UGA football recruit Ray Drew will be two-sport athlete for Bulldogs

Georgia 5-star football recruit Ray Drew says he plans to play two sports in college.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end told the AJC that he requested and was granted permission to join UGA’s track team. This spring, Drew has rapidly developed into one of the nation’s top discus throwers while at Thomas County Central High School.

“I’m not going to give up on football,” Drew said with a laugh, “but I’m going to do both at Georgia.”

Drew said he talked with Georgia’s football coaches and they signed off on the idea. “They think if I have an opportunity to go far with it, then they are all for it.”

Drew finished fourth in the discus in last year’s state meet at 171-10. This season, Drew worked hard on his technique and the results have been startling. At the Florida Relays, Drew threw 192-3, which is one of the best performances ever by a Georgia high school athlete. Last week at another meet in Tallahassee, Drew increased to 195-11 3/4. He has thrown around 200 in practice.

“I’ve been throwing since my sophomore year,” Drew explained. “I improved a good bit my junior year, and ended up throwing around 150 and got to 170 by the end of the season. That was without the spin. This year, I’ve worked on the spin and gotten more comfortable with it. I’ve taken it from 170 to the 190s.”

As usual, Drew has placed high expectations on himself. He’s not only chasing after the state championship in the discus in next month’s state meet but also the state record.

Ironically, the record is held by another defensive lineman who signed a football scholarship with Georgia — Winder-Barrow High School’s Hiawatha Berry threw 204-2 in 1985.

Now back to football: Drew said he will attend Saturday’s G-Day with several other members of UGA’s 2011 “Dream Team” recruiting class. He said Wilcox County’s defensive back Nick Marshall, Dalton offensive lineman Watts Dantzler, East Hall linebacker Sterling Bailey and Griffin defensive back Corey Moore are just a few who plan to hang out together at the scrimmage.

Robert Nkemdiche 6-foot-5, 250-pounder is dominating games at the highest level in Georgia.
“After talking with several national scouts on Saturday at the MVP Camp in Atlanta, Nkemdiche is looking like a sure bet to be a top 5 national player and many believe he will be the number one prospect in the country in the 2013 class,” said Mansell. “He is certainly a candidate. He is the total package.”
“Nkemdiche is coached by former Alabama player Mickey Conn and many close to him think Alabama is the team to beat.” — Rusty Mansell

2013 is a long time away. A lot can happen in 2 years.

For instance: Auburn wins The National Championships after defending national champ Alabama blows a big lead.

Maybe he’ll make this track sport an advantage for him in football as well. Maybe it’ll help him throw some of them offensive linemen out of his way when trying to get to the QB. We’ll see. IMO, Ray Drew will be one of the greats in UGA football history before it’s all said and done and he hangs up his cleats for the last time as a Bulldog.

Good for Ray Drew and the coaching staff for letting him pursue the discuss.

By the way – my clients in Caldwell, ID – all Boise State fans – do not seem too worried about the opener in the DOME!

In fact, they see this as a game they should win – and like the fact that it is an SEC team to add to the list of “Big Name” schools they beat. Most think that this game will be easier than the Virgina Tech game last year – they view UGA as a struggling program.

Can’t say I blame them based on 2009 & 2010 performance.

Go DAWGS!!!!

When people in blogs write about upcoming NCAA penalties, etc., I skip down. Too little time to waste it on such garbage. I come here to read about the Dawgs, and I appreciate news about other SEC programs. Rumor is not news. If it were, the Mythical National Champion would be someone like Georgia Southern because everyone at the Bowl level would be suspended.

If the true fans want these blogs cleaned up, we need to ignore the spam. It will always be there unless the AJC decides to spend a lot of money to get into the censorship/moderation business.

Blackout Anyone? – Enjoy your posts – actually entertaining.

You do seem to have some knowledge – or at least an opinion.

Saban definately has Bama on a roll – and yes -he kicked the door open for recruiting in Georgia – probably getting recruits that typically would have gone to Tennessee, Auburn, Florida or FSU…… but a few UGA as well.

Your thoughts on the following – and real thoughts – not just clowning around:
SEC WEST
1. What will be the pecking order in 2011?
2. How do you see Auburn against Alabama, LSU, MISS ST, Arkansas and UGA
3. LSU seems to be building and poised for a big year – your thoughts on that game with Bama.
4. Your thoughts on Florida and SC
5. Your thoughts on where you actually think UGA will place in SEC East.

B. CalloPay… While I realize it’s alot of fun to hope and dream a rival school is cheating and ends up on probation. Trust me I get it. But if your refering to the Brent Calloway deal as the poster above was doing… stop waisting your time. That “rumor” was floating around because of the way Calloway commited to Bama… switched to the Barn and then signed with Bama. That rumor was turned into news when the lead writer of the Auburn recruiting site Auburnsports.com went on the radio in Mobile and spouted off alot rumors about Calloway receiving a car… Calloway’s dad’s house being paid off and so on. Alabama spent the next TWO days investigating and found that the house was paid off 15 years ago. The car was a family friends who was test driving a new carmero and Brent never saw it. I only waist my time typing this because you and many others are to lame to research before you post garbage. Keep in mind Bama is currently on probabtion (text book gate) and therefore under the repeat violator status. We are behind the times over here but no one is stupid enough to buy cars and pay off houses with todays news media and the internet. Ask yourself why would Bama cheat and chance repeat violator status to get a kid who will redshirt and probably not see the field until 2014 at the earliest?

B. CalloPAY

April 15th, 2011

Blackout…it’s not hopes and dreams. It’s a fact. Alabama (and AU for that matter) have a long, rich history of cheating. If I’m not mistaken, those two schools are 1 and 2 on the list of infractions. And, 3rd place is way down the list. Honestly, I do not like when fellow SEC schools get caught or accused of cheating.
Your excuses regarding Calloway don’t hold water. It sounds like AU fans defending the 4 ex-players from HBO……”they couldn’t have been paid….they were not big recruits….just ask other former players”….blah, blah.

Sir Barks A Lot…. thank you sir. This blog is a good source of recruiting news from time to time. Too many overly sensitive people on here though.

(1) Bama (Schedule has Arky and LSU in T-town)
(2) I see 7 losses… Once each to Miss. St, Arky and UGA and 2 losses apiece to Bama and LSU.. those games will get UGLY. Barn is replacing everyone on the OL with young kids. Long year on the Plains.
(3) Very close game. LSU is very scary… especially if the QB situation is straightened out. Les Miles is good for a bone head call or two a game. Will the football gods smile on him again or not? That game is in T-town… I think Bama pulls it out.
(4) Florida in for a down year… 180lb starting RB’s typically don’t hold up in pro-style offenses. Wasn’t impressed at all with their spring game showing (though a lot of injuries). Takes a year or so to change philosophies in a program like that. USCe… has the perfect schedule to make a run at Atlanta. But I see the UGA taking that game in Athens.
(5) I’ve said for a while now I see UGA vs. Alabama in Atlanta. I think Richt is eating and sleeping with game tape of Boise St. and will have the dogs ultra prepared. That game spring boards UGA into a favorable schedule. Watch out for Miss. State at home… I think that’s a program that will sneak up on some folks this year.

I find it ironic when I read Bama fans slamming other schools recruting concerns when they are on probabtion themselves and the entire Albert Means thing. They may blame Phil Fulmer and Spurrier for turning them in – but the reality is – BAMA was cheating and got what it deserved.

I also find it ironic that Auburn fans (among others) are quick to jump on Alabama rumors (when they have their own to deal with). Auburn is listed as a top 5 violator.

I hope that UGA fans will not get into this crap – you never know if we have had a rogue booster influence our recruits – and you never know if and when the NCAA decides to focus on your school due to rumors etc. Look at AJ Green last year – they investigated him for rumors about paid trips to Miami – what was uncovered is he sold a jersey for spring break money – and sat out 4 games.

What comes around – goes around – so keep the recruting rumor crap to a minimum.

Ray Drew did play basketball at Thomas County Central. His team made it to the second round of the state playoffs where they were eliminated by Jonesboro. He moves very well for a big man.

@GStateBen: Just because he is throwing the discus doesn’t mean he will not be lifting weights or doing other football related activities. We are not talking about playing baseball during the spring. The throwers (discus, shot put and hammer) all must lift weights. In is a combination of technique and strength.

Now, run back to panthertalk.com and worry about your coach scheduling the spring game on a night when all your players are in class. Also, you all need to find another opponent since they finally shutdown that institute of higher learner better known as Lambuth. And while you all are at it, the Falcons (or better yet the NFL) booted you all out the Dome for your Thursday opener against Clark Atlanta. Hey, Grady Stadium is available. Black Out:

Agree with most of your predictions – agree that Mississippi State is a HUGE watchout for UGA.

You are probably more optimistic than me on UGA – I think UGA has the potential to get to Atlanta – but we were 6-7 for a reason.

I do think UGA’s defense will be much improved – but I am concerned about our O-Line as they have been nothing special 2 years running.

However – for UGA – NO BAMA, NO LSU, NO ARKANSAS – that is HUGE as compared to South Carolina’s / Florida’s SEC West schedule.

from my perspective – The ALABAMA/LSU game is THE game this year. The SEC East’s best team could be the SEC’s West 4th best team. Will have to see.
