More details on the recruiting mystery at Georgia Tech

The recruiting mystery between Georgia Tech and basketball recruit Bobby Parks Jr. appears to be over.

New Tech coach Brian Gregory told the AJC on Tuesday night that “I do not foresee [Parks] coming to school at Georgia Tech next year.”

The 6-foot-4 guard was one of two players signed in last November’s early period by ex-Tech coach Paul Hewitt. Gregory convinced the other recruit, Milton High School power forward Julian Royal, to stick with the Yellow Jackets under the new regime.

Meanwhile, Gregory hasn’t really gotten anywhere with Parks, telling the AJC’s Ken Sugiura on Monday that it was “the most bizarre recruiting situation that I’ve ever have ever seen.” Parks, the son of former Hawks’ draft choice Bobby Parks Sr., lives in the Philippines with his father and Filipino mother.

On Tuesday, Gregory offered more details: “We’ve been in contact strictly via email. It has been very sporadic. The communication has been very one-sided. I just think Bobby and his family have made a commitment to stay in the Philippines for another year.”

What about granting Parks a release from his letter of intent with Tech? Gregory said he would do it, but that Parks has not requested it.

“I think the situation is so unique we have to do some research in terms of exactly where is he playing over there right now?” Gregory said. “Is it for a university? Is it for a pro team?

“But when someone has signed with another coach and you take over, I’m of the opinion that you grant those players releases if they want them. If that’s what needs to be done, then that’s what we will do.”

In January, the Philippine Star reported that Parks intended to play for a Filipino college team, but his father was quoted as saying that his son would study his options about continuing his career in the U.S. in two years.

I wonder if he was put off by the fact that Hewitt was fired or if this was a decision he would’ve made anyway.

lucky,

so why did Tech get rings made when you won 1 of the last 8 football games 3 years ago??

That kind of discredits any argument you guys want to make about “well look at the recent series history”……

UGA won the last baseball game. Period.

Wonder if we will make rings for this win tonight??

ther reason we got rings ya dumb ice is because we had a good season. unlike ugag we won more than 10 games. we tied for our division championship and we went to a bowl game.

All that matters right now.

We win most recent in each of big 3 sports. Try and justify UGA beating you with who else you’ve beaten….. We don’t care.

The thing is it doesn’t. You’re comparing apples to oranges with baseball and football. You’ve beaten us in football and basketball this year, but we own the series in baseball. Who comes away better in baseball, the team who wins the last game or the team who wins the series?

Hey all you uga fans especially you idiot St Simons. Grant it you won 6-4 last night but we have won 5 of last 6…won the season series and aare ranked 9th in the country. Our BB team is heading to the College World Series and yours is heading to get pt jobs in Athens. Do you mutts find it odd that the thing Jonathon Taylor ( may God bless him) values most is a Tech Jersey signed by all the players and his friednship with MArk Pope?

Hey Tech Baseball team- I’m still on your back! Of all those “great” baseball teams you’ve had, how many couldn’t make it out of the regionals? Funny how you claim not to be a troll, but you are always one of the first to chime in on a Tech article. I was reading a few UGA blogs and you are hardly ever one of the first to post on them if at all. Why is that? Obsessed with talking trash over the computer? Nothing better to do? And why the Charlie Sheen fetish now? At least that dope head isn’t a former player showing up stoned for the combine!

“We won the most recent” is a new argument for dawg fans. When Tech won in football in 2008, I don’t recall UGA fans saying “Darnit, we’ve won 7 of the last 8 but they won the most recent”. But now that’s what’s important. Whatever. When was the last time UGA took the season series from Tech in the regular season? It’s been at least 4 years.

Bobby Parks will likely stay in the Philippines. He said last year that he wants to represent the country in international play.

I’m sure this is going to be a boring point but, when you change coaches it’s not uncommon for recruiting and players to shift around a bit. There is no real news here.

The Parks family sounds like a group of arrogant people. They can’t even return phone calls or make a point that their son does not want to go to school in the US. Coach Gregory and DRAD have tried to reach out multiple to these people and finally have to resort to a cowardly email. I’d be pissed if I was CBG, not because you lost a recruit, but because of the way the situation has been handled on the other side. Hopefully one of CBG’s recruits from Dayton will join us at Tech.

Yeah, this has turned into an off-topic blog, but we already knew Parks wasn’t coming….long before it was obvious Hewitt was gone. That topic is a yawner. Now, on to your little pugs who are spouting off about a baseball victory last night over Tech. You do realize that the season series had been decided before the first pitch last night? Sure, we wish we had won so that it could have been a clean sweep, but you do know that 2 wins in baseball is greater than 1 in a 3-game series….losers.

They never speak of Alabama, Auburn nor Florida, that are in the same conference, hummmmmm inbreeding, thats all it is, “get my chew on and get back on my tractor, we got to eat ma”

S Simons comments have no place being included here, in response to the story at hand. But, what else can you expect from one of his “class”.

As for recruit Parks, Jr: who knows if he would have followed through with his committment whether Coach Hewitt was retained or not. I think the kid (i.e., the family) has more to concentrate on than a simple flip-flop based on change of coaches. My guess is, he will never play for a major college team. He’ll probably spend a year in construction work, a year in D-League, two years in Europe and then fade from the sport into obscurity. {Perhaps he’ll take S Simon with him ….}

CPJacket, I would not want either of Coach Gregory’s Dayton players refreenced. They quit on their teammates there, indicating they wanted to transfer away from Coach Gregory due to lack of playing time. GT does not need them.

I think tech. has got a good basketball coach with a level head and I predict tech. will be right up there near the top in a few more years. If he can recruit as well, as I think he can coach, you all have got a success story on your hands. Good luck in the future unless you are playing UGA.
