Dillon Lee is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1-ranked college football prospect at linebacker for 2012.

He’s also the younger brother of UGA offensive lineman Dallas Lee.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Buford High School confirmed to the AJC that he will announce on Monday whether he will join his brother with the Bulldogs — or commit to one of his three other finalists of Alabama, Florida State and USC.

Here’s Lee on Wednesday night with quick hits on his final four:

  • Florida State: “I really like the campus and whole environment there in Tallahassee.”
  • Alabama: “I really like what they do on defense. I like their defensive coaches and the defensive system they have.”
  • Southern Cal: “That has been my favorite team growing up … my whole life.”
  • UGA: “That’s my in-state school. My brother plays there. My whole family is Georgia fans, and I’ve been going to games there my whole life. I know a lot about them, and I’ve been trying to get to know the new linebackers coach since he was hired.”

Lee has accumulated nearly 20 offers; ironically, UGA was most recent, despite the family ties. Georgia linebackers coach, Kirk Olivadotti, called Lee with an offer from the Bulldogs on May 2. Georgia hired the former NFL assistant on Feb. 18.

Dillon Lee (Special)

What took UGA so long? Lee isn’t really sure, but said he is “not offended” by the timing. “Georgia has a great program and it is an honor to get offered by them. They had a coaching change with the linebackers coach. With a new coach coming in, I guess it slowed down their whole recruiting process at the position. I’ve been doing my best to get to know Coach Olivadotti, and help him catch up with everything going on with me.”

What about playing with his brother? And has Dallas been recruiting on behalf of the Bulldogs? “My brother is my best friend, and he has always told me to make the best decision for me. I don’t feel any pressure on me to pick Georgia just because my brother plays there. He has been very supportive through the whole recruiting process, and he said he will support whatever choice I make.”

Lee didn’t offer any hints on his college choice, but it would appear that Florida State and Alabama are the frontrunners. Lee has made numerous recruiting trips to both schools, he’s never made an unofficial visit to USC, and Georgia was the last in his stack of offers.

The only thing Lee would say about Monday is that he’s ready to get it over with. “I met with my head coach [Buford's Jess Simpson] and talked to him. I’m his player, so I run everything before by him before I do anything. I told him ‘I am getting close with a coupe of schools and I feel like I’m about to make a decision.’ He advised me to think about it for a few days and then set a date. We decided on May 16th because we’ll be over with spring practice at Buford.”

Lee is one of at least six major-college prospects at Buford, including two other elite prospects at their respective positions — offensive lineman Vadal Alexander and tight end Kurt Freitag. Buford is a dynasty in Georgia high school football, winning four consecutive state championships and counting.

  • As expected, UGA coach Mark Richt got bombared with questions at Wednesday’s Bulldog Club meeting in Greenville, S.C., about the headliner of his 2011 recruiting class, 5-star tailback Isaiah Crowell. However, perhaps overlooked were Richt’s comments on fellow recruit Nick Marshall of Wilcox County. The All-State QB signed with UGA as a defensive back (in part, to play for UGA’s basketball team, too). It appears Marshall will see time at QB in college, too. Richt told Macon.com’s Seth Emerson that Marshall might see some time on offense as a quarteback in the team’s Wildcat formation — or “Wild Dog” formation, as Richt called it. “We’d stick Washaun back there or Caleb back there. It’s nothing like having a Nick Marshall back there. That’s not out of the realm of possibilities.”
  • NC State transfer Ryan Harrow finished his official visit to Kentucky on Wednesday, and said on Twitter that he will arrive at Texas on Thursday. The point guard from Walton High School has those two among his finalists, along with UGA, Louisville and St. John’s.

If Dillon wants to play linebacker there is only one school with better tradition
then Alabama and that is Penn St. So hope he picks the crimson tide and
best of luck where ever he goes. RTR

UGA has some FAST catching up to do because it certainly does not sound like UGA is in the mix…..BUT his parents can watch them BOTH play EVERY Saturday. That should be a consideration that could trump the other schools….maybe, maybe not.

Both seem pretty pathetic.

“We play a pro-style offense and defense and have that kind of program, but we also teach our players. Some people protect their players and kind of coddle them. We get criticized sometimes — we support our players in every way and we have a great staff, and I’m talking about a great support staff as well — but we have a set of principles and values that are going to help our players be successful. We support them in that, but then they’re also responsible for their own self-determination. So when they get to the independence of the NFL, they can handle it and they can manage it because they’re not shocked by it.”

Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, receiver Julio Jones and running back Mark Ingram were projected first-round picks, but offensive lineman James Carpenter — projected to go no earlier than the second round — also joined them in the first round at No. 25 to Seattle. Carpenter was the Crimson Tide’s second surprise first-rounder in as many years, following cornerback Kareem Jackson, a 2010 first-round selection of the Houston Texans.

“(Carpenter) was really kind of a second-round guy, but because the guy played guard very well in the Senior Bowl, I think his versatility as a player elevated his value,” Saban said. “You only have eight offensive linemen for a game in the NFL, and somebody’s got to be able to play more than one spot.”

After reading the quotes from this young man, it is apparent to the most casual observer that he’s very intelligent. Georgia fans that have sense just have to know that witnessing a kid with this kind of smarts, will not select Georgia for that very reason. He’s smart, plays football at a high level and comes from a county, Gwinnett, where the competition is high and the players, coaches and parents know that Georgia has become a grease fire and that’s why so many talented players no longer go to Georgia. When the change comes in Athens at the top, the players will once again be serious in considering Georgia. Right now, there’s nothing about Mark Richts program that is attractive to players that have any football sense.

Just another example of how pathetic Richt and his coaching staff really are. How could UGA wait until May to offer possibly the top player in it’s own state. Oh i forgot, McGarity told Richt to take a vacation the week after national signing day. Think his quote was you and your staff deserve it. That is the problem with McGarity and RIcht. While Saban and his puppet Kirby Smart were all over the state of Ga. the week after signing day getting commitments and visiting kids, Richt and his clowns were on vacation resting. UGA will never come close to beating Bama while Saban is there, and UGA will be a middle of the pack SEC team as long as the clown Richt is there. This class will be one of the worst classes UGA has had in the past 10 years. Same thing happened in 2007. UGA had just finished with a top 10 class in 2006, and only signed 2 of the top 10 in state players in 2007, because Richt and his buddies sat back and rested. These idiots don’t realize recruiting is a 365 day job. Richt&McGarity=Dumb&Dumber!!

What took Georgia so long? Have you seen their track record with Buford players. When a Buford LB, DL or OL perform, then they will be the first. And don’t give me Omar Hunter and his career 40 tackles and ZERO sacks. Buford is a AA school with a AAAAA facility which gives them stronger teams than the AA which in turn makes their linemen and linebackers stick out more. Signed Jack Lynn

Sick and Tired, you are aware UGA is 1-1 against Saban’s Tide. So to say they will never get close to beating them is absurd. Lee stated from the get go he wanted to go to school out of state. Everyone is concerned about UGA’s tardiness to offer. This kid is still studying for the his junior-year final exams. he was offered 10 months prior to signing day. 80% of our 2012 signing class will have been offered after him. Most kids i know don’t even mature pyshically until they are about 18 years old.

that being said, we also have a new LB coach – which hinders the system. Complicate that with the fact he is from the NFL and lacks college experience (they don’t recruit in the NFL – so that has be learned) and we have a huge disadvantage at LB suddenly. Look at Grantham’s recruiting classes between 2010 and 2011 – it improved signifcantly.

Now walk with me here,,,that’s 10 years at Georgia for your boy Mark……..6 National Championships in those 10 years have come out of the SEC……..Now here’s the good part….4 Different TEAMS have won those Championships. Let’s say them Together in Alphabetical order…..ALABAMA, AUBURN, FLORIDA, LSU. Notice a team missing there? A team I don’t know let me guess….GEORGIA………..if you can just get up off your blind loyalist knees for just a microsecond you’ll realize that Mark Richt has led the nation in only one thing….arrests and sadly the Fulmer Cup isn’t something that you really want to win…..to win crystal footballs you need to be at ….let’s say it one more time ALABAMA, AUBURN, FLORIDA OR LSU. Heck it’s time for a raise since he signed a good recruiting class, don’t you think?

From what I’ve heard once Dallas signed with Georgia
it was a given that Dillon was coming. The uga coaching

Dillon was a Bulldog so they didn’t recruit him as hard

Dynasty? Gimme a BREAK. They have won titles because they control their numbers to stay down in the lower leagues. They know they can pick and choose who transfers there. They are a city school and have it better than private schools. There tuition is minimal and can choose who they allow to attend school there. Dontcha think that any AA schools with that many D1 prospects over the last 15 years has found loopholes that they are exploiting? Playing in AA with a stacked hand like they have gets little respect. Play up you buncha sissies. Every other public school in Gwinnett County is there. They would no have won a single title in AAAA and probably none in AAAA. They have superior talent with “adequate” coaching in the bush leagues.

I recall just a few short years ago how Mark Richt was the man and how he was gonna be the one who will get them to the top again. It was the same story with Goff and Donnan until they could not meet the unrealistic expectations that Georgia fans have. Until Georgia fans relize that the program never has been and never will be a top tier program (and yes even when Prince Vince was there for 25 years they could not stay among the top for more then a few years) this whinning by UGA fans will continue. Wake up Bulldog Nation your a second tier program just except it and know that is your place in college football.

Let me taste those tears. Hate on FSU all you want. Our coaches are working hard on the trail, and it shows. Unlike UGA who got their Dream Team and relaxed, we signed the #1 recruiting class in the nation last year and started grinding on the trail again the next day. Our ‘12 class is shaping up to be better than our ‘11 class. I think Dillon Lee commits to Bama. He wants to be in a base 3-4 We still have a shot though. Would be a monster ILB in Mark Stoops defense. Clemons on the other hand, is coming to FSU.

@Any truth to the rumors lol FSU will win the next two ACC titles at least. Bank on it…

Why does UGA always wait until the last min. to offer the top high school kids in Ga ? This always puts us behind the eight ball every year.

FSU? Why they suck, have since 1999. Yea Georgia has problems, but for a couple years, not a decade. Come on dude, pick Athens, better education, better women, closer to home. Easy choice.

Atl Nole,

You beat the SEC champ in a pretty much down year for the SEC East. Do it consistently to the SEC east champ for a few years and you have something to brag about. Better even, what is your 10 year record against Florida? How about the SEC as a whole? One good year out of about 10 and you think you are instantly the pride of the south. Come on over to a real conference and play SEC teams week in and week out. Winning the ACC is not on the level of winning the SEC.

The See Me Noles don’t have a proven QB. Like at Notre Dame – their time has passed.

Who is that imposter that posed as me? He is right about one thing. Noles don’t have a QB and this will be another 9-5 mediocre season. But I wouldn’t rule them out in the future.

Hey SICKANDTIRED, we are SICKANDTIRED hearing your negative crap all the time. You take all the coaches we have had since Vince Dooly and Coach Richt has a better record his 1st 10 years than any of the 3 prior coaches. Yes we haven’t won a national championship but we got screwed 2 years in the system. We could have beaten Miami or OSU in 2002 or we could have won it the year we played Hawaii, but we didn’t get the break we needed. Make some noise in Sanford stadium so it can be the place it used to be, somewhere the other teams were scared to play at. Instead they think its a home game for them because our so called true fans don’t know how to make any NOISE. The 70’s & 80’s it was a tough place to play, alot louder than it is today, its really sad. What we need to do is support our HC, his staff & our players. We could really have someone alot worse, especially if SICKANDTIRED is involved with the selection. I guarantee there are a number of premium schools that would love to have Richt and his staff. Our defense will be alot better, Murray will be better & hopefully our OL will be better. So why don’t you go back on the set on Grumpy Old Men or back wherever people like you live & breed. Also when you learn something about recruiting please let us know, these kids all want to be in the spotlight, so its not as easy as YOU think. So I hope you have a great day & lets see if you can say something nice, I doubt it.

No, you’re right. FSU doesn’t have the # 2 rated prep QB out of the ‘08 class, who is a redshirt junior and led the Noles to victories in our past 2 bowl games. lol

I’ll bet he is not even sure yet which school he will attend. This kid doesn’t appear to be one of those media hungry attention kids so I am betting he is taking the time to think it through. I would like to see him in a DAWG uniform but if he choses another school, I feel pretty sure he will have made the decision based on what he feels is best for him. I don’t think all the hype and coaches promises will sway the kid.

Bama Fan#2,

I am kind of thinking thats where he might land also. I don’t think he necessarily feels any obligation to go to UGA or any SEC school based on family loyalty. I just hope he choses what is the best fit for him based on what he wants to achieve. Hope he wants a good education as his first priority.
