into an baller

I didn’t see that Kentucky offered him. He made a fine choice.
It’d be nice if UGA could grab that UCF decommit now that the options are less plentiful though.

No luck for UGA in the recruiting front in either sport lately. Hopefully Kevin Ware will commit and Coach Fox can help him with his ball handling ability. From what I read he is a freakish good athlete but has problems with being the primary ball handler. Either way we need him. Come on Kevin commit and become a DAWG!

He is smart to go to a program that will give him the maximum amount of visibility. He no doubt is looking to the NBA as his future employer and I say, you go young man. UGA, Texas, and even Louisville, are not usually in the same league as Kentucky in BB, so he chose the school where he could shine the most. Don’t hate the kid, because he is probably making the right decision.

It is correct that more players that play at Kentucky go to the NBA, however if he has to sit a year and Calipari pulls one of his top 3 classes for the third straight year then he won’t start. Coach Fox can get him to the NBA and would have given him immediate playin time possibly even been a starter. No doubt that Kentucky is more prestigious when it comes to College Basketball, but just like football, if your buried on the depth chart behind other 5 star recruits then he won’t get noticed.

Good grief, Mark Fox better go as soon as he gets the opportunity. He simply cannot close. This kid was tailor-made for UGA and Fox lost him to a used car selling shyster at a school where Harrow will never see a minute of playing time. Pitiful.

Should have gone to Georgia. By the time he suits up for UK, he will have been recruited over by a one-and-done type PG. See Rose, Evans, Wall, Knight.

Yes, those who criticize the decision truly have no clue. If Harrow chooses to strive for the NBA, you go to Georgia?
Davey Boy, wow.

Caliper is on a roll right now, and pushing for guys to go to the next level. Donovan gets it done…why not Fox? So far, he has proven he can bring in enough talent to field a team. He’ll get a couple more years to prove he can recruit, but he better pick it up. He’s lagging behind.

Harrow is a decent player, but he is not even in remotely the same class as Rose, Knight, Evans or Wall. Calipari will recruit a couple more PG’s of that ilk while Harrow is there and he will never be more than a backup.

UGA is losing both guards after this season, and Harrow would have immediately come in and start.

The fact that Fox cannot convince a kid to come to Athens, especially with all of the obvious facts in order to back him up, shows that the guy just cannot recruit. This should have been an absolute no-brainer of a situation, with it being so obvious as to wonder why it would take more than a couple of days to get done, and Fox still blew it.

If Fox cannot pull a top 10 class with the plethora of in-state seniors in this upcoming class, it will have become clear that he will never be able to achieve anything more than mediocre results.

Fox needs to hire an assistant who is great at recruiting. I cannot remember the assistant that Durham had when he was at UGA but the guy could recruit.

I understand any basketball player picking UK over UGA, but sometimes UGA might be the best situation. Harrow must have not considered that UK just signed Jeff Teague’s brother who many have said is better than Jeff. Plus, UK has offered (and lead) the best PG prospect in the 2012 class. Good luck to Harrow at UK, but just remember you could have been the starting PG at UGA in 2012 with little competition. At UK you will have a tough battle getting PT.

UGA vs KY…come on you must be kidding for BB! If KY wants a player then 99% of the time they will get them with the tradition they have in BB plus ole John recruit better than 99% as well.

Sad part is if UK wins the national title in 2011-2012(I know UNC is loaded too), it is better than even money bet that Cal will consider his work done and will try the NBA again and Harrow may never play for him.

I, personally, would feel better about myself if I committed to UGa and Cox Fox over KY and CALIPARI; Calipari talks more than Mac Brown, and is super sleazy on top of that. Mac Brown is in my mind a trustworthy man compared to Cal. And, Ky bb fans are worse than UGa fb fans when it comes to being open-minded.

Seriously, any Dawg fans complaining if we lose a recruit to a top 5 program should get a grip. The fact that we even got Marcus Thornton last year to come to UGA over UK was a minor miracle.

In football, it’s exactly the opposite. If UGA wants a player and their chief competition is UK, the Dawgs will (9 out of 10 times) get that player – it’s reverse in hoops. Rupp Arena is double the size of the Stegasaurus and in Lexington, they treat their hoops players the way Bama & Auburn treat football players. nuff said. Not a big deal.

It was a no brainer to pick any of those schools in basketball over uga especially Kentucky.

Uga plays in a dump, the basketball practice facilities are not that good and basketball players are virtually unknowns in Athens. At UK they have 23,000 seat Rupp Arena which always sells out and practically a brand new practice facility that is one of the nicest if not the nicest in college basketball. Plus Harrow will be an instant celebrity in Lexington even if does ride the pine. Harrow has to sit out this coming season since transfering. Asumming our incoming freshman PG Teague goes one and done Harrow will start in 2012. The main reason UK wanted Harrow is because the 2012 class is relative weak at the PG position.

It’s amazing to reveiew some of the ignorant comments that some
people make here. Get rid of Fox ? Yeah, sure – then we can bring back
Dennis Felton or maybe Ron Jirsa. An NCAA tourney team in two years,
all of the seniors graduate on time (Hear that Techites ?), and a facility
that truly has a chance to become Cameron Indoor Stadium, part II. He’s
doing just fine, thank you very much. Leave him the hell alone and we can
turn our attention to the football team which may or may not be competitive.
On the other hand, any school that would like to have that silly balloon
dawg that hangs around Stegemen, please come pick him/her/it up. THX !

He’d rather be on the bench at UK than start at UGA. This is becuase he actually wants to play in primetime and make it the NBA one day. He gets to go up against the best players in the country in practice everyday. Great decision Ryan, stick to 3 and 4 star recruits UGA. You can have our left overs.

KevinM

UGA is never the team to beat for a ball recruit. How many times will Kevin Ware have to turn down Fox? This would be the 3rd time. Is Fox that desperate to STILL take Ware?

It’s obvious the ball players are nowhere near as respected as football players and lots of these guys want to play at a basketball school, be on TV all the time, and have a chance at the next level.

Fox hasn’t provided that foundation yet. Perhaps he will. He has a big fan in Charles Barkley.

Doggone you are quite obviously an idiot with no clue. The Georgia Bulldog athletic programs as a whole is as good as any and a dang site better than most. While the football team is climbing out of the gutter, the baseball and basketball teams are on the rise. The tennis and golf teams in most years are in the hunt for the national titles. Girls softball is getting stronger and stronger every year and they are already pretty darn good. The swimming teams are top of the line and I will take it, that is if you know anything about GA sports, I shouldn’t have to tell you about the gymnastics squad. The girls basketball team while not up to standards by what they are use to being, still is pretty decent. So when it comes to your knowledge of Georgia sports you are obviously dumn as a rock.

i just hope that Coach Fox’s first success and then “not so much” was via and for the most part because of the influence and then departure of his former assistant, Pope. Pope was a big influence on the performance of our dogs while he was here. Now the enthusiasm and aggressiveness that the team showed early on in Fox’s team(s) is simply not there.

Kentucky has 13 players currently in the NBA, Louisville has 5

Why the Headline “ex N C State guard passes on UGA”? Why not simply “Former NC St and Walton star chooses Kentucky” The AJC simply CANNOT pass up an opportunity to take a swipe at The University of Georgia, shameful.

I see you are continuing your ways Carvell. UGA. Yet he chose Kentucky, why not UK? If you are going to use acronym and initials for Georgia, could you try to be consistent. Kentucky – UK, Georgia Tech – GT, Tennessee – UT, Auburn – AU, Alabama – UA, Florida – UF.

Hey Say, come back in 2 years and let’s revisit and see if Cal makes Ryan a legit PG? Odds are he probably will…we have a 5 star athlete about to put in 2 years for 1 year of college basketball practicing against Marquis Teague all year.
