The recruiting of Isaiah Crowell by UGA assistant Bryan McClendon

This was an interesting recruiting read about UGA football assistant Bryan McClendon, who signed 5-star tailback Isaiah Crowell of Carver-Columbus High School for Georgia’s 2011 recruiting class. The article was written by one of my colleagues, Dean Legge, the publisher of DawgPost — the website that covers UGA for Scout and FOXSports.com.

Here’s an except (go here to read the full article):

McClendon, officials at Georgia have told me, was offered other jobs – almost certainly in January – when recruiting was in full swing. Losing him to another school at that moment would have been a brutal blow to Georgia’s chances of signing Isaiah Crowell.

Of the staff at Georgia, McClendon was uniquely qualified to recruit Crowell. McClendon is a young black man coaching at the place he played at. In America race is always a touchy subject, but one can hardly forget that McClendon has a unique perspective about Georgia. He can tell recruits exactly what its going to be like to be a black football player at Georgia… he knows about it… he’s lived it.

That’s not at all to say that McClendon’s value is in his skin color – that would be simplistic and ignorant – and would also gloss over the fact that he had to claw and scratch to get the top recruit in the South to sign with Georgia. He had to do all of that while not appearing to claw and scratch… something that is very, very difficult to do. McClendon signed Crowell not because of the hue of his skin, but because he did the best job recruiting him – period.

On Signing Day I handed Brian McClendon a cover of what was the upcoming Dawg Post the Magazine with Crowell on the cover. He smiled.

“Man, that looks good,” he said – eyes exhausted from worry over the recruiting wars of 2011.

The bump in pay probably looks good, too.

So the guy rolled Crowell into a pay raise… big woop. Crowell was all UGA from the start.. and I highly doubt race played a part in that decision.

One thing is sure, there is no way that any coach at Ga out-recruited any coach at Alabama, right, Blackout. Face it, Ga won the battle for Crowell, Jenkins and many more.

Get used to it because Ga is on it’s way back and after Saban again fails to finish ahead or LSU and Arkansas, it will be Saban who’s on the hot seat.

Let me get this right. This young running backs coach has a stable of backs that have issues, as they do not know how to run to the hole, they fall when ankle tackled, fumble in key situations, have academic issues, fallen in trouble with the law repetitively, and are not respectful of team rules. We give a raise on what? A hope that this next kid from a school that has exposed it’s self as a hot bed of thieves via on campus thefts at UGA, and we pay a coach for what? He should be fired! Crowell has not done a thing YET! The running backs coach gets a F the last two years, a nice article because we feel sorry for little old UGA, and our HC tells the South how great he is as a coach. Is anyone paying attention that MR is reaching for relief. Let’s puff it up so we can sell more tickets and feel good about ourselves. The coach is not a quality coach because he brought in a black athlete and he himself is a black coach. Please tell me what the heck is going in Athens? Greg pay attention!!!!!!!!!!

trupert… If Jenkins had a UA offer I’m not aware of it. He certainly wasn’t heavily recruited by the UA staff. That doesn’t mean he want be an All SEC player but it does mean part of your first post was complete bunk. Bama unveiled Saban’s statue in the walk of champions at A-day… your coach is coming off a 6-7 season so what was that you were saying about a hot seat? As for out recruiting Bama coaches. LOL These are instate Georgia kids. I certainly hope UGA “out recruits” and wins most of these battles with out of state schools.

Saban wanted Jenkins. His JC coach, the same one that had Cody, said he expects Jenkins to have the same results at Ga that cody had at Bama. No need in going after Jenkins when you can’t get him, so yes, saban knew he was beat and never offered.

Blackout, What’s your point? You don’t think Saban will be on the hot seat after he finishes third in the West? Fourth last year, third this year and that seat will start to heat up. How long before some drunk Bama fan hooks that statue up to his pick up truck with a chain?

RRTDawgs…. glad to hear from you. This is such a slow time for recruiting but it looks like Chip’s replacement Michael Carvell will keep the UGA/GT fan bases happy.. I think this was his 93rd straight article on those two fine programs in the “College Recruiting” section. I guess other schools are not actively recruiting in the state of Georgia. Crazy I know. Anyway are you hearing of any academic casualties to the incoming UGA class? I think Richt is pretty solid on only offering kids that are locks to qualify. Barring any more injuries to the O-line… I’m holding strong with my prediction: Alabama vs Georgia 2011 SEC Championship game.

trupert… I respect the UGA fan base too much to waist a lot of time hurling insults back at you. Your uneducated posts speak for themselves. Instead I will take it upon myself to help/educate you. Saban = 2009 National Champion. In 2010 Bama was 1 play (4th and 1 at LSU) and any one of several plays vs Auburn (Ingram’s fumble that rolled 20yds in bounds and through the endzone/Richardson’s dropped TD pass/Bama offsides on 4th and 1/Bama offsides when AU was flagged for pass int. in the end zone) away from playing for back to back National Championships last year. So I’m going to go with no. I don’t think Nick Saban is on the hot seat and I can’t fathom any scenario that would lead to such rubbish..nonsense. @Blackoutanyone?………You sir sound like a pretty intelligent and possibly pragmatic college football fan…….Agreed, the Auburn game was one of those games that you had to just cringe, had it won, if not for “‘ol lady luck” just wasn’t with you that game……..just like the times we missed playing for the MNC at least a couple times in the last five years. Me? college football is a game of cycles, particularly with the “big” football schools. I am a Georgia BULLDOG, at the same time a supporter of SEC football……..Congratulations on your recent success at Alabama, it was Florida before you, and before that LSU [could have been us]………Luck does play a role, really in a big way in in the SEC………remember when Cody blocked that fg attempt by Tenn.? Pretty lucky swat if you ask me. Talent, luck, and imo chemistry are the big three in my book………Look around, Arkansas is on the way-up, so is Miss.St. South Carolina……..but those won’t last long. If Georgia can turn the corner this year, they will be back for some time to come. If not, well it might take a while……..but don’t underestimate Tenn,…….something about them scares me, and by the way, they will be back in a big way, the question is when? I’m sure you remember those down years at Alabama before you got Saban……Sure hope ours don’t last that long…….This year? Hell, anything could happen in the SEC……..I just hope we can turn it around, and our Tide cousins to the west can handle that daunting schedule……….Hope you’re right mister………sure would be fun to meet you guys in Atlanta…………Regards, RED

Bama doesn’t need luck to win a national championship, we do it with skill. Also, we don’t hire coaches based on their race. We hire them based on how (Kirby) Smart they are. If UGA wants to give opportunities to young minority coaches, that’s their business.

I cannot imagine what any coach could say to a black recruit except you can run wild in Athens. Recruiting black football players starts with allowing his high school teammates to clean out the UGA player’s locker rooms. Two things are accomplished there, one it allows the visiting recruits a little bling, like a hospitality package for the visit and two it shows the recruits that the existing players have a constant flow of bling. Then when the recruited player turns you down you can turn the kid in so you don’t have to play against him. Brilliant.

Trupert are you kidding me. You want to say that Saban is going to be on the hot seat while throwing support behind a jack of a coach in Mark Richt. They’ve erected a freaking statue to Saban in Alabama for gosh sakes. And Mark Richt is doubling a running back coaches salary when he coached the most underperforming group on the squad? Now that’s some leadership I am sure you as a Dawg Fan can wrap your head around as you kiss the feet of the underperforming Marky Mark Mark. And don’t tell me about Marky’s record, that is so pre-2006…..that’s so not relevant when he’s been there ten years and 6…let’s say this together SIX National Championships have been won the the SEC in those TEN years of dominance by Mark Richt……The joke is on Georgia for keeping Mark Richt around after last year. Get ready for a doozy this fall…….0-2 Start and it will take the National Guard to keep order in Athens on Saturdays.

Red Dog77… it’s easy to be pragmatic when Nick Saban is your head coach. I very much remember the Dubose/Shula years and the Price fiasco. I certainly wasn’t so pragmatic back then. What’s funny is most of us (SEC fans) are completely blinded by our deep loyalty to our programs/head coaches that we can’t see exactly how far down our programs are at the time. I distinctly remember thinking Bama would play for a National Championship all those years… I had no idea just how far down we were in terms of talent and depth (most of which was self-inflicted NCAA probation). UGA isn’t and never will be that far down due to the incredible in-state High School football. I think Richt will turn it around… but I would say “if” he can’t show significant improvement… he must go. Unless the fans are happy with 8..9 wins. USCe at home is HUGE. No bigger than that.. lol you get the point. UGA wins that coupled with beating Boise St… the Dogs will be rolling.

JB, it’s really not stupid to fire a coach who has squandered great talent the last five years. He’s had the #1 overall pick at QB, the first running back selected and the first receiver selected in drafts and yet he won nothing with those guys. He won nothing since 2005. Yeah he got to go to the sugar bowl with a team that beat up Hawaii and that was good? The standards for Georgia should be national championship…and the SEC championship is a by product to those ends….that’s what LSU, Alabama and Florida have for standards, but Mark always has a goal to win the East…woo hoo Marky…….Settle for Mark Richt and always steller arrest list that continually leads the nation. At least you as a Dawg fan can take solice in the fact that you hold the Fulmer Cup…..great accomplishement for such a fine Christian coach that runs a “clean” program….nothing like those other schools.

After the game I remember thinking.. the last time I walked out of a college football stadium was after almost the entire Rose Bowl was empty. trupert… give it a rest. If Saban falls to 3rd or 4th I feel very confident (as does anyone with half a brain) that he will remain the HC at Alabama for as long as he wishes. Exactly what is your point? You come off as though your hoping Saban will leave or get fired. If that’s the case.. that’s really lame. How about this…pull for your team and hope they strap on those Red helmets extra tight and play like real Georgia Bulldogs! Then get to Atlanta and beat Saban in the SEC Championship game. So next year you can come on here and talk some real smack.

He came to the school, but coach Ball hasn’t been to a practice yet, but I’m sure he’ll be back”. “They’re all still pretty even,” said Black. “I wouldn’t want to put it in an exact order, but I definitely like Alabama. Blackout, my point is that Alabamas expectations are over the top and they always will be. Remember a SEC coach of the year who failed to win the SECC the next season, who was run out of town for it, his name is Bill Curry.

When Saban again finishes behind both LSU and Arkansas (hint, hint) the Bammers will start sharpining the pitch forks and building torches, at this point it will be either win the SEC in 2012 or get the hell out. When does Alabama come off probation, maby he can pay a few players and buy himself a couple more years.

Bama fans , I can understand their being proud. UGA fans, are proud also and we all get carried away on these blogs sometimes. Gator fans , at least the ones I see on this blog, are mostly delusional and rude. Hell, if they aren’t careful, they will not have enough players pass the dreug test to play in Jax. this year. But GA. TEch. fans that come onto a blog and insult UGA teams and coaches. Now that stretches credability just a little too much. Like this GT flunky on this blog. As bad as UGA was last year they still beat tech. and UGA owns tech. over the last two decades and yet they come onto blogs and hurl insults at UGA. Now that is sick, LOL.
