State’s No. 1 DB has Alabama, Tennessee and FSU in top 3

St. Pius defensive back Geno Smith, who is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 football prospect for 2012, confirmed to the AJC that his leader is Alabama, with Tennessee and Florida State rounding out his top 3.

What about Georgia? The Bulldogs had appeared to be making progess with Smith. What about Georgia Tech?

“Georgia and Georgia Tech are still in the mix,” Smith said.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Smith is expected to make his college decision after his senior season at the Atlanta private school.

Bummer, it’s pretty obvious were not going to be going after the Carver DB anymore. So if we let Gino get away too…

Bah, what am I’m saying, like those are the only two decent defensive backs in the state? lol we’ll be fine.

I can only hope this drama unfolds like the Kevin Ware situation. I absolutely love following the drama and intrigue of an 18 year old kid.

I believe Revelations 1:2012 says that the end of the world is near when another top rated Georgia recruit leaves the state. I don’t know if this is the kid to make it come true or not but just be prepared. Buy some water or something.

UGA will be alright. Don’t want players who don’t want to be there. Everyone has to make the choice that is right for them. Obviously, the kid is good (hence the rating), but if he favors another school, so what. “Can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself” as the old song goes.

Smith looked at all the DB’s we’ve signed recently and figures he might play sooner somewhere other than UGA. If that’s the case, good luck to Mr. Smith.

What I’m more concerned with is the overall recruiting picture. Yes, we closed strong and made huge strides last year but it’s obvious that recruiting is year round now and I’d like to see some early commitments for the DAWGS!

GREAT news…. Still a long way till signing day. Bama is believed to be the current leader for the top two in the state of Georgia for 2013 as well. Possible #1 overall Robert Nkemdiche who is coached by former Bama player Mickey Conn and probable 5* LB Rueben Foster who grew up an Alabama fan. ROLL TIDE!!!!!

I guess a lot will depend on our season recruits are just nervous to commit to UGA because the uncertainty around Richt long wait before we see any one commit .

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. It is a long time until NSD. Remember how Richt closed in 2011 and snared a couple of big time prospects that Satan loved. He looked like a little kid who just dropped his sucker in the middle hole of the outhouse.

I still can’t see too many NEW DBs being 6-0 and a buck 80 being that great. When the WRs are all 6-3 to 6-6, 210 and as fast or faster than the small DBs. I would love to have him, but I would rather get Tall WRs that can make the change to DB.
I joked all year at the Falcons DB calling him the SPUD WEBB of the NFL because of his hops and skill and making plays on the ball. That is getting harder and harder for these LIL guys to compete with the Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson sized WRs.

Walker
High School recruiting at its best. No way his family has the money to sell a home and buy a home in the new district. GHSA is a JOKE. The ONLY schools that should be able to recruit are the Privite schools because the parents have to pay for the education or get a scholarship for a student that can pass classes.

Don’t forget the City Schools, just as guilty. Buford, Gainesville and Calhoun are perfect examples of that. And by the way, nobody should be able to recruit, whether they are public or private.

From what I understand, he was going to somebody who had the spread and his dad is a coach, so he can basically go anywhere in the county that his dad goes.

GHSA at one time required a year off if you transferred within 50 miles or so. They should go back to that.

Wait till next year...

How do you a fault a kid for being 170 lbs. before his senior year of High School? Is your strength and conditioning program that terrible that you expect him not to bulk up at all in his time at UGA should he choose to go there? Geno Smith is a very good player, extremely good. Whatever school he chooses will be fortunate to have him.

F Dawg: You’re right; UGA needs to see some more commitments now; momentum is huge in recruiting; kids talk to each other and recruit each other; we were further ahead last year verus this year!!! Win the first (2) games and it will snowball!!!
Blackoutanyone: I have to agree w/ you; Alabama has become a major recruiting machine; in GA and nationwide!! Watch our if Kirby leaves to become a Head Coach!!!

Kirby Smart would be the top choice the man knows how to recruit just like Mushchamp was for Texas Smart is the first to offer right away i am sure McGarity has Smart on speed dial .

Most of the top recruits will wait until after January 1st to commit. They enjoy the attention plus they get a chance to announce their choice on ESPN nationwide. Plus, the longer they wait the more information they have. They get to see how the teams play and if the coach’s future is secure.

Many of the top recruits in the state are taking a wait-and-see approach with UGA’s upcoming season. Out of state recruiters, namely Kirby Smart, make a living with negative recruiting and have been telling recruits that Richt is gone after this season. If/when, UGA has a stellar season, Saban and co. will be left at the altar again by the state’s top recruits.

There is still 8 or 9 months until NSD. Georgia has only around 15 scholarships available for 2012. Most of the guys who have verbally committed are not on UGA’s top 20 wish list except Matt Jones. All of rest are still undecided. If UGA could start 4-0, then I think a lot of elite players will jump on UGA offers because of the limited number of spots in the class.

Why aren’t we recruiting Josh Hosley? I thought his highlight video was better than Geno Smith’s anyway. It seems like every year there is a 3 star prospect who is a clear diamond in the ruff and sometimes Georgia goes for them and sometimes not. Rennie Curran is one such guy that Georgia got and one Georgia didn’t go after is Marcus Caffey. Mark my prediction: Marcus Caffey will have a better SEC career than Crowell. And Josh Hosley, wherever he goes will have a better career than Geno Smith.

Alabama is making it’s presence known in Georgia once again and again and again. Maybe, just maybe if Kirby Smart becomes the Georgia coach this “Saban’s March to the Sea” would slow down. I for one can not see Georgia becoming a national power with soooo many Georgia kids leaving the state. Sure hope I am wrong.
Bama guys….well done
Georgia guys…..we’ll see.
This much I feel safe saying…..no dream team this year.

So Gino probably wants to get out of state. All the way over yonder to Aliebamie. Must be bout a 1000 miles to Aliebamie. Floreduh bout 700 miles from Georgia. It will be much futher once it stops sucking. That’s the only thing that keeps it attached to the mainland. Because Floreduh sucks. Kid go to where you wish, but don’t use the lame excuse that you just want to get out of state. If you really want to get out of state, then how about California, Oregon, Texas, New York, Alaska, Hawaii, now thats really getting out of state. Wouldn’t blame the kid one bit if he really wanted to get away from Georgia. But please, Alabama, Tennessee and Flordia. That’s like crossing the street. You ain’t went nowhere. Would love to have you at Georgia, but if you truly want to get out of state, then go west young man and I don’t mean across the road to Alabamer.

I just watched some of Matt Jones championship game against Lincon .I was not impressed . He has good size but he looked slow and I didn’t see any kind of burst. I like to watch recruits play when they face teams that are just as good or better than their own team. Playing against inferior talent shows nuthin. I also think Geno is a better cover corner than Colsey . Colsey is more of a safety or physical corner. Geno has great hips and recovers well out of WR’s moves. He reminds me of Damian Swann.

6′0 170 lbs 17 year old kids can grow to be 6′2 200 lbs in a year. I wouldn’t knock him for his size. He’ll grow.

Sure they MIGHT grow. Then again they might NOT. In the SEC you need physical DBs who can hit a 6″4″ 210 -220 pound wide receiver like South Carolina lines up with. Otherwise, you’re in trouble. Did anyone notice Branden trying to tackle last year? Not a pretty picture.
