QB Mike Tamburo to transfer to UGA from Boise State

“I’m actually going to go to Georgia and do the whole walk-on thing there.”

Tamburo

Tamburo

That was the word from Suwanee resident Mike Tamburo on Friday, who told the AJC earlier this week he intended to transfer from Boise State to some place “closer to home.”

Turns out that place is Athens, Ga.,, home of the Georgia Bulldogs and the team against which Tamburo’s current team opens the season in the Georgia Dome in September.

“I’ve been talking to Georgia and to Coach [Mike] Bobo and I just liked everything about the idea of going there,” said Tamburo, a record-setting quarterback out of North Gwinnett High. “There’s the football program, the tradition and all that. I know about the all the guys on the depth chart and all that. But that’s not what this is about. I’m just lokking for a fresh start.”

Tamburo is alluding to the fact that Georgia is young at the quarterback position. Aaron Murray returns as a sophomore starter for the Bulldogs and sophomore Hutson Mason and true freshman Christian LeMay are already in the fold.

Tamburo, who will be a redshirt sophomore this fall, was unable to get on the field for the Broncos and had fallen behind on the depth chart. But while he intends to compete once he gets to Athens, this was probably more of an educational decision.

“As I’ve seen here, academics are the most important thing,” Tamburo said. “I’m a business major and [UGA has] a Top 10 business school. So I was looking at that as much as anything.”

Tamburo said he seriously considered transferring to Georgia State, an FCS school that could sorely use his help. The Panthers recently lost starting quarterback Drew Little to a four-game suspension and backup Star Jackson, who left the team.

“Yeah, I talked to them,” said Tamburo, who accounted for 8,476 total yards and 90 touchdowns while playing for Bob Sphire at North Gwinnett High. “I’ve got a couple of buddies that play there and my little sister (Kristin Tamburo) is going there to play soccer. But there were a lot of things that went into my decision.”

Tamburo has to complete the spring semester at Boise State, which ends May 12, then will enroll at Georgia as quickly as possible. He’ll have to sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules. But he may still be able to help the Bulldogs a little when they meet Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome this fall.

“Well, I know [Boise] personnel wise,” he said. “I know the general lineup and stuff. But that’s not really anything you can’t see on film. I don’t know, maybe I can help them with a few things.”

Meanwhile, Tamburo’s biggest problem may come after he finishes his exams in Boise. He has to drive his pickup truck all the way back to Georgia. He only recently got his truck out there.

“It’s all the way across the country, basically,” he sighed. “It may be June before I get there.”

I hear LeMay has LOTS of EXPERIENCE at scoring and running game. The problem is it seems to be on underage girls in a classroom.

Nothing wrong with the whole deal, since it cost nothing for his time on the field and like I said before, he may actually provide some leadership and maturity, if needed. He will not be able to dress up until 2012, and he will then be a Junior classman. Can’t find any negatives in the whole deal.
Just for the record though, does anybody know how many people can be in uniform on game day. I don’t think they have all 85 scholarships and the walkons all in uniform, do they?
Noles, I believe he had some injury problems at Boise and they were already three deep at QB, so it is a win/win situation for all involved.
Give the young man a chance. He might just fool us all with his football abilities.

Walk-ons play a very important roll on a football team. Practice dummies ain’t cheap. You need four or three QBs on the scout team who can emulate the different styles you see during the season.

QUESTIONAABLE GRADES? Are you sure about that? The article did not mention anything about academic problems and I don’t think any university is allowed to release a students grades to the general public. Got an inside source?

Who told this idiot that UGA had a top ten business school?? UGA has fallen behind GT in the Business School Rankings, and is NOT in the top 10 or anywhere close.

Georgia a top-10 business school? Maybe top 60. Look it up. There is obviously more to this story.

John Louis,

Maybe it just has to do with the fact that he wanted to be a UGA team member. If it were based just on his need to get to a education program for his business degree, maybe he would have chosen Tech. But he still has a desire to be part of a football team. GT has very little to offer in that area for a QB, unless he is an option type QB, which this young man obviously wasn’t based on his high school stats. He met the academic requirement and asked to come to UGA, and was accepted.
Possibly, he just felt more comfortable at UGA then he would have been at TECH. or Georgia State.
There could be a multitude of reasons, just like above, but since there does not seem to be any type of conspiracy of some sorts, just accept that the young man made the decision, based on what he wanted and felt he needed. If you can’t accept that, then what would be your theory and investigate, if you need more.

Actually….UGA is one of the top 20 business schools in the country (btw…Tech isnt in the top 50)

The Terry College of Business and its MBA programs are consistently recognized as being among the top programs in the nation. In fact, the Terry MBA was recently ranked one of the top 20 public programs in the nation by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, The Economist, and The Financial Times. These rankings are a testament to the quality of our curriculum, faculty, students and the success of our alumni. The Terry MBA provides the right combination of business theory, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership development that allows our graduates to excel.

@ The Shame. I agree. Georgia State is a good school and he would probably actually play. Most hiring managers say they don’t much attention where the degree is, unless its for example from Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc.

bulldogmaniac..You are delusional. I just checked your first source. UGA is not listed in the top ten of either Undergrad Business or MBA programs…BTW They are also ranked below Georgia Tech in both. Do you just make up things and state them as facts in an argument. Here is businessweek…flip through the tabs under the picture for rankings of Undergrad, MBA, etc. http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/rankings/

Business School clarification… UGA is not a top 10 business school overall.. However they have certain programs within the business school that are (Real Estate and Risk Management). Everyone needs to relax and do their homework.

So the Georgia coach is having conversation with a player on scholarship at another school before that player announces he is leaving the other school. What’s teh matter Georgia felt leftout by not having the NCAA on campus investigatign them?

“…Tamburo, who accounted for 8,476 total yards and 90 touchdowns…at North Gwinnett…”

Doesn’t sound like a “reject” to me. At the least he should make a pretty good scout teamer. And, who knows a couple years down the road? For one thing, what if Murray goes pro after his Jr year? Injuries, transfers, etc…who knows?

He stated he’s looking at his education; sounds smart enough to me. I do wonder why not GSU, however.

For those of you bad-mouthing the Terry College: it’s best not to comment if you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Welcome, Mr Tamburo. Good luck!

He’ll have no problem walking on, but no way he’ll beat out Murray or LeMay to start in 2012. He’ll make a great scout team QB though. Sure, you can help us practice.

jborobdawg….don’t believe Murray will be going pro after his jr year. You don’t see alot of 6′0″ qb’s leave school early. Not much call for that size player at his position. Mike Vick being the exception.

Great for the dawgs. Win/win for player and team. They get a QB from that got a full ride deal from Boise and he will be a walkon for the dogs. Great deal. He gets to live in a great college town close to home with great music and hot girls and get a fine education. Ga has a fine public ed business program. In the rankings, who cares if your in the top tier. Great for the kid and the dawgs. Love getting kids that get a full ride from other schools to walk on a UGA

by the way Murray will not be 6.1 when he measures at the combine. He will be under that. Regardless, the kid turned out to be a good qb for the dawgs. A real positive for a bad season.

The road to playing time might not be as long as some of you think. Hutson Mason is a scrub and will never see the field and Lemay is a freshman with no experience and I would think he would redshirt barring catastrophic scenarios.

If GSU business school is a good one AND you will almost be guaranteed playing time there must be something he knows about his role at UGA.
