Georgia Tech’s Brian Gregory and UGA’s Mark Fox cross paths on recruiting trail

No. 32 (Parker) and No. 31 (Morris) brought the coaches from Georgia Tech and UGA together on Wednesday (AJC photo)

New Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory and UGA’s Mark Fox made appearances at the same place on Wednesday — Miller Grove High School.

The coaching rivals were observing Miller Grove teammates Tony Parker and Brandon Morris, two of the nation’s top college basketball prospects for 2012.

Parker is a 6-foot-9, 270-pound power forward who has around 40 early offers, including North Carolina, Duke, Georgia Tech and UGA. Morris is a 6-7, 200-pound wing with around 15 offers, including Florida, Auburn, UGA and Clemson.

Georgia Tech may be next for Morris. “The previous staff at Georgia Tech didn’t really recruit Brandon that hard, but the new guys have a vested interest,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White said told the AJC. “They are giving him a good look.”

Morris has been on a hot streak lately. He got offers within the last two days from Texas, Memphis and Xavier. Parker got two new offers, Texas and Arkansas, to add to his stack.

Will Parker and Morris be a “package deal”? It hasn’t been talked about that much in recruiting circles, but Miller Grove’s coach didn’t rule  out the idea. “I think that will depend on which schools recruit both. Only time will tell. I do know that Tony and Brandon really enjoying playing basketball together.”

The star-studded tandem has helped Miller Grove win three straight state championships.

DA, where is that kinder, gentler DA we were growing to like? Good to see CBG making the rounds, showing interest and getting to know the high school programs.

What? You mean Tech fans don’t scream “To Hell with Georgia”in their sleep??

Whats wrong with me shouting out my feelings from time to time, like Tech fans do incessantly??

Don’t take it personally. Some of my best friends are Techies. I just despise your athletic program because it rivals mine.

Hey Carvell, I thought you said Isaiah Crowell’s Facebook page was taken down? Still alive and kicking. I see you are still pulling legit posts too.

If either UGA or Tech swing Parker’s commitment it will be a huge upset against the power schools like Duke or UNC.

Hoopster,

It is simply clear that Isaiah Crowell lied to Carvell. There is nothing illegal about lying to the media.

However, this post was not about that, so why are you still stalking a 18 year old kid’s facebook page?? That’s creepy, and borderline illegal in itself.

Tech Grad,

If you were a tech grad, you probably would be able to use logic better than your post demonstrates:

*It is not in any way illegal to view a person’s public profile and you cannot label something as borderline illegal if it is perfectly legal

*If someone says they are shutting down their Facebook page, there are several possibilities here of what is happening. The most likely is that his interpretation of shutting down his Facebook page is shutting down his use of it and I am guessing from Carvell’s post he is not posting anymore. It is possible that he lied to Carvell, but I think it would be wrong to first assume a young man is lying rather than judge whether the intent of his statement is reflected in his actions. If he was still posting away on FB, that would be lying If his page was inactive or deleted, I would consider his statement true.

Do you have any sense for who Georgia and Georgia Tech’s top targets in Georgia are for the class of 2012?

Thanks

It’s great to see both major state programs competing for in-state talent. The state of Georgia has plenty of talent, enough to rival the Carolina schools. We just need to keep that talent in the state. Good luck to both Gregory and Fox to make that happen. Go Jackets!

RomeDawg,

Home cooking and playing in front of your ‘homies’ means a lot to some of these kids. As long as they have an opportunity to be on a big stage in a major conference many of them are happy to stay home. Will they continue to get out-of-state offers? Of course, but I wouldn’t discount the efforts of Fox and Gregory on these kids.

true tech,
How does UGA suck when we have a better athletic program by a longshot. The only good thing yall have going is baseball. Lets see we have football, kind of baseball, basketball, etc.
You can’t say we suck because you are bitter and sad about how your sorry team is doing.

Tsk, tsk to Dawgs fans misbehavior…Someone at some point has to set an example and show a little class. I’d love it if EITHER TECH or UGA got one of these guys. We need the b’ball talent to start thinking about the state schools.

Georgia has way more in-state talent than NC. Check the Duke and UNC rosters. They have very few local players. They have to go elsewhere to get the caliber of players that they want.

Carvell why is it with you Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech, Florida is Florida, Auburn is Auburn, North Carolina is North Carolina, Texas is Texas but Georgia is UGA? If you are going to use an acronym for Georgia then use one for the rest of the schools, otherwise Georgia should be Georgia. Thank you.

The basketball talent in the 2012 class from the state is unbelievable. Three big men in the class, Parker, Shaq Goodwin of DeKalb Co, Robert Carter of Thomasville, are inside the Top 75 in most national rankings. There are, depending upon the ranking service, between 9 and 12 in the Top 150 nationally with several more between 150-250. Both state schools should be in position to sign great classes. Deep and talented would be a good description of the talent level.

@Georgia Grad, thanks for your comment. Fair question. I use “UGA” rather than “Georgia” because “Georgia” can cause confusion between “the state of Georgia” and the “University of Georgia” ie … Georgia’s No. 1-rated prospect at DB … is that the state or UGA? Just for clarity. Thanks

Why would either of these guys sign with Georgia? Georgia has NEVER had a consistently successful basketball program and never will. Every coach they have ever had has either left within 5 years (the successful ones) or been fired or quit in disgrace. The only successful sports in the cesspool are football and women’s gymnastics (OMG), and even the football team seldom lives up to expectations..

Ormewood, you’d better check the number of NC players playing D1 at schools outside of NC. Then you might not be so “mouthy” about the state of Ga. having more good players than the state of NC. Duke and UNC will get the best instate, then go outside to get the best players nationwide, leaving the “best of the rest” in NC to go out of state.

Afghan, I am certain that some good NC players from NC end up playing D-1 ball. My point is that there are not many NC guys on the Duke and UNC roster. Duke’s starting five from a year ago when they won it all had zero NC players. I believe that same is true for UNC’s championship from the year before.

UNC’s stacked roster next season: Barnes, Henson, Zeller, Marshall, McAdoo. None of those guys are from NC. They have to go out of state to get elite players.

But his attendance and content do provide support for the terrible reports regarding our education system.
