Stone Mountain LB Markuss Eligwe commits to FSU over UGA and Florida (UPDATED with video)

Stone Mountain’s football coach had his phone ringing off the hook on Wednesday morning after linebacker Markuss Eligwe committed to Florida State over UGA and Florida.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder, who has around 25 early scholarship offers, is considered to be the state’s top linebacker prospect by some.

“Sorry I couldn’t answer a few minutes ago,” Dante Ferguson said. “It was Florida. They wanted to know why Markuss picked Florida State over them. They said they aren’t going to give up on recruiting him.

“We’ll talk later on with [Eligwe]. I’m not going to try to talk him out of anything. If he’s happy with Florida State, then he made the right choice. I’m just going to let him know other schools are going to come after him. It’s not over. In fact, this might make even more schools come after him.”

Along with the football opportunities, Eligwe picked FSU because of its criminology program. He made his college choice on Wednesday because it was his 17th birthday.

“Great education there and I value mine dearly,” Eligwe said.

“I felt great with Jimbo Fisher,” Eligwe said of FSU’s coach. “The defensive roster was broken down for me. They said I have a legit chance with my talent to play early.

The campus is nice, and where I would stay, I could make it feel like home … that pretty much covers it all.”

On Tuesday, Eligwe talked over the phone with UGA’s Mark Richt, who was lobbying for the Bulldogs.

“Florida State is getting a young man who is very smart in the classroom and on the football field,” Ferguson said. “He’s a born leader.  He can take over a football game. He’s going to be 6-4 — and as fast as he is, that’s scary.”

Update: Eligwe told the AJC later on Wednesday that — while he is committed to Florida State, he still plans to take his five official visits to colleges as a senior.

Hmmmmmmmm so we’ve lost another one. I hope CMR knows this is going to be his last season if he doesn’t win at least nine games and beat florida. Maybe that is why he and his staff are off to such a terrible recruiting start for the class of 2012 they know that they are not going to be there next year.

I read and article about him around signing day and he said back then he loved the state of florida and that is where he wanted to go to college. Uga made up alot of ground with him but we never really had a shot. Im just glad he chose fsu over uf

It is time to put up a fence at the Georgia-Florida border. It’s bad enough to lose recruits to SEC rivals but Florida State is REALLY getting some recruiting mojo working. They are getting dangerous.

Look the Noles have a great recruiting tool read this:

For those of you wondering the recruiting advantage of FAMU for FSU read this:

http://recruitocosm….eaking-it-down/

“Most importantly, Florida State sits next door to FAMU, a predominantly black college. In the realm of black colleges, FAMU is a premier party school, the FSU players’ social schedule is built around black sorority life at FAMU, and the reason you always hear about brawls, shootings, and stabbings at FAMU with FSU players is because the FSU players pretty much live there. They even have apartments in the FAMU part of town”.

“FAMU has 8,500 females enrolled and the #1 status symbol for a FAMU girl is a FSU football player boyfriend. Do I need to spell it out for you? That’s not even counting the FSU girls”.

As far as UF goes the kids that they got are not our top targets so let them pull our 2nd and 3rd choices as long as we get our top targets. Scholly numbers are tight this year and if we feel we can get out top targets over our 2nd and 3rd choice I’m fine with that.

UGA needs to take care of business on the field vs. Boise State and South Carolina to sure up job security in Richt and program stability for the 2012 recruits.

Picking FSU is not exactly “smart”!!! I guess you mean he is smart on the football field? FSU is certainly not noted for any academic prowess unless he is intentionally trying to dumb down his academic curriculum. UGA is a far better school

UGA is a far better school? Ummmm exactly how? FSU is a great academic school. Just because some of our football players couldn’t cut in in the classroom,. doesn’t mean our institute is bad. You got to put academics first! They didn’t.

being an fsu grad, i must be honest. if it was about acadeemics the kid would have picked florida. i and many of my friends got accepted to fsu and not uf. florida is ahead of fsu . fsu is way ahead of uga. as much as that pains me to say it. famu is our best recruiting tool. the gates scare me, they are still loaded and i think muschamp is bringing law and order back to that program.

No need to take jabs at FSU’s academics and pretend that this is what most football players go to school for in the first place. Whether UGA, FSU or otherwise, many of these kids look at academics as an afterthought so it’s always good to see when a player actually cares about the program he’s going to major in. Between FSU and UGA, neither of us are The Harvard of the South, so there’s no need to be sour. Florida State does have one of the best criminology/forensic science programs in the country though.

Hey Joey, as far as I’m concerned, why not compare the # of arrests between UGA and FSU? Think UGA has us beat in the criminal dept. Its probably best you don’t use that as your only valid point cuz UGA fans shouldn’t be talking about criminals.

Looks like the Noles are building another dynasty with Jimbo. My wife is an FSU grad, and we’ve been down a lot for games. They have a renewed enthusiasm combined with the history of Bobby’s unprecedented run of excellence. The Gators better be satisfied with beating up on uga every year because last year’s beatdown by the Noles is a sign of things to come in the sunshine state. If FSU beats Oklahoma early this year the rest of the nation will notice what’s happening at FSU. I’m just glad my Jackets got to play them before Bobby left.

FSU has a criminology program ranked in the top 5 nationally so it’s a great education decision if that’s what you want to major in (which he does). If his goal is to go on to law school FSU has the #1 program in the state and is ranked in the top 50 nationally. As for FAMU, there was ONE fight with some frat kid and football players but ZERO shootings, stabbings etc which some idiot writer implied. If there’s this much anger now the Dillon Lee decision is going to be brutal

Also, as a black alum of FSU, the angle of FAMU as a major recruiting tool is grossly overplayed. The social lives of FSU football players are not as deeply affected and entrenched in life of FAMU coeds as some of these comments are making it seem. Granted, it is an added benefit because it populates the area with more students of a similar background and culture, but to play that up as if FSU doesn’t have program/staff/tradition on its side as well is pretty foolish.

I don’t mind when Georgia High school players leave the State, there are 200 or so of them. What I HATE is when the elite ones leave. Georgia produces around 20 players a year that every SEC and ACC school wants bad….and I don’t know how many we get, but we lose a lot of them.I know Richt uses a different, more honest mind set. Bama had Four top QB’s offered last year and signed one, the kid from Plant City I believe. What if All four had said yes to Saban. I ‘ll bet my life he wouldn’t have signed all four. I know for a fact Richt doesn’t throw out 20 offers to say LB’s and see’s what sticks.

GTBob, not everyone wants to be a Tech nerd. Believe it or not, people find success in this world without going to Georgia Tech, don’t overestimate the value of your degree, trust me when I say the real world doesn’t care. Between FSU, UGA, GT and UF each school has one or two programs that rank higher than the respective programs at the other schools. Like I said, none of us are Ivy League, give it a rest.
