VIDEO: Josh Holsey commits to Auburn over UGA, LSU and Virginia Tech (UPDATED)

Creekside’s Josh Holsey, one of Georgia’s top defensive backs for 2012, said Auburn was second to none after committing to the SEC school on Tuesday.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound cornerback picked Auburn over UGA, LSU and Virginia Tech among his 24 early scholarship offers.

“I just thought it was the right school for me to go to and pursue my future, and do what I want to do in life and be the best person I can be,” Holsey told the AJC. “Auburn is the right place for me to go.”

Who finished runner-up for Holsey? “I really don’t know. I’ve had my mind set on Auburn for a minute so … Auburn was 1-4.”

What about UGA? The Bulldogs were his childhood favorite but the last to offer out of 24 schools. “They were serious contenders. I figured they recruited me too late. I wasn’t able to get over there and talk to the coaches as much as I did at Auburn.”

Holsey said he committed early because he wanted to shift his focus to his senior year of football at Creekside.

Creekside coach Johnny White said Holsey was “the best we’ve had since Eric Berry.” Holsey has 19 career interceptions, including 9 last year as a junior.

The nightmare continues. We lose another top CB to an out of state opponent. No matter what people say. The recruiting looks really bad for 2012. We continue to come in late on offers and the approach is costing us big time. Recruiting is a year around thing, not just one cycle. We are falling way behind on the talent level, but just win and it will change everything. Congrats to the young man and I hope he has a stellar career at AU. Looks like a tough CB but looks like our talent evaluating is really lagging behind.

1eyedjack,

Lateness is relative. When you have a top notch recruit come to your school, knowing you are his childhood favorite, you offer the guy when you have the chance. Not 10 days before he’s supposed to announce. By any reasonable measure, that’s late.

Here we go again, another instate kid who chooses to go out of state. Way to go CMR, what do you say about for this one? Why are you continueing to miss these kids who say that they “heard from you late in their decision process”? Do you even care, or is there an excuse again. This was low hanging fruit again, is your head really in the game? Most schools would love the chance to be able to recruit these kids and you cannot even get out of your chair to see them or offer a scholarship. Once again, a Bride’s Maid. Enough Said.

He wasn’t offered by Ga. Southern, Wofford or Furman, so Johnson probably didn’t offer him either.

Saw this kid play numerous times, I have no idea why UGA was late to offer? He is a ball hawk, if LSU and AU want him bad and UGA comes in late something is wrong in my opinion. He is also a good kid with a great family, very odd UGA offered late. Is Garner getting lazy in his old age? UGA can slam all these other schools but LSUs/Bamas/AU are winning NC

I believe recruits know that this could be the end of Mark Richt at Georgia. Still a long way until February but I believe if the #8 under the win column for 2011, then Mark Richt and staff will be blown out.

Georgia enthusiasts can spin it anyway they want to but everyone knows where the program is right now and it’s not on strong footing.

Dillon Lee chose the school with the more heralded defense, better DC, and recent history of developing more NFL talent. And I’m a UGA fan admitting that.

This is really getting concerning i know it a small class and we are saving them for certain positions but this is heat breaking to see this happening like for UGA and Georgia Tech .

Only 5′9 180. I think Grantham wants taller corners and that might be why UGA offered so late. We need DBs to be taller like LSU because receivers in this league are getting huge. 6′5, 6′3 WRs against a 5′9 guy? Jump ball all day. Best of luck to him at Auburn. He’ll get to play immediately. We’ll see ya in the second week of Nov.

Dawg Gone, I simply implied that you are speaking negatively of a coach because he hasn’t gotten a chance to compete yet. Seriously? Do you really think he and he staff will come in and do a poor job? Is he one of the worst coaches in the SEC because he hasn’t won a game yet? Were you one of the guys who hoped UGA would fire Richt and bring him in, and for your personal vendetta, you decided to hate him since he went to Florida? Come on dude. I simply stated that his body of work shows that he understands his X’s and O’s and to think negatively of him before he coaches a game is foolish. You are correct that he has not won a game as the head coach of Florida. But if you think that streak will last long, you will be sorely disappointed.

Huh? Nope I never meant he would be a bad coach, but its a stretch to think he will be the second coming of CUM..and a LOT of Gator fans are looking for that. How many assistant coaches never make it as a HC? Answer…a lot of them. Oh and by the way I have never said I wanted CMR gone..I remember the 20 year SEC title drought..now another 6-6 or worse year with no concrete signs of improvement and I think he is gone….but he has a stellar record over 10 years…so a couple of down years are allowed..think if the Gators go 7-5 a couple of season CWM will still be head of Gator Nation?

The wisdom of Gator FAN: “uga will start 0-2 and lose to mississippi state and the GATORS for sure and will lose one or two games to tennessee, ole miss, auburn and tech….. just do not see anything in this team or its coach. oline will be poor again this year which means mediocre running game. db’s athletic but stupid (see arkansas, florida, colorado and auburn losses).”

You live in a glass house. The same poor analysis can be made for UF this season: “UF will lose to Alabama and LSU for sure and will lose one or two games to Tennessee, Auburn, UGA, USC and Florida State….. just do not see anything in this team or its new coach. oline will be poor again this year which means mediocre running game. db’s athletic but stupid (see UT, UK, LSU, UGA, FSU and Penn St games) and their rush defense is horrible (see USF, Bama, LSU, Miss St, USC).”

Just how good was UF’s O-line last year? Was Brantley firing bullets from his cozy pocket all day long…do his numbers reflect a dominant line presence? And how did the Gator DBs represent last year? They gave up more receptions and receiving TDs than UGA’s unit.

Go home.

Dawg Gone, I don’t see the Gators going 7-5 the next few years, with the talent they have, and the lack of talent in the rest of the SEC East. And plus, you have to figure he has at least three years to get the team moving in a positive direction. Michigan gave Rich Rod three years and they went nowhere, resulting in his firing.

I don’t believe this kid announced 10 days ago that he would make his decision 5/24/2011. Good for him if that is what he wants. With only 12 scholarships left to offer for 2012, I think the DAWGS are being prudent and I don’t fault them for not offering earlier. He is fast, but he is also only 5′9″ and 180 Lbs., so I can understand the cautiousness of the coaching staff. We have offered 5 other CB’s so far, so we will probably get one of those. Not to worry, it is 9 months until signing day. Who is to say, that the state of Georgia doesn’t have a few CB’s that will be much improved and rise up their senior year of high school. It is also worth noting that these guys that have committed early could change their minds half a dozen times if circumstances change or they want to go with their buddies or half a dozen other reasons. I will worry if UGA doesn’t have a solid recruit to sign so, oh about Jan. 15th, 2012.

I am tired of reading UGA bashing. Most of those who write comments never got past 9th grade football. Regardless of all the hype, athletes need to go where they want to go. All schools and all players are better off if an individual truly wants to wear their school colors.

If I were a High School athlete, and I saw many of these postings from “Georgia fans”, I would think Georgia fans were immature, needy, and unrealistic. So if you want to harm UGA recruiting, continue to write in the same vane as in the past.

If the coaching staff does a good job, we will be fine.

Please note – A majority of NFL players today were not 4 or 5-star recruits coming out of High School.

The kid had 19 career interceptions , runs the 40 in 4.3 but yet you wanted him to Audition. Then you come in late an say he doesn’t have to audition. Then you have UGA fans making up excuses for their program. So keep recruiting the way you recruit and wait on these so-called 4 and 5 star. Players whom you can’t win with or make a BCS appearance with and the rest of the will continue invade your State an get all your recruit, because you think the players are not good enough to wear Black and Red but Fla. , LSU, Auburn , and Ala. Teams that have won NCS does. Combats goes out to Mr. Bodley and his family
