South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney, Steve Spurrier both ‘arrested’ over weekend

You have to hand it to Steve Spurrier for his ability make a point.

Clowney

Clowney

Jadeveon Clowney — the nation’s top recruit and South Carolina’s top signee — was handcuffed and detained briefly by police Friday in the Five Points area of downtown Columbia. Apparently the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Clowney fit the description of a robbery suspect who allegedly held up a convenience story earlier that night (how much you want to bet the accuser was a Clemson fan?).

Anyway, anticipating media questions about the incident the next day, Spurrier had Columbia’s chief of police come out to the field and “arrest” him during his post-practice media briefing. The “incident” was caught on video.

Spurrier’s point was a good one. Anyone can be handcuffed, detained and questioned. It doesn’t mean they’re a bad person. He did, however, chastise the 18-year-old, high school senior for being out in the city’s nightclub district at 2 in the morning.

But, of course, you can’t be arrested for that.

This is a bush-league piece by a bush-league columnist. The kid did nothing wrong and Spurrier made it a teachable moment. I wish we could get one media outlet in South Carolina to be the mouthpiece for our program the way this rag is for UGA.

I have been twice-1988, Dooley’s last year. They beat us and it was 120 degrees in the shade. Never forget the judge and jury under the stadium for catching a guy with outside booze container. Fined him on the spot apparently.

2006-When we shutout spurrier at his own stadium. Town just always seemed hot and steamy and not much interesting to do.

SSG Desert,

How many cars were on the street at 2:00am when the police stopped that car, based on the information they were given, about a robbery? It is hard to tell just how tall a person is, sitting in a car. They had a description of a young black man with dreadlocks, and he must have fit that description with the limited information that they had.
My father was a career police officer and although I am positive there are some bad eggs, just like in any profession, I bet if you were ever involved in any type of crime as a victim, you were glad when the police arrived. To assume all police officers there, are all racist and do sorry police work sounds like one who is ill informed and does not appreciate the job these folks do.
Spurrier, probably did the right thing in my opinion. Based on how, reporters of the various news(?) sources write headlines to incite rather than inform their readership, I think it was a great way to get the point across.

Never answer questions by the police without an attorney present. Give them your name, address, and then ask to have a lawyer if they want anything else.

The amazing fact that is that, this is a “news” story that allows comment while the REAL “news” story (Troy Davis and the time out chair) does not.

At least this overshadowed any of CMR’s boys that may have been out riding mopeds/scooters after curfew. I smell an NCAA BIGTIME investigation resulting in CCS and Clowney not being allowed to go to the bathroom for their first 5 games this season.

that's great but who are the chefs?

@JoeV and Chris – Seriously? Y’all are getting bent out of shape for that? Lighten up brothers before you have a coronary! I’ve been know to take myself way to seriously, but that sort of overreaction is reserved for those looking for a fight. It’s a blog, and last time I checked, none of the AJC’s staff has ever been nomintated for a Pullitzer…

@shankit – we probably don’t qualify by virtue of not being a top 25 program period…sad but true… at least not until this Fall!

Spurrier should be arrested for the crime of expiating his college career’s frustrations through coaching rivals of the team that used to beat his like a drum.

A LOT OF THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE CLUELESS, it’s called personal responsibility and many of these kids have none. Some have never been told no or really punished for anything.

The kid was just hanging out in the “nightclub district” at 2am. You’re talking as if he was walking in a meth induced daze with nothing on but socks. You guys never sneaked out past curfew or did something just alittle mischievous?

“There are always cases of mistaken identity. But, to make a mockery out of the police for his athlete is wrong. I would think that the police will be breathing harder on him and his boys now.”

The police chief is the one that came to practice to “arrest” Spurrier. Doesn’t sound like the police are mad about it at all.

I don’t know about that- but the police incident report stated that the caller that supposedly was robbed – didn’t stay around to talk to police. He was gone when they arrived. If I had just called the police to report being robbed, I think I’d stick around to talk to them when they were 2 mins away.

Stinger,

I think maybe your clock has stopped. I believe that UGA is being a lot more strict on thier players than previously has been the case. Go police your own campus, if you dare go out into the night where it is located. Just ask Ealey and that kid from Maryland, if they have noticed the change.

I’m a Georgia fan. When Spurrier is on the opposite sideline, he is one of my least favorite people. That said, give the guy credit and praise his willingness to make a point. Spurrier was not going to let the media run away with the idea that Clowney was a troublemaker. He made a point. He made it crystal clear. He had his player’s back. The story probably isn’t the biggest in sports; but if my son wanted to play for Spurrier, at least I know Spurrier will protect him if he is innocent.

A 911 call was completed by an anonymous caller who gave the description of a suspect who just robbed a convenience store, fit Clowner perfectly, and ran into a specific bar The bar in the report is where police found Clowney. The 911 caller refused any further assistance to the police or provide a name. The call came from a prepaid phone, and according to police there were no reported robberies of a convenience store within 2 square miles of Clowney’s detainment. Obviously this teenager was targeted by a malicious person who has an agenda against him or the football team. As disgusting as this moment became, it should be an important lesson for Clowney to learn that there always will be people with harmful intentions always watching for him to make a mistake.
