Will UGA and Georgia Tech show up for ex-Tennessee recruit?

Where will Kevin Ware sign?

Kevin Ware, one of the top unsigned basketball prospects in the nation, will have a better idea on which schools have the most interest in him beginning on Friday.

Friday (April 15) is the start of an NCAA “contact period” when college coaches can observe the ex-Tennessee basketball recruit working out at Rockdale County High School and also make in-home visits with the 6-foot-4 guard. It lasts for five days.

Who will be there? Louisville, South Carolina and Central Florida are good bets. There’s also the possibility of representatives from UGA, Alabama, Georgetown and UCLA.

“Those are the schools that Kevin really likes, and they seem to like Kevin, too,” the prospect’s stepfather, Wesley Junior told the AJC on Wednesday night.

What about Georgia Tech? “Everybody keeps asking us about Georgia Tech, and we haven’t heard anything from the new coach [Brian Gregory] or through the grapevine,” Junior said. “I just don’t know. I’m not sure. Maybe they haven’t had the opportunity because of the ‘dead period.’ I guess if they show up on Friday, they are interested.”

What about Georgia? Ware’s family said they contacted Bulldogs coach Mark Fox and his staff. “They said they would love to have Kevin there,” Junior said. “They think they could have one of the best backcourts in the country with Kevin and [Kentavious Caldwell-Pope]. Georgia really has an interest in getting Kevin there and seeing how they can develop him as a point guard.”

What about Ware’s former school, Tennessee? New Volunteers coach Cuonzo Martin has told Ware that his Tennessee scholarship is still good, according to Junior. However, Martin has been prevented from meeting in person with Ware because the team’s previous staff under Bruce Pearl used up Tennessee’s three off-campus visits earlier in the school year.

“It’s unfortunate,” Junior said. “We may have to go up there on an unofficial visit. We’re waiting to see how it plays out. If meeting with Coach Martin in Tennessee is something that Kevin wants to do, then we’ll make the ride there so he can get a good feel for everything.”

Ware was actually scheduled to make an official visit to Central Florida this weekend, but postponed it because of the “contact period.” Ware wants to meet and greet coaches on his home turf before setting up any of his final four official visits.

Ware is ranked as the nation’s No. 56 player by Rivals. He averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds while leading Rockdale County to its first appearance in the state championship since 1987.

UGA and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope would be a perfect fit Kevin. We would love to see another Georgia player stay here and make this program all that it can be under CMF.

He will go to Louisville or Tech. If Brian Gregory shows no interest he will be in Louisville. These are the schools he has stated in the past that he loved the most. I think he is enjoying the recruiting thing again with all the attention he is getting.

Mr. Carvell—Thank you for a great up-date, regarding the re-recruiting of K-Ware. In my opinion, the school that signs him will be very pleased. Can’t get enough of your recruiting info, Keep it coming !

Time for this kid to either poop or get off the pot. If he picks Tech great, if not life goes on. Gregory will make a big splash in recruiting next year anyway so this kid is just gravy if nothing else.

Thinking the same as several posts above – kid is enjoying some attention in his re-recruitment – but losing Pearl at Tennessee was huge.
Thinking Louisville has the highest probability.

All signs point to UGA or Louisville. We would love to have you in Athens. I am also a Rockdale grad and you will love maintaining that Bulldog Pride in your college career at UGA.

I’m excited just thinking about a KW/KCP backcourt.

After reading the comments, some of you are the Biggest Losers ever!!! I know Kevin and his family personally. They are some of the nicest most genuine people you could meet. Not to mention that Kevin is a nice, repectful, smart, kind, polite, intelligent and HUMBLE young man who has been BLESSED with an athletic gift and talent. You who say he’s “enjoying” the attention he’s getting with this recruiting process are TOTALLY missing it. You forget, he didn’t go thru a recruiting process before because Tennessee reached out to him in his Sophomore year of high school. It’s not about “enjoying” the attention. It’s about Kevin making a decision about his future that is going to be the best fit for him as well as most beneficial to him regarding his academics and ball playing. So if it requires him to “get attention” while doing so, then SO BE IT!!! You all are not him or his parents and may not have any children of your own who were “in demand” by college coaches for their athleticism or academics, therefore you may not or do not know how important this is for them all. Stay away from the personal attacks and snide remarks and comment on the issue at hand…….Kevin and his family making the best decision for his collegiate future. I personally hope Kevin will stay in state so that his many hometown supporters will be able to continue supporting his family and him as he moves forward to the next stage of his life. Either way, in state or out, I will still support him. Congratulations Kevin on your accomplishments thus far and I pray there will be many more to come!!! (From a RCHS Alumni parent)

Jazzie – there is nothing wrong with enjoying the attention, its part of the world we live in and the media hype given potential athletes. While Id love to see him at UGA, he’ll go where he feels is the best fit for him, and good luck to him.

He should not to UGA just to play with Caldwell-Pope. Caldwell-Pope will be a one and done and gone to the NBA.

He needs to pick a school and attend the school. Coaches may be gone after next year. No dependability there.

If I were a betting man I’d have to put my money on Louisville. I mean really, if you were a kid wouldn’t choose to play for Pitino over the others? Hope I’m wrong, he stays in state and signs with either UGA or Tech but I wouldn’t bank on it.

@Jazzie. You can’t argue with idiots. I’m a UGA grad and would love to see Mr. Ware end up in the red and black. If he doesn’t, it certainly doesn’t have any impact on my personal life. Some of the people on these blogs seem to pin everything in their lives on what others do or don’t do. Sad but true.

“UGA has nothing to offer him athletically or academically. He won’t be going there. GT or Louisville would both be far better options”

Typical ignorant and lazy comment made by a mindless. UGA is a far superior school to Louisville academically. It’s not even close really. UGA is ranked the 56 best school in the nation, where as Louisville isn’t even ranked in Tier 1, which is about the top 150 schools.

Kevin Ware first chose Tennessee because they FILLED a 19,000 seat arena for nearly every game. He is not going to UGA where they can’t get close to 9,000 for ANY game.

I imagine he will decide to go to a school that needs a 2-guard. Georgia Tech has 9 guards returning, assuming Shumpert doesn’t leave, and Brian Oliver can switch back to guard full time with the addition of Julian Royal.

A piece in the local Thomasville paper today about signee Ray Drew. Drew apparently is very adept at the discus throw in track and field (ranked 2nd nationally according to the article).. It seems Drew intends throwing the discus at UGA in addition to football.

Not a real high profile revelation, but it does seem that Ray is very talented and gifted athletically, not to mention his spiritual development.

Passed along for whatever its worth.

Kevin, went to RCHS and played there. Still live in Conyers. Trust me, Tech is where its at. Get that degree and you can write your own ticket, post college basketball or not. Come to Atlanta!

Also thanks for your playing the last four years for Rockdale. Watching this years run was a lot of fun.

To clear the “blog” air…… (@ Bazooka and WhoCares): first of all, I don’t owe anybody an explanation nor do I have to lie to you unknowns about WHO I know. My mentioning that I know the family was merely to set the stage of what kind of people they are and how this recruiting decision is weighing on them. The comments don’t bother me………it’s the idiots behind them!!! With that being said, some of your “blog” names speak for themselves by way of your comments!

Hey Boss, as a recent resident (moved 1 month ago) of Louisville the only thing I can say about the school is, its a commuter school. It’s a nasty area of town. Yes, its close to Churchill Downs and the now defunct Six Flags ‘Kentucky Kingdom’ but its still not a nice campus by any means. Academically it is a very easy school to get in. It’s about the same academcially as Kennesaw State. They have crazy fan support because they are the only thing in town. There is nothing else to do (professional sports) except go to a Bats game in the spring/summer or U of L basketball game during basketball season. Your just a UGA hater and it shows.

I really hope that you guys are not alumni from any of these schools. Mainly because you miss all the points in choosing a school. Georgia Tech may show up, but i highly doubt that they will pursue Ware excessively. I think the strongest contenders are UGA and Louisville. UCLA has a shot if they really feel the need to recruit across country heavily. UGA is the academic choice of the two schools, and it is close to home. Not to mention with Caldwell-Pope in the back court, Ware has an opportunity to play with another elite Georgia recruit. Louisville has a stellar coaching staff, and their program is a storied one at that. Kevin Ware will make a well thought our decision, and of course you all will get back on here and bash him for whatever it is. This a kid with a talent, who never really got to be in the spot light nationally. Let him enjoy himself, and he will make the best choice for him.

That said, I am a UGA fan who is from Newton County, and I’d love to see a guy from close to home playing in red and black.

Ware isn’t going to GT. Gregory has not even talked to him and that pretty much tells you we have no interest in going after him. GT is after josh richardson hard but Tenn may get him. I don’t know if anyone very good will sign with GT in this signing period given the coaching change. Next year is important for gregory to recruit well. We need to get back at signing stud point guards. Given our history with great guards, it should be an easy sell! I have heard ware may end up back in knoxville. They are fixing to get ripped by the ncaa so i don’t know why any player would go to UT. They may even get banned from postseason play for a bit.
