Ten@10: Could Tech or UGA make room for UT signee Kevin Ware?

THE FIVE AT 10 (sorry, some unexpected challenges this morning):

1. The fallout has begun at Tennessee in the wake of Bruce Pearl’s dismissal as men’s basketball coach and Georgia or Georgia Tech could benefit from it. Kevin Ware has officially requested a release from his UT letter-of-intent. A 6-foot-4 guard from Rockdale County High, Ware is a four-star prospect who has been committed to the Vols since he was a sophomore and signed with them last November. He told the AJC’s Michael Carvell that he’d consider either of the state schools but might lean toward UGA since the Yellow Jackets are also going through a coaching change.

“I wouldn’t lean to Georgia Tech as much because Coach [Paul] Hewitt just got fired and I don’t know the situation there without a new coach,” Ware told Carvell. “I would take a good look at Georgia because of some of the guys coming in, especially Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (a five-star signee from Greenville High). We played against each other twice when I was in high school and I think we would play well together in the same backcourt in college. However, I don’t know the scholarship situation at each school or what they’re looking for.”

Georgia’s scholarship situation is tight. The Bulldogs on Sunday accepted a commitment from what will be their fourth signee of the 2011 class, Nemanja Djurisic, a 6-8, 230-pound forward from South Kent, Conn. They will lose only seniors Chris Barnes and Jeremy Price to graduation, so unless juniors Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins both decide to enter the NBA draft, they don’t currently have any room.

Tech’s situation is a little more fluid. The Yellow Jackets currently have two players signed for 2011 (Bobby Parks and Julian Royal) and will lose two players to graduation (Mo Miller and Lance Storrs). So that gives them 11 scholarship commitments for 2011-12 (the NCAA max is 13). Meanwhile, there’s some question as to whether Parks intends to honor his signed LOI (Royal has said he’s sticking). Suffice it to say, whoever assumes Tech’s head coaching position should have room to bring in more players between now and the April signing period.

2. One up-and-coming local player on the football recruiting scene is Covington’s Sheldon Rankins. The 6-3, 255-pound defensive end from Eastside High School has been piling up offers of late. Most recently he landed one from Nebraska this past weekend. That gives the rising senior nine so far. His others are from Boston College, Florida Atlantic, Louisville, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Florida and Stanford.

“He’s an explosive kid off the end,” Eastside coach Rick Hurst said. “He has great size and tremendous speed, around 4.7 in the 40, an all-around great athlete. And he’s a good kid. Has a 3.5 GPA; his mom’s in education. Just a real pleasure to be around.”

You’ll also notice neither Tech nor UGA have offered. Hurst certainly has.

“Georgia was [recruiting him] for a while, but now they’ve offered several D-ends,” Hurst  said. “I’m a Georgia fan and I’m really kind of ticked off with them, to be honest. Bryan McClendon [an assistant who is recruiting him for UGA] likes him, but it’s not up to him.”

3. Former Georgia quarterback Logan Gray is considering transferring to Colorado, according to the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo. Gray, who signed with the Bulldogs as the nation’s 10th-ranked quarterback in 2007, has decided to take advantage of the NCAA’s postgraduate transfer rule and complete his final year of eligibility elsewhere.

4. Rising juniors and seniors looking to make a splash on the recruiting landscape or improve upon their status will get a chance to do so at a camp where participants will be evaluated by CBS national recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. The Junior Rank Diamond Flight Camp will take place April 8-10 at Walton High School in Marietta. The camp is for rising fifth graders through high school seniors. The price is $99 for all three days, but the first 100 rising juniors and seniors will be able to attend the camp for free by registering with Junior Rank national camp director Oscar Dillard at 404-626-1264, or email at coachdillard@oscardillardallsportsacademy.com (fifth through 10th graders should register at the Junior Rank website, www.juniorrank.com).

Camp participants will receive instruction from coaches with college and NFL experience, including running backs coach Blair Thomas (Penn State, No. 2 overall pick by the New York Jets), linebackers coach Buddy Curry (North Carolina, Atlanta Falcons for eight seasons) and defensive backs coach Mark McMillian (Alabama, eight years in the NFL).

5. Offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker, who included Georgia and Auburn on his recent spring-break tour of campuses, committed to the Florida Gators over the weekend. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound tackle from Boynton Beach, Fla., becomes the Gators’ sixth commitment for 2012. Likely not helping the Bulldogs’ cause with Dunker was the fact that the students — and players — were on spring break while he made his visit late last week.

RRTdawgs I agree he could but that means either convincing players to leave or them going on there own. I have no idea about current UGA players and thier NBA potentiol. I think Royal will stay if GT can hurry and find the right coach and possibley could steal Ware if the right guy comes in. Will be interesting to see what happens.

And I don’t think Royal or his family ever said he would leave if Hewitt got fired. As a matter of fact, most reports now are that he is remaining committed. I think the day after, it was reported that DRad called him and asked for a little patience until Tech hired a new coach and they said they would grant him that. Where are you getting your info, RRTD?

RRTD is basing it on rumors only. The rumor that Royal could transfer is like a zombie lie. No matter how many times it gets rebunked, and proven to be very unlikely, people keep talking about it.

Someone should remind Rick Hurst that it is March. I’m kinda ticked off he is passing that attitude on to his players (kids). Keep your head up and keep working hard. Good things always happen when you do that. Jeez.

Ya know, I’ll often say to UGA players transering elsewhere or recruits that go to another school “best of luck” or something similar, but I really don’t mean it. That said, when I say “best of luck” to Logan Grey I completely mean every word of it. I hope he goes out there and plays lights out as a QB. Best of luck to ya Logan!

Now, regarding the O-line kid… he choose to visit campus during spring break so umm what did he expect? I’m sure Florida was probably already leading for his services. But I wish him best of luck… (yeh right ;) )

Travis and Trey need to stay in school. Neither one of them have a bright future in the NBA. Trey might get drafted in the first round but Travis won’t. Don’t get mad UGA fans, Im just telling the truth.
Chip have you heard anymore rumors about the Tech job??

Again the pattern seems to be that the dawgs are slow to offer for several reasons…They have there eye on several recruits that will come down to the end. I will say that I would have thought the great recruiting class we just landed would have given us more momentum to get some early committments…Not sure why we can’t seem to close the deal on some, but I guess we are after the very elite and so is everyone else….Maybe its too early, but does anyone else feel that we seem to be dragging a little behind some other schools…Of course this past recruiting class turned out great, at least on paper, so maybe no need to worry just yet…go dawgs

@ RxDawg, good post on Logan Gray. I completely agree with you. Logan is a good kid and I wish him luck as well. He was never a “bad egg”, he’s just behind a better football player. Logan did everything that was asked of him, and if all of our athletes did that the program would be in better shape. Thanks for your contributions to the team Logan.

After that 13-17 year as a Tech assistant, Mark Price could have coached anywhere. It was humble of him to become an assistant high school coach the next year.

Logan Gray won’t beat out the kid colorado has returning at QB.

He needs to go play D-2 or D-1AA if he wants to play QB.

Travis hasn’t developed his outside shot yet to be successful in the NBA. Trey still needs to learn how to break and/or pass out of the double team.

I do not believe wither one of them are ready, but then again I did not think Louis Williams was ready, either.

No guarantee Kevin Ware’s request for release will be granted by Tennessee. Just ask Bryce Brown how Tennessee handles these types of requests.

I would love to have him at Tech, but I don’t see it happening.

I agree with the comments about Trey and Travis about being ready for the NBA…Now whether they will be successful in the NBA is hard to say…Many that I thought would do well didn’t and others did much better than expected….With that being said, I don’t believe either one is ready right now, one more season will enhance their skills….but If I had to guess, I would lean towards Trey leaving and Travis staying, but just an opinion….Its hard for these kids to turn down the money if its there, even though if they wait, it could boost their stock….Should would like to see those two come back for another season and help our dawgs improve over last year…..go dawgs

K. Conley and dawgster do you think the reason commits have been slow is because of Richt’s future or is it that we are just slow on offers Florida and Bama are beating us right now with Gators with 6 and Tide with 12 .

@RRTDawgs…Hard to say, some of both i suspect, but his status this past season didn’t hurt our recruiting efforts, so I would lean to the fact that we are just slow and more deliberate in who and when we offer. Its still early yet, but as I said, I would have thought with the momentum we had, we would have continued to get some committments early….I suspect we will be just fine, but i do get tired of reading the AJC articles on how the dawgs lost another to Bama or the Gators…go dawgs

Hey dawgster i agree i think ones we recruiting hard we will most likely get still feel good about Kieth Marshall , Lenard Floyd , John Theus , Geno Smith 50/50 Deion Bonner more likely .

Au is after Marshall very hard, this will be a battle for him to the very end…I don’t think anyone leads for him..but its going to be difficult to bring in back to back RB’s in the caliber of Crowell and Marshall…just my opinion, but I think there are other RB’s that are very good that we could get that will fit in very well…don’t get me wrong, Marshall would be huge, but if Crowell is the RB that many think he is or will become, a RB like Marshall may see a better opportunity somewhere else..I think Floyd and Theus will be dawgs…Smith and Bonner you are probably right on…

““I’m a Georgia fan and I’m really kind of ticked off with them, to be honest.”

Who cares whether you’re ticked off with them? When did you become an expert on what Georgia does or doesn’t need? It’s not about you, coach. Why don’t’ you just do your job, do it well, and let UGA decide who they need?

cbsjax: Here’s my breakdown, verified by UGA’s sports communications office

Scholarship players for 2011-12
1. Jr. Sherrard Brantley
*2. Sr. Matt Bucklin
3. Sr. Travis Leslie
*4. Sr. Connor Nolte
5. Sr. Gerald Robinson
6. Sr. Trey Thompkins
7. So. Marcus Thornton
8. Sr. Dustin Ware
9. So. Donte Williams
10. Jr. Vincent Williams
Plus signees:
11. Fr. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
12. Fr. Nemanja Djurisic
13. Fr. Tim Dixon

That’s it, Coach Hurst. Make it all about you. Telling Chip Towers about your anger at UGA so he can do another article trying to paint the UGA coaches in a bad light is no way to help your player land a scholarship at the school you are a fan of. I’m guessing they have phones at Eastside High School that he could use to call the Athletic Office @ UGA and find answers to his questions.

Hey man, I wanted to ask where you are getting your info from on Marshall. From what I’ve been hearing, there is a pretty clear leader in this battle and from the actions that Richt has taken in not going hard after other backs, its obvious who is leading. 247 sports has reported that AU is after Marshall but they are loaded with RBs with Dwyer, Bray and now Kenno Loyal if the Loyal commit holds up i say it would remain a UGA vs UNC battle and the dawgs have been the most active recruiting him.

Chip,
On the scholly numbers, I was basing on Bucklin & Nolte not being renewed. Typically, schollies for walk ons are on a as available basis. Also have heard there is a high possibility of one schollied player transferring.

VinceVanGo

March 22nd, 2011
1:49 pm

With Chip’s roster breakdown even if Thompkins & Leslie both come back(which I don’t think both will) Fox can not renew Bucklin & Nolte and still have one slot to give. If he got Kevin Ware and T. & L. both returned Georgia would be a preseason Top 10. And they could stay there to if Fox will use the freshmen and sophomores to develop his bench.
