2013 Grayson DL Robert Nkemdiche steals spotlight at Nike camp

No. 783 was No. 1 in the eyes of many at Athens Nike Camp (AJC Photo)

Several of Georgia’s top college football prospects for next year were on display at Friday’s Nike camp in Athens.

However, it was a member of the Class of 2013 that grabbed the spotlight: Grayson High School’s Robert Nkemdiche, a 6-foot-5, 260-pounder who turned everybody’s heads as soon as he walked up to the registration table. He’s only a sophomore.

Nkemdiche dominated the drills, so much to the point that one other heralded defensive lineman — a junior — was overheard saying to a couple of others, “I’m just glad 783 (Nkemdiche’s camp number on his jersey) isn’t in the Class of 2012 with the D-Line rankings.”

The consensus of several recruiting analysts observing the camp, which included players from many surrounding states, was this: Nkemdiche will almost certainly be ranked at Georgia’s No. 1 overall prospect for 2013, and has a decent shot of being rated No. 1 overall in the USA.

Nkemdiche, who was named  has a stack of early scholarship offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, UGA and South Carolina. He won the Nike camp’s award for MVP of the defensive lineman.

Here were the other MVP position winners from Georgia:
RB: Mike Davis, 2012, Stephenson (committed to Florida)
OL: Joe Harris, 2012, Lithonia
LB: Ukeme Eligwe, 2012, Stone Mountain
DB: D.J. White, 2012, Union Grove

Does he have interest in any school in particular?

Wow. Huge frame for a sophomore in HS. If this kid stays focused on his grades and his game he could have a very bright future.

Absolute monster for a sophomore. Hopefully he makes the right decision and comes to Tech.

“electricall [sic] engineer,”
Where are you getting this information? It kinda sounds made up. Also, a kid who is 6′5″, 260 lbs as a sophomore is probably going to be in the NFL, not an electrical engineer.

Dawgs have to put a dominent team on the field and win a lot of games including the SEC and when they do they will dominate the recruiting of these guys. To hell with bama and florida. Just win baby!!

All Tech for him and his brother – other schools don’t even need to bother. Not only are they outstanding athletes they are outstanding students.

Just a question, if the older brother is such a good student as you proclaim then why is he going the JUCO route? Everything I have heard is that he is headed for Bama, Roll Tide!

Why not play in the same stadium you just might be playing in as a pro? Talk about being the face of a new program, you would be legendary!

You GT fans are always looking for an excuse to form a tickle pile, I’m sure this is another. Don’t enroll him just yet boys, I expect he has higher aspirations than a lower tier ACC program which averages 35,000 for home games. His HS coach, Conn, played at Ala who knows what that means. His brother is Juco bound, they want to play together, which Juco will the brother attend? Which programs on his list have signed Juco players in the past? It isn’t GT. This will be an Alabama – Georgia battle.

Everybody needs to calm down. There are indicatiions that the younger Nkemdiche likes GT. He has visited several times. He is friends with Shawn Green (RS-Fr NT from Grayson). However, I wouldn’t put money on GT’s chances, just because of the number of big programs in the area. I mean, a guy like this, everybody from the SEC, ACC, and Big 10, and ND will be all over him. You guys who are dogging GT should realize he is just a Soph., and a lot can happen between now and 2013.

He and his brother are a package deal. The brother, Denzel, will be coming out of JUCO the same time as Robert is graduating high school. Bama is definitely the team to beat because of the Grayson football coaching staff. Their head coach is a huge Bama fan, but besides that, the rest of the coaching staff is not very favorable towards UGA, so he’s hearing negative info from everywhere. UGA’s recruiters have a lot of work to do here, not only to change the opinions of the two brothers, but to gain the trust of the Grayson coaches who hold a ton of sway over these two young men.

Well, according to “Dawg48,” we have no “chain.” Time to pack it in, PJ, we have no “chain” with this guy.

All jokes aside, if my son were a star defensive prospect, I would have a hard time keeping him away from Bama. Saban has a way with defensive stars.

With that said, the Tech defense just may surprise some people this year. Groh has a good history with putting guys in the NFL too…with lesser talent, I might add.

“whatthedawg,”
Occasionally, players from the ACC are selected in the NFL draft. It is very rare, but it does happen sometimes.

Although in the interest of full disclosure, that article is a year old. Those stats might be inaccurate now. But still, the point remains…if you play in a major conference, the scouts will see you play. If you’ve got the talent, you’ll get drafted.

Now, if your argument is the guy wants to win championships, I can’t disagree with you. The SEC is the way to go.

Blackoutanyone?

“I don’t really have a school out front yet, but I will visit LSU,” he said. “I really like that school, and I think they are good team. I might visit Florida, and I will go down to Alabama to one of their camps for sure.”

Since Nkemdiche is from Georgia, each of the two big home state universities have shown interest as well.

“I was able to go to a couple of games at Georgia and was able to speak with coach (Mark) Richt,” Nkemdiche said, “and I was also able to speak with coach (Paul) Johnson. Both teams are good schools with good players.”

His coach is former Alabama player Mickey Conn and alot of people close to him believe Bama is in the lead very early.

Well now, Gwinnett County has a genuine stud that any idiot can identify as a no miss collegiate player. Congratulations Georgia recruiters you’ve actually indentified a football player from Gwinnett County. I can go out on a limb and make a guarantee on this one. Alabama has inside track, Georgia Tech will be most likely looked at favorably…….the University of Georgia has NADA, Zilch, no chance, not even a slim one. Georgia will be getting exactly what it deserves in this one because of their lack of intelligence in recruiting Gwinnett County. The County that brought the Dawgs names like Stinchcombe, Greene, Pollack, McGill, Curran, and more, has been neglected since Richts tenure at Georgia. The players are and have been scattered all over the SEC playing at a high level. This while Rodney Garner is out chasing the NIKE Camp players that show up in Athens instead of getting down and watching film, getting off his rear end and sending coaches to actually evaluate in person. The coaches in Gwinnett know it, the players that have come out the last few years know it and apparently the only ones that don’t know it is Mark Richt and his band of coaches that will be fired at the end of this season. But, there’s always the hope that the next coach can recruit this kid,,,,,then Georgia might have a shot.

@SickandTired…..what elite Gwinnett County players has UGA missed on lately? If my memory serves me right, UGA’s best teams early this decade were lead on both sides of the ball by Shiloh’s Davey Pollack and South Gwinnett’s David Greene. His coach will have a say in where he attends school, and if it is indeed the case he will end up at Bama. If he is looking to be an engineer, he will go to Tech. I still believe UGA has a chance. No one knows except the players.

Surely Georgia knows the importance of landing Joe Harris. Their 2011 offensive line class is terrible and they lose 4 starters after this year( Sturdivant, Jones, Glenn, and Anderson), after losing 3 starters this past year ( Davis, Davis, and Boling), plus their talent evaluation is terrible, having lost three more players that were listed on their two deep last year (Kevin Perez, Jonathan Owens, and Tanner Strickland). Richt and Bobo in their arrogance don’t emphasize the offensive line. They think they can just throw it all over the place, and “take shots down field.” You don’t need two former QB(s), one as a head coach, the other as an offensive coordinator. They simply support one another, and their crazy decisions!

I will admit that CMR has not done a very good job on recruiting offensive linemen. He and Bobo are to busy evaluating every QB too death. CMR needs to let Bobo handle that job and CMR need to concentrate on the rest of the team. Also Garner has done a lousy job the last few years in keeping the recruiting balanced. WAY TOO MANY PLAYERS ARE FORCED TO PLAY OUT OF POSITION.
With Nkemdiche being a defensive lineman we still have a chance now that Grantham is at Georgia. Nkemdiche should have been scouted hard starting in the 8th or 9th grade. Garner and CMR should have showed a ton of interest for a few years now . I’ll bet that Saban knows the name of his dog and goldfish. The name of the first girl he had a crush on.
CMR has on numerous occasions stated how important a football teams offensive and defensive lines are but recently we have not been able to match our lines with the other elite teams in the SEC. So he recognizes how important they are but his recruiting effort tells a different story. I have been watch Georgia since 1970 and have never seen an offensive line as weak and non competitive as the one we had in 2010. It take two or three years of complete neglect to get that bad. For now the changes will show a lot of improvement . Maybe it will get us back in the upper group of the SEC elite. But I fear we will be behind the top three until:
UGA GETS A GREAT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND BOBO AIN’T IT. We also need a much better recruiting coordinator. Garner ain’t it either.

Why are the GT Fans so friggin’ delusional?

Robert and his brother want to play together in college and his brother will be finishing up his JUCO stint at the same time Robert is finishing up in HS, since the geek-nerd-loser segment of the GT fanbase like to brag about GT not taking JUCOs anymore, then that leads me to believe that GT has no shot at this SA.

Sophomores change their minds 500 times about what they want to major in in College by the time they get to college., so GT having great Engr. Programs mean nothing at this point.

During the CPJ-era, “tons” of Academic Qualifiers that GT has desired has turned GT down for one reason or another, so this SA having good grades doesn’t give GT any “inside track” to signing him.
