Time for the NCAA’s late signing period for basketball (UPDATED)

UGA’s basketball team is expected to sign at least one player in the NCAA’s late signing period, which begins on Wednesday. Nemanja Djurisic, a 6-8 forward from South Kent, Conn., committed to the Bulldogs earlier this spring. UGA coach Mark Fox could add another player or two by the end of the signing period, which is May 18.

Meanwhile, the Georgia State women are expected to sign forward Miranda Smith from Virginia’s Patrick Henry High School.

Here’s a partial list of other boys and girls from the Atlanta area signing on Wednesday:

Alex Davis, Pace Academy boys, Oglethorpe. The 6-1 combo guard averaged 15 points.

Shanteona Keys, Roswell HS girls, Georgia College & State University. The 5-9 guard averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds for the Region 6-AAAAA champions. Keys finished as the school’s third all-time scorer with 1,234 points.

Arielle Thomas, North Clayton HS girls, Young Harris.

Jonathan Tinch, Stephenson HS boys, University of Mobile. The 6-2 guard averaged 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Now that Leslie is staying in the draft, is UGA going after Ware? Someone else?

I’m a GT fan and i think uga will get ware. GT is after only josh richardson from OK and it is a GT,TN battle for him and my sources say gregory will not even try to land ware. He is a good player and i think he ends up at UGA. We have 1 ship to give unless shumpert does leave but if we don’t land richardson i think we save it for 2012.

Need to add another aggressive shooter and defender. Wish Leslie luck but, I hope he develops his outside shooting.

I read where the new Vols coach has already secured a top PG
from Memphis and a combo guard from Iowa.

Only of matter of time until Ware rejoins Vol Nation.

It’s April so we are probably gonna win the NC in football this year and we got the DREAM TEAM, which was ranked as the 5th best class by Rivals and 8 by Scouts and 10 best by ESPN. We are behind only Alabama in the SEC, and Florida, and Auburn, and LSU.

Come to UGA, Mr. Ware. We are up and coming and you will have great opportunities here. How was fan attendance at UGA during Fox’s second year? Great! He took Felton’s players and molded them into a team after they couldn’t even remember to bring their shoes to a game. Offense like Phil Jackson’s and he will be at UGA a long time with no NCAA probation looming!!

I really appreciate that Thompkins & Leslie made their final decisions before the beginning of the late signing period. It shows class and respect for UGA and Coach Fox. Thanks guys and good luck. Now Coach Fox and recruits know that Georgia has one and possibly three scholarships available. It would be great to have a point guard like Kevin Ware and another power forward to go with what we have coming back. Go Dawgs.

Watching UT get picked apart by the NCAA in the both football and baskettball is great. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving group. You played with fire and you got burned. I hope it’s so bad you’re a freakin’ ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.

@ Old Gold and White, unfortunately I think you’re going to be disappointed by NCAA sanctions against TN. They will face some pealties due to BP’s deeds, and maybe a slap on the wrist for LK’s antics in fb, but word is majority of sanctions will be levied upon offending coaches, not the programs. I know it’s fun to revel in the misery of others so enjoy while it lasts, because both mjor sports will be back near the top, sooner rather than later. Check out the youth on the roster of the fb team, and do some research on new bball coach.

L’ville is the team to beat for Ware.
UGA has at least 2 more offers out to big men – it makes you wonder if they think one of the signees isn’t going to make it.
GT has an offer out to Josh Richardson (TN and OK are the others). If he goes elsewhere GT is looking at a local kid, as is TN.
Have to see if GT gets involved with either of the Dayton kids. As of last night GT hadn’t contacted them yet.

I won’t argue that the new coach has potential. The problem is how long they will give him. Recruits are running from UT faster than Knukeeseville residents run from a dentist.
He is a sacraficial lamb, because all the candidates they wanted basically sent out messages that they weren’t interested.
The sanctions will be bad, because UT failed to fire Pearl earlier. I also wonder about how the NCAA will view the football program when considering institutional control. It was more than just the actions of Kiffin. They knew what the Big Orange mattress-based recruiting program was about.
The UT athletic department is a joke and will pay for it.

@ old–”Recruits are running from UT” Who? Who ran? Only 1, Ware, asked for a release (which was granted), yet he is meeting with the new UT coach this weekend, so don’t be surprised if he sticks with that school. He may decide to go elsewhere, but you don’t know what he is going to do…let it play out. No football recruits are running either, so your quote is as inaccurate as can be. Better concentrate on your own joke of an athletic dept before whining about other schools that leave you in their dust, UGA included.

@ Old Gold-read the letter from the ncaa, almost all of the fb accusations were levelled against Kiff, I know it disappoints you, but fact of the matter is the fb program will be fine, bball may get it a little worse. Aother fact, you said bball recruits are running from UT, they only had 2 early signees, one of whom has chosen to stay w/ UT, the other is looking around, doesn’t really equate to recruits running from UT. I’ll stick to facts, you can stick to name calling and hyperbole. I will agree thanks to Hammy, Kiffin, Pearl, and Todd Raleigh the Ath dept is in a bit of disarray right, but will recover quickly because the money support is still there.

40capt: I have nothing against UT, but you really understate the state of “disarray” in the AA there. A colleague is an alum and legal consultant for the AA and they are in full-blown Hitler-in-the-bunker-with-the-Russians-outside-the-city-gates mode right now. Hamilton has been toast for awhile, and should have never been allowed to make the hoops HC fire/hire decisions. The “money” is a bigger concern than you assume, though my colleague agrees there is a strong fundbase to draw on.

The hoops season next year will be key for both Tech and UGA. Gregory has to get the team and fans onboard with his style while hopping between Gwinnett and Philips and road games. Fox will have to establish a new lineup yet again to prove his early success is the rule. I hope that both succeed, and would love to see the hoops rivalry become more prominent.

Kevin Ware comitted to UT in his soph year and signed early so he missed all the attention and hoopla around recruiting visits. So, he’s sniffing around now. Having some fun. Getting a lot of attention. He won’t sign with UGA unless he too gets a puppy.

Kevin Ware is listed by many as a shooting guard. I know think he will play PG at the next level, but he is a scorer not a facilitator. If you look at both UGA and Louisville they have a 5-star SG coming in for each school. No doubt, I would love to have Ware, but I don’t think he is coming to Athens. JMHO….If I had to guess, look out for UCLA

How did Georgia Tech let josh Swan get away, for for Southern Illinois? What can Southern Illinois have to offer – except maybe immediate opportunity to start instead of learning the college game and starting in year two.

Ramblin’, I don’t think GT would want, nor be a good fit, for either Dayton desertee, er, I mean” transferee”. They first need to learn to spell the word “team” and then learn the meaning of it, whether they actually apply it or not is up to them.

josh swan is not High major caliber. Esp ACC but GT isnt getting top players either.

Ware will most likely go to Lousiville.
