Georgia basketball star Kevin Ware de-commits from Central Florida

Kevin Ware 2

(Breaking news: Georgia Tech’s “mystery recruit” not released from scholarship pending further investigation)

Kevin Ware told the AJC that he de-committed to Central Florida on Thursday night.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on right now, personal stuff that I don’t really want to speak about right now,” Ware said. “I spoke with my family about everything, and I decided it was time to back off on UCF.”

The last couple of months have been a recruiting whirlwind for the 6-foot-4 guard from Rockdale County High School who is ranked as the nation’s No. 56 college basketball prospect by Rivals.

Ware signed with Tennessee in last November’s early period but requested and was granted a release following the firing of Bruce Pearl on March 31. He committed to Central Florida last week, one day after Louisville coach Rick Pitino had traveled to Georgia for an in-home visit. He said he also considered UGA.

Fast forward to Thursday: Ware said he was no longer committed to Central Florida for reasons he would not fully disclose.

“I talked it over with my family, and there’s a lot of personal stuff that I need to get figured out before I decide on any school that I want to go to,” Ware said. “I’m just tired from everything. I’m just going to focus on my schoolwork because without my grades, I can’t get into any school. Once I get my final grades in and know what schools are recruiting me, I will definitely have my choice made up then.”

Did the de-commitment have to do with academics? “Oh no, it has nothing to do with grades,” Ware said. “I just want to back out with UCF and see what my other options are out there. I’m moving forward and seeing what other people have to offer.”

What college is Ware favoring now? “I’m interested in any college that is interested in me,” he said.

Does he have any interest in Georgia, Georgia Tech or Georgia State? Ware replied “yes” to all. “Louisville and Georgia are my [frontrunners]. I just have to talk to the coaches and see if they are still interested in me. I really don’t know where things stand.” Ware said he has not talked to Pitino, UGA’s Mark Fox, or assistants from either school since pledging to Central Florida last week.

What about Tennessee? The school he committed to as a sophomore while Pearl was still the team’s coach?”Honestly, I haven’t really heard anything from Tennessee even before UCF came into the picture. So whatever happened with them, it happened. Tennessee hasn’t been in contact. They’ve got other guards coming in.”

Note: NCAA rules prevent any prospective student-athlete from signing a letter-of-intent twice within the same “signing year.” In other words, Ware cannot sign again with a school. He can “commit” but is technically a free agent until he attends his first day of college classes.

Bender is being investigated by Pat Forde and ESPN for some wrong dealing with Louisville recruits, who suddenly go to UCF. The NCAA could be involved as well.

Sounds like a very classic example of a kid who loves seeing his name in the paper.

Once he “Commits” (I use that term loosely), he realizes that nobody wants to call him, write about him, or beg for inside info abymore…….

So what does he do?? THIS….. and look who has the headlines again, and look who the fans are all on here speculating about again.

It’s going to be a sore, sore wakeup call when this kid gets to college and realizes he is a lowely freshman, being hazed by upperclassmen teammates, fighting his tail off for garbage time PT. And until then, not a soul will know his name on campus outside of his coaches and the upperclassmen whom he caries their books to class for him.

Enjoy the light, Ware….. it’s dimming fast, and will be completely up to your skill to turn it back on.

Good luck with that.

Coach Fox, you are not on any ‘hot seat’ that I know of, no matter what the media throws out there, particularly on this site. Turn your back, walk away slowly, and never look back. Let somebody else deal with this soap opera! This kid has ISSUES written all over him!

Kid was solid UT for so long….something never seemed right about the UCF deal. My gut tells me he stays close to home and lands with my Dawgs. But last time I thought so he went and committed to Central Florida.

It seems to me that the UCF commitment was impulsive and that Ware and his family realize that. He’s an 18-year-old who is trying to get his head screwed on straight. Back off and give him a chance to do so rather than calling him names or speculating who will or will not want him. I’d bet both Pitino and Fox are still interested.

Lol at the Louisville fan trying to still push this nonsense of an investigation. Just because you losers had Pat Forde look into doesn’t make it an investigation. NCAA has no involvement yall are just butthurt no name UCF can beat yall for recruits.

I think that the kid just decided to take a step back and take a good, long, hard look at his options. It is a decision that will alter his future, so he may as well make sure that the school that he chooses is the best school for him. I just don’t get that, Hey Look ar Me, feel from this kid. I truly believe that he just is not sure where he wants to go at this time.

@TDawg, I’m really not sure what is going on. It appears that Tennessee’s firing of Bruce Pearl has turned this kid’s life upside down — at least temporarily. IMHO I don’t think Kevin Ware is big on drama at all. You know, he committed to the Vols as a sophomore in 2009 and you barely heard a peep out of the kid until 6 weeks ago … when Pearl was released. Since then wow

Ware is one of the best athletes I’ve seen, but wasn’t the best pure basketball player on his own team; that title belongs to the SG #40, Bernard Thompson. The big man inside, Clark, may turn out to be a better prospect than either of them. And better yet, their sophomore PG, Wilson, may be the best of them all. Not trying to knock Kevin at all, as he has tremendous potential and outstanding physical tools; I’m just surprised his teammate is being vastly overlooked. Kevin must develop a jump shot to be an impact player at the next level.

First of all…… Nobody from UCF comes on an AJC blog.

UCF = Techie

Secondly:

UCF = Top 25 football team before and after they beat UGA

Air Force = Service Academy before and after they beat Georgia Tech

Must suck to have to vicariously live through so many other programs in order to trash talk your rival whom you hate more than you love your own teamm.

He wants a little too much attention or completely lacks focus. Tenn, C. Fla, Georgia, Loui, doesn’t matter: “I’m interested in any college that is interested in me.” In other words, lick my balls, give me some more exposure, and we’ll see… Doubt he starts next year.

This is real simple guys. Everyone knows Tennessee bought Ware. Ask anyone involved in coaching. When you are bought the first time, you are going to be bought the 2nd time. Whoever gets him will be the team that offers him the most money

Bill, since you are so connected, please elaborate who are not so plugged in. I don’t believe Tennn has ever been accused of buying anyone. You’re saying Tenn bought this kid when he was a soph? That’s brilliant foresight for a coach to be so convinced about a kid after his soph year that he would “buy” him. Who else did they buy? Tatum, Golden, Mcrae? If they get a kid out og GA they must have bought him, right? Pearl had his integrity issue, but never heard him accused of buying anyone.
