Kevin Ware’s family on rumors: ‘I’m not sure what the (heck) is going on right now’

Kevin Ware prediction

They say recruiting is like “soap operas for males.”

Rockdale County High School’s Kevin Ware, one of the nation’s top college basketball prospects, will be a nominee for Best Recruiting Story of 2011.

It’s hard to keep up with it all because it seems to change  by the hour. To the best of our knowledge on Thursday night, there were two new developments:

1. During player introductions at the Derby Classic in Louisville, Ware was introduced with his name and “undecided” as in his college choice. (Yeah, that might get some folks in the Sunshine State a little worried after Ware committed to Central Florida on Monday). Note: Ware’s stepfather did tell the AJC on Thursday night, “That ‘undecided’ stuff, that was planned before he even left. We had filled out the forms that way, and decided to leave it that way. It wasn’t because he is thinking about changing his mind with Central Florida.” OK, that would’ve cleared up everything until we saw this …

2. The “Cardinal Connect” website reported this:

I started off simply by asking [Ware] if the Central Florida situation was a done deal. He basically responded by saying “No not at this exact time”. I then asked him if he was still considering Louisville, and he responded with “ABSOLUTELY”. Just to push him a little I then asked if he was seriously considering the Cards. He replied with “Yes, I am seriously considering Louisville.”

That led to Ware’s stepfather saying this: “I’m not sure what the (heck) is going on right now. I’m hearing a whole bunch of different stuff. I haven’t talked to Kevin, but he is still going to UCF. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no change. When he gets back from Louisville, we’ll see what’s going on.” [Note: Kevin's mother did make the trip with her son]

Back to the Cardinal Connect: Keep in mind that the Derby Classic is at Louisville with other Louisville recruits participating (including his roommate for the trip) and with a lot of Louisville fans attending the festivities. (Heck), check out the photo of Ware and the reporter for Cardinal Connect. Bottom line: No doubt, Kevin Ware is in a high-pressure environment.

OK, quick recap (apologies if we’ve left anything out):

* Committed to Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl as a sophomore in 2009

* Signed with Vols in November 2011

* Requested and granted release from Tennessee scholarship after Peal firing

* Declared Louisville as frontrunner

* Scheduled official visit last week with Central Florida

* Canceled trip to Central Florida

* Decided at last minute to travel to Central Florida last weekend

* Welcomed Louisville coach Rick Pitino for in-home visit on Sunday night

* Committed and signed with Central Florida on Monday

* Ware’s letter-of-intent was denied because can’t sign two LOIs in same year

* Said he’s still committed to Central Florida

* Said he wouldn’t play in Derby Classic (held in Louisville) on Twitter

* Decided to play in Derby Classic

* Roommate at Derby Classic is none other than another Louisville recruit, Chane Behanan

(To be continued)

What do I think? I think speculation and rumors will continue until Ware enrolls in college classes in June — when he will “officially” be tied that particular school.

That’s two more months for what we’re affectionately and officially calling #KevinWhere on Twitter.

This is recruiting drama at its finest.

I’ve followed Kevin for three years and never known him to bring attention to himself by anything other than his actions on the basketball court. He is very quiet and unassuming. He was low profile and would’ve remained so had Tennessee not fired Bruce Pearl. When that happened and you saw Kevin Ware’s name on all these top 100 national lists as one of the few players unsigned, that’s when things naturally shot to the moon. Kevin has to be confused and overwhelmed, hearing it from all directions. The good news is — due to a loophole in the NCAA rules — Kevin has until he enrolls in college classes this summer to decide what is “officially” best for him and his family.

This is just another case of a high school athelete who makes fodder for the media (either intentionally or unintentionaly). The recruiting process if so far out of control that the NCAA will never be able to monitor itas it it should be. Who is to blame?
Everyone involved. The athelete, the parents, the colleges, the high school coaches, and not least of all…the media.

After watching all of this, it’s probably best that UGA is not involved with this kid. After this is all over, I can see the NCAA investigating this saga.

Stinger2…you forgot the idiot rabid fans who send letters, texts, and body parts to these kids to try to get them to go to their alma mater. Scary bunch.

Why isn’t UGA trying to get him? They have a scholly. I guess Coach Fox must be trusted that he knows how to do his job.

How did he sign with UT in November 2011 if it’s only April 2011?
How can his UCF LOI be denied if he was released from the first LOI regardless of when the original was signed?

Sounds like a confused kid. I’m sure he was feeling a tremendous amount of pressure up there in Louisville. I think he’ll settle on UCF, but playing for Pitino is certainly not a bad second option.

46% think he’s going to UGA? I know this is a Georgia paper, but that’s just crazy. The only places I see mentioned are UCF and the Cardinals. Where did UGA come from?

Please pick another school besides UGA. The kid will be one and done and him and his ego will be headed to the NBA.

Ware wouldn’t see more than 5 minutes a game for at least the first couple of years at Louisville. If he could play at Louisville, there is no reason on earth he would go to UCF…no tradition, no exposure(no TV games), inferior competition/no rivalry games, etc. They had won of their better teams this year…and went to either the CIT or CBI..and didn’t make it far.

Ware going to play at the Derby Classic is the worst thing that could have haopened for UCF. It’s about Ware seeing how things work at a legitimate big-time basketball program, not about Louisville messing around with a committed player. He could have elected not to play in the game.

Mark Fox made a run at Ware with 2 inhome visits. Ware went so far as to schedule an official visit to Georgia. The effort was made, but as anyone can see this is a bizarre situation. Will be interesting to see how this concludes.

some of you have it all figured out, no one knows what else is going on that may not be out. as far as the step dad he has always said it doesnt matter where the kid goes as long as he is happy. The kid does not deserve the circus created but others thrive on it. its all speculation until the kid tell the world what his intentions are.

From what I can tell Ware has a hard time with peer pressure, he just wants to make everyone happy. From what I’ve heard he Mom feels like he committed too quickly to UCF, his Stepfather thinks he should honor his UCF commit and since he’s been in Louisville he’s been telling fans he coming to UofL. I hope the he quits talking and just takes his remain visits then decides with his family where the best place for him to play will be.

Is it really that bizarre? He wants to take a free trip to Louisville, he’s surrounded by them, and of course he says he’s “undecided.” What kid wouldn’t.

I’m a Tech fan, and if Gregory wants him, I hope he changes his mind again. That’s the NCAA rules, and as Carvell points out, none of this would have happened if Pearl had not left the school. Given this chance to be a “free agent,” I hope he and his parents continue to look hard to find the best situation for this young man.

And an additional note: He committed “crazy early” to Tennesee and Pearl and never wavered until Pearl left. Up until that point, I think he might have been one of the most loyal recruits I have ever seen. To now criticize him, to me, is just unfair.

Sounds like he is being tugged in too many directions. Lots of stakeholders, too much attention and confusion reigns. Throw in the hypocracy that is the NCAA (what a joke). Hope that he can sort it out and make a good decision. But in the meantime some of you need to get off of his back. He is only 18 for goodness sake.

We’ll see if Kevin Ware is truly a man of his Word and goes to Orlando to play ball. But, I would never put anything past the conniving Rick Pitino. Nor would I put anything past those crazed ‘Ville boosters to pull some sort of antics to try to get him to change his mind.

Ultimately, I think this NCAA rule that does not allow a player to sign a second NLI after being released from his first one, hurts the prospective student-athlete more than it helps him. What’s the purpose of such a rule?

I’ve got an unique idea kid. Visit all the schools that you are interested in. Leave pops and mom and get off by yourself for 3 or 4 days and ask yourself, which school will I be happiest at? You will no the answer. Don’t make a decision that you think will make your parents and friends happy. They cannot live your life for you. Man up and tell them what you want and stick with it. Then call that school and tell them what your decision is. It’s that simple.

I have been close to the Kevin Ware situtation and unfortunately for UCF fans, all signs point to him changing his committment to Louisville as early as the middle of next week. His mother has talked it over with him and they will announce soon.

One Man's Opinion

3:27 pm

A couple of thoughts:
1. This kid is a high school senior
2. He’s on a trip in a high pressure environment – Louisville
3. Seriously, wouldn’t it be sort of a face to Louisville when asked if he were considering them, “No, I’m just here for the free trip, and have no intention of signing?” As well, when he said it’s not exactly done, that is true; until he enrolls
4. Likely, he was told it’s not a done deal until he enrolls by someone else (how would an 18-yr old kid know the vagaries of this?)
5. It’s certainly possible, and likely probable, that someone at Louisville said, we know you’ve committed to UCF, but come up for a visit anyway; it can’t hurt. And really, until you enroll formerly, it’s not like you’re going back on your word with them.

Make sense. Again this kid is 18; Rick Pitino is a good coach, despite fact I don’t like him (Celtics fan) and is a good recruiter.

Let’s give him a break.

“The good news is — due to a loophole in the NCAA rules — Kevin has until he enrolls in college classes this summer to decide what is “officially” best for him and his family.”

- Why is it “good news?” Because instead of a professional journalist, you’re a UGA hack?

If Ware is a great guy, he should stay away from a corrupt Pitino, unless his only other option was an even more corrupt John Calipari. He’d be better off with UCF or giving the Dawgs a chance in his home state. Certainly, UGA has a great X’s and O’s coach in Fox, and I was surprised UCF made an inroad over a UGA team that is on the rise.
